Pls tell me parents are *not* playing this trick on their children

I’ve just seen reports on Twitter that some parents are telling their kids school has started again, seeing them get excited....and then telling them ‘april Fool!’ .....and videoing their distress and posting on Facebook for LOLS.

This is really upsetting me. I can’t believe people would be so cruel.

I am not sure I believe these stories. Has anyone seen these posts?

Mine would cry thinking they were going to see their friends again.

It's a type of bullying and humiliation. It's awful. It'd be like BJ telling us a vaccine was ready, lockdown over soon... and then saying that was an April fools.

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 01/04/2020 12:44

I hate 'pranks' or 'tricks' at the best of times - they always involve someone being made to look stupid or get upset. Horrible.

Give me some dark humour and I'm fine, but I dont like people being made victims where everyone else laughs at their reaction. It's cruel.

GenderfreeNatalie · 01/04/2020 12:47

Not all kids are excited about returning to school. Plenty are actually enjoying the time off and don't want to go back 🙄

Wheresthebeach · 01/04/2020 12:48

A special combination of cruel and attention seeking. Quite disgusting.

Hotpinkangel19 · 01/04/2020 12:49

Don't be silly, it's just a joke! Some people have no sense of humour. And are extremely dramatic 🙄

alloutoffucks · 01/04/2020 12:49

Yes there are stupid cruel parents who do these things for "laughs".

ScatteredMama82 · 01/04/2020 12:51

That's really cruel. Mine are missing their friends, it would be really upsetting to trick them this way.

Iwalkinmyclothing · 01/04/2020 12:51

It's only a joke if both sides are laughing

Otherwise it's just bullying, but then I suppose bullies have been hiding behind "but it was only a joke" forever

Helmetbymidnight · 01/04/2020 12:54

i havent seen this fortunately, i dont know anyone that thick ...id block 'em.

TooMuchBloodyChoice · 01/04/2020 13:00

I sent this to my teen - who wouldn’t be thrilled at the prospect of returning. He is a big prankster but knew instantly it was an April fools.

I specifically didn’t send it to my younger child as they would be thrilled at the thought of returning and it would break their heart to be told it was a joke.

It entirely depends on the audience (as with most jokes). Doesn’t mean I am thick, but thanks for that.

Helmetbymidnight · 01/04/2020 13:01

did you video his distress and put it on fb?

Oranly · 01/04/2020 13:01

Oh well. I did it. No major breakdowns here over it. 😉

Natsku · 01/04/2020 13:02

I did say to DD that school has opened again, but I said it right after she had read that it is April Fools day in the message from her teacher this morning so she immediately said 'nice try' and laughed at me. I wouldn't have said it if I thought she would have fallen for it because I know she wants to go back (because I'm a really annoying teaching apparently)

POP7777777 · 01/04/2020 13:03

It wouldn't surprise me at all. Every day I see people winding up their kids to gain 'likes'. I hate it.

airbags · 01/04/2020 13:03

I was thinking the same. Cruel.

alloutoffucks · 01/04/2020 13:03

You can dismiss it as a joke all you want. But it is deliberately upsetting children so you can have a laugh. That is cruel shit parenting.

yoloPenguinsEatfish · 01/04/2020 13:06

There's taking the piss, and there's being deliberately cruel. Most of us know which side of the line it falls, and if it upsets someone or makes them look stupid, then it's cruel.

Mysocalledlifexx · 01/04/2020 13:07

They shouldnt be parents, who does this? Is hard enough for them as it is.

OhMsBeliever · 01/04/2020 13:07

I said it to my 15 year old twins. But only because I know them, and they know my sense of humour and they knew straight away I was bullshitting.

If I thought it would have either upset them or made them really happy (and then meant them being upset) then I wouldn't have said anything.

Like someone else said, it's only a joke if both sides laugh. I knew mine would laugh.

MarieQueenofScots · 01/04/2020 13:07

Some people have no sense of humour

Call me old fashioned but doesn't the meaning of humour revolve around something being amusing?

This really, really isn't. I can't fathom people who dismiss deliberate unkindness as "a joke".

SquashedFlyBiscuit · 01/04/2020 13:07

Its really truly cruel.

I guess people who do this struggle with empathy or putting yourself in the childs place. Their world has been turned upside down.

As it is mine would love school back. Not that they wouldnt love a long holiday but they'd just like to be free to go put and life back to normal.

I am shocked that people are doing this :(

Windyatthebeach · 01/04/2020 13:08

I told my dc the Internet was down for the rest of the week..
Back to school joke would have seen my sobbing it was just a joke...

Oranly · 01/04/2020 13:09

You assume that all children would be upset by it. Not all children are the same. If you think your children would be anguished at the thought of staying home for a moment longer than they have to, then the joke isn't for them. I'd feel sad that they hated it at home so much personally.

ITasteSpring · 01/04/2020 13:13

It's only a joke if both sides are laughing

Otherwise it's just bullying, but then I suppose bullies have been hiding behind "but it was only a joke" forever

This! This! This!
I tell my kids this endlessly.
It's exactly why I hate practical jokes. Usually the only person laughing is the self-identified 'fun loving prankster'.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 01/04/2020 13:14

It is horrible and only somebody who doesn't know their child(ren) or love them, would do it.

I've seen similar.. video posted of a child being goaded to cry by their excuse for a 'mother' telling them about all the takeaways that they can't go to anymore.

Horrible. I don't care if some think it's fun either, that's their deficiency - and it is. Imagine wanting to capture your child's anguish?
