Are people getting worried now that even young healthy people are dying from this?

OP posts:
Kingcole · 31/03/2020 22:15

Yeah, the smart people also cried wolf over Swine Flu, Bird Flu, Ebola etc etc.

Nope I wasn't the slightest bit worried about those mentioned but I was definitely worried about Covid-19 some months ago.

TheWordmeister · 31/03/2020 22:15

No - not worried.

These posts just fuel those that are anxious or prone to panic.

RishiSunakFanClub · 31/03/2020 22:17

Presumably you didn't care when you thought it was just old people dying from the virus?

stoptherideiwanttogetoff · 31/03/2020 22:17

I was one of the smart people and have been following this virus since January. I warned friends it was getting worse and to start planning.. they thought I was nuts.

Carbosug · 31/03/2020 22:18

Seriously, can people stop creating threads like this. If you suffer from anxiety that is hard for you, but starting upsetting threads exaggerating the fears around this is not fair on others who may also be suffering from anxiety.

Scruffyoak · 31/03/2020 22:18

I have also followed since january. I have been worried from the start. My anxiety is actually through the roof now now!

Fatted · 31/03/2020 22:19

No. Anything can kill you. Even the most seemingly harmless thing. People die every day. Of everything and anything. If you thought about all of the possible things that could kill you, you would go insane.

oakleaffy · 31/03/2020 22:22

Blue Öyster Cult's ''Don't Fear the Reaper'' helped put death in perspective for me..
I lost my mother to Pneumonia/cor pulmonale when I was a toddler, and just hope there is some form of Afterlife.
If not...we won't know anything about it...It will just be like before we were born.. painless. No one likes the thought of dying, though.
In UK it is still ''The last taboo'' to talk about, it seems.

Our Stepmum isn't afraid of death...{but she is taking care , not socialising} She says '' We all have to die of something''...and mentions the millions of men and women who died in Wars, long before they ever reach old age, Many with no known Grave.

Bless them All.Flowers

Not woried at all. Then again, I take my lead from scientific research and intelligent analysis; rather than the DM and halfwits/bored housewives on MN who have nothing better to do than bitch about who is/is not doing the correct level of quarantine.

Hopeisnotastrategy · 31/03/2020 22:25

@MummyPop00

Not this smart person, ever. This one is different for many reasons , people need to get that if we’re going to defeat it.

Lindy2 · 31/03/2020 22:26

I've been very sad and scared for quite a while now.

The reports from China and then Italy clearly showed it wasn't just the old and unwell at risk.

I try and calm myself through the fact that most people are fine but I'm finding this very difficult. My stress level is extremely high at the moment (home schooling an ADHD child really isn't helping).

Leobynature · 31/03/2020 22:27

I feel like there must be something wrong with me because I am not the least bit scared or anxious and I feel at peace with that. I appreciate that I am very lucky as I am young and healthy. DH has to still work and I work from home. I try to limit the amount of news I’m watching and MN posts I read about the Coronavirus.
I take precautions; hand washing and social distancing. But I am still visiting my parents occasionally (shoot me) and will go for a walk. I try to limit the amount of time I go to the supermarket because it’s grim. I think what would change it for me is if there were lots of child deaths caused by Covid-19 than I think I would be really anxious that my DD will die.
Long term, I am more worried about the impact this lockdown could have on my family (DH could lose his job) and the economy such as businesses closing, unemployment, rise in crime, poverty, more children in care, increase in deaths for woman caused by DV, collapse of the NHS and the massive tax increase we will have to pay to fund it all.

lljkk · 31/03/2020 22:30

No. I'm not worried about anybody dying.

Peapod29 · 31/03/2020 22:33

I’m not particularly worried about getting the virus. I mean obviously I’d rather not but you’re still a lot more likely to die of a lot of other things as a young fit person. For instance sepsis. I had it couple years ago, that was terrifying and probably the 1st time my life has really been at risk of ending.

Lynda07 · 31/03/2020 22:38

Not scared for myself, I stay at home. I disinfect all that is delivered and am careful about hands. It's not foolproof but I do not feel in danger.

I am concerned about others - very. Also occasionally think that when restrictions are lifted and I do go out - I might catch it then. After all, it won't be completely eradicated by then. However I know that's silly.

Cissyandflora · 31/03/2020 22:43

Absolutely awful. So terrified. I went out to Waitrose for necessities today. First time in 10 ish days. Scary.

Pishposhpashy · 31/03/2020 22:43

The reports from China and then Italy clearly showed it wasn't just the old and unwell at risk.

No one ever said it was only them, they said it was mostly them. Which it was, and still is.

Every death from this is a tragedy.

GAT333 · 31/03/2020 22:44

No. I can’t change what is going to happen so just have to hope for the best and if the worst comes, then I can’t do anything about it. I’ve made a will, I have life assurance and I know that those around me would be financially ok should the worst happen. I can’t do any more than that and follow the guidelines.

I still think that even if it kills 500,000 people in the UK then I have still have a more than 99% chance of survival. At my age; possibly 99.9%.

You have to be unlucky to die.

AliciaJohnson · 31/03/2020 22:45

Sorry, but your post sounds like a Daily Mash news item, Cissy. Grin

AliciaJohnson · 31/03/2020 22:46

Lynda, how do you disinfect letters?

Intrigued.

lakeswimmer · 31/03/2020 22:47

There's a difference between people dying OF coronavirus or WITH coronavirus too. I'd like to see those stats.

I came on this thread to point this out - just because someone has the virus in their system when they die, it doesn't mean it killed them - most news reports make a point of stating that an individual died WITH coronavirus and people jump to the conclusion that that's the thing that killed them.

No I'm not worried about it - just as I don't worry about dying in a car accident every time I get in a car. When I drive I take precautions - don't drink alcohol beforehand, wear a seatbelt etc and I'm also taking precautions around this virus in the same way - washing hands, not going out unnecessarily but I'm not losing sleep over it.

Around 500,000 people die in the UK every year for all sorts of reasons and at lots of different ages. This year some of those people will test positive for coronavirus but they may have other illnesses/diseases too which they're not tested for, and which might also be contributory factors to their deaths but we won't know about them. We can't worry about everything, including unknown illnesses, because otherwise we can't function.

Lynda07 · 31/03/2020 22:50

I spray with disinfectant spray. They don't have to be soaking, does make the paper a little crinkly sometimes. Lay them out on a freshly laundered towel or kitchen paper to dry. All the envelopes are immediately thrown away, it's only the 'innards' that I spray. Then I wash hands and hand sanitise. I learned to do that on here! Prior to that I didn't bother or even think of it. However the virus doesn't live on cardboard or paper for more than an hour so they could just be left somewhere if there is no urgency to open.

SonjaMorgan · 31/03/2020 22:52

I am not worried. Just as I am not worried to get in the car everyday. I am doing all I can. Limiting shopping and going out. I am not cleaning my shopping nor am I going without basic groceries.

Pootle40 · 31/03/2020 22:53

No not scared at all. People die all the time with numbers much higher than this on a daily basis. We are obsessing about it because we are hearing the numbers constantly. If the media reported that 1600 died in the uk every day (as they normally do) we would worry about that. But they don't so now we think a few hundred people a day is something out of the ordinary. Remember that constantly being told about the numbers and how deadly it is helps the govt keep everyone following the guidance and not creating problems for the NHS which they've royally stuffed up for years. Young people with no 'known' underlying conditions in a country of 65 million happens all the time you just don't hear about it day in day out.

Frigginella · 31/03/2020 22:54

Yes. But following a failed (thankfully) suicide attempt some years ago I feel like I’m already on borrowed time with my children, no doctor could tell me how I survived.

So yes I’m worried as I am more aware how precious life is.
