Is anybody worried now

Are people getting worried now that even young healthy people are dying from this?

OP posts:
Tootletum · 31/03/2020 21:42

I'm no more worried than I was. The stats don't really tell me much given we're barely testing. So although they look bad, if we tested everyone we'd probably find a far lower death rate. On still a high number of absolute deaths though.

ComtesseDeSpair · 31/03/2020 21:43

No, if I or anyone else dies then we die. It’s just the way it is. Young, seemingly healthy people do sometimes become seriously ill or die from conditions they’re expected to recover from, or die during routine operations, or die after running a marathon because they had a problem they weren’t aware of. You can’t live your life worrying yourself stupid over it.

I’m staying in, I’m socially distancing, but really only to obey the rules. I don’t see death as a massive tragedy for anyone, myself included.

Lovemusic33 · 31/03/2020 21:43

Scared of losing people I love.

Pretty sure I had the virus last week but due to no testing so I can’t relax.

The numbers were high today and to hear the news that it included a 13 year old is scary. I know of a whole family who got it last week including one who was in the vulnerable group, he was very poorly but is on the mend, the rest of the family had mild symptoms.

I think we have to remember that we only hear the awful stories and the worst case scenario’s, 1000’s of people have recovered and most have had mild symptoms. You probably have more chance of being killed in a car accident than you do from Coronavirus.

All we can do is do what we are being told to do, stay in, only go out if you really have too (for food or work). I haven’t been out for over 2 weeks other than for a walk today where I didn’t see anyone. Spent most of last week unwell and now the DD’s are on another 7 days isolation incase they come down with it. Dd2 has a slight cough which maybe all she gets.

I think everyone’s scared to some extent.

LuluJakey1 · 31/03/2020 21:48

I don't want to sound heartless but there are young people who die every week from an unexpected response to a disease that normally would not kill someone their age. We rarely hear about them because the Press don't think it is something that is of national interest. Now they are using these very sad situations to scare us all with.

Wineiscooling · 31/03/2020 21:48

The press is clinging on to the young people who die. It's still a tiny proportion or the total who die and the total who die is a tiny, tiny proportion of those who get ill with it, those who get ill with it is a tiny, tiny, tiny proportion of those who get infected with it, and those who get infected with it is a tiny, tiny, tiny, tiny proportion of general population. So please people, stop scaremongering, gain some perspective and try not to wind each other up about this

Supersimkin2 · 31/03/2020 21:48

No.

Cowardice really isn't anything to be proud of, and neither is spreading panic.

Moomin8 · 31/03/2020 21:48

I agree @ComtesseDeSpair I worked with a young guy who was a gym instructor. Appeared to be young, fit and healthy and died very suddenly of a heart attack 😢

MadameMeursault · 31/03/2020 21:53

What’s the point of this thread? You’re just feeding people’s anxiety. I’ve reported it.

ViciousJackdaw · 31/03/2020 21:54

No, I can't be arsed with worrying. What's the point? Especially as I'm extremely unlikely to die from it anyway. I could have already had it for all I know. If you can say, hand on heart, that you are following the advice to the letter then there is little else you can do.

Lockdown is shitty enough as it is, I have no intention of making it any shittier with unnecessary panic.

TrainspottingWelsh · 31/03/2020 21:56

No. For the same reason I don't spend my time worrying about whether I or my loved ones might die in a riding accident, or get cancer, or die in an rta etc. Statistically they are more likely.

Of course I take precautions to minimise the risk, as I do for any other risk in life. But spending the next day, week, year worrying about it won't change the outcome. It would just be a waste of the last day, week, year.

BeijingBikini · 31/03/2020 21:57

Nah not really, it's so unlikely and even if it kills me, I can't be upset when I'm dead.

Then again I've been on probably 100+ trips abroad and only bought travel insurance for about 2 of them, so that's my attitude to risk.

helpfulperson · 31/03/2020 22:00

473 people died of AIDS in 2018, In total in the UK it has killed 25,000 people. I'm no more scared of dying of COVID-19 than I am of dying of AIDS or cancer or a car accident.

Of course I don't want to die of COVID-19 and I totally agree that the measures we are taking are right but the risk of dying is one we take every day in numerous ways.

Katie2017 · 31/03/2020 22:00

I'm not that worried which is strange because I tend to be a massive worrier in general. My mother knows some people who have had it (or suspected) they had all recently been on holiday. All in my mothers age group (70+) one couple are recovering from it (not confirmed but highly probable), the man had it worse but they are both ok and getting over it. Another couple were self-isolating a couple weeks ago as their friend had it (I assume to know he had it he had to have gone to hospital and got tested but we don't know the friend so don't know how he is.)

My nan is very elderly so I worry for her. I'm still more worried about any of my family getting cancer though-and my mum and grandmother are in the midst of having tests done which is on hold now so that's more of a worry to me.

With regards to statistics-my dad died of prostate cancer-a very common disease yes, but the way his disease acted and spread was very unusual for prostate cancer. He ended up with a complication that happens to something like 2% of men with prostate cancer (actually more like less than 1%) you don't think you or your loved one are ever going to be in that statistic. It's a bitter pill to swallow and ever since I've been trying to find out why it happened, but I guess it's just one of those things-some people have to be in that tiny percentage but it's incredibly unlikely and unlucky.

helpfulperson · 31/03/2020 22:01

Just looked it up, 80,000 people die of cancer in the UK each year. And 1500 in car accidents

RoyalBankOfFuckThis · 31/03/2020 22:03

Yes. Terrified.

Honestly.

I'm so scared one of my kids or I am going to die.

cantata · 31/03/2020 22:03

I'm not in the tiniest bit worried about the virus.

I am, however, severely worried about the MH effects of lockdown.

AliciaJohnson · 31/03/2020 22:05

You do know, don't you OP, that we are all going to die at some point?

Some of this over-reaction to the virus is because people are so afraid of death. Death is not entirely unexpected, especially when people are in their 80s - which the majority of people who die with (not of) CV are.

‘The smart people were worried three months ago.’

Yeah, the smart people also cried wolf over Swine Flu, Bird Flu, Ebola etc etc.

Is it any wonder a lot (the majority?) of people’s initial reaction to this was : ‘meh’

oakleaffy · 31/03/2020 22:08

What is so ironic...I read 'Testament of Youth' about a Nurse in WW1, about 10 years ago, and other books written by Nurses in that era..
I thought ''That can't happen now, medical science will prevent it''

I pay for a flu jab normally, and read the blurb about it being unlikely to offer protection in 'Pandemic Flu'....

When it developed in China, it seemed 'far away', one of those news stories one hears of that makes you think ''Poor souls''...and then carry on.
They were quarantining people coming in from Wuhan, but clearly Air travel was seeding the virus all around the World.

On You Tube last night, an American scoffed at the UJK and Europe being in 'lockdown', saying ''the Wuhan Chinese Virus'' {sic} isn't where she is, and it won't be, either.
{Maybe Trump built a Wall?}
I think most people are scared for their businesses if self employed...and health wise as well. It is a huge change for all of us.
We have two try to b as supportive as possible to each other in these trying times.

P.S Plain flour....how to buy it? ..been trying for weeks .

JaneJeffer · 31/03/2020 22:08
Have a watch of this calming video.
TestBank · 31/03/2020 22:08

Not now. I was, back in January February. Now I am fatalistic. You'll get to that point too, it's really hard to maintain high fear for months. And really thank god it is sparing children, unlike normal flu or other common viruses. The rates are miniscule for serious illness/death for under 20s.

Moomin8 · 31/03/2020 22:09

The thing I'm most scared of is dying (in an circumstance) and my baby dd being left with her neurotic, unbalanced father to bring her up.

FaFoutis · 31/03/2020 22:11

Yes Alicia.

oak the co-op had plain and self-raising yesterday.

SpokeTooSoon · 31/03/2020 22:12

I’m saddened.

I’m not worried. Not in the slightest.
