The number of people in Scotland who have died after being diagnosed with Covid-19 is 76, a rise of 16 on Tuesday, Nicola Sturgeon has announced.

Speaking in the Scottish Parliament, she said 2,300 people had tested positive for the virus, up 317 on the previous day.

Sturgeon said the number of people in intensive care was 147 as of Wednesday, an increase of almost 100 since the same time last week.

The increase in intensive care will be felt in the coming weeks and the number of intensive care beds has been doubled and the Scottish Government aims to ensure it will be quadrupled, Sturgeon added, with operating theatres in NHS hospitals being re-purposed.

defthand · 01/04/2020 12:23

15.6% of all Scotland’s total case count is in intensive care. If we extrapolated that U.K. wide that would mean 3923 patients currently in ICU. Dubious way to figure that number out, maybe. But in the absence of actual U.K. wide info...

lemonjumper · 01/04/2020 12:49

15.6% of all Scotland’s total case count is in intensive care.

Where are you getting 15.6% from? I see 147 in intensive care of a total 2,300 cases. Which is 6.4%.

Quartz2208 · 01/04/2020 12:50

@defthand how do you get 15.6%?

defthand · 01/04/2020 12:54

Bad maths, sorry! Need more coffee today. Grin

1607 by extrapolation then? More sensible under half our total ICU capacity.

Originalyellowbelly · 01/04/2020 13:00

Gammeldragz that's very concerning, it seems this is more than a one off occurence. I wonder what's going on Hmm.

Destroying tests before they were even checked Shock

Jeremy vine has had radio show.. Lots of people who commenting on tests and ppe.

Marsha, teams have been meeting to discuss risk etc. I assume they used models back then?

The models only work with the data put in which back then came put with the low risk.

From the very very start I've had a horrid feeling about sir Patrick valance... I could of course be totally wrong but I just feel he and his team are largely responsible..

Outfoxed · 01/04/2020 13:39

Previous poster asked about Sweden and what we're doing right.. the answer is nothing. Because sweden is doing nothing.
Any if you look at our numbers compared to our population, we are in a worse state than many other countries. Small population in a large country, means its spreading slower, but it's still ramping up. And it's not being taken very seriously but many.

defthand · 01/04/2020 13:54

@Freshairimportanttoo

Feel the same re: Patrick Vallance. Apparently he’s tight with Dominic Cummings, which explains a lot. For all of Trump’s flaws I’ve been much more impressed by the medical scientists he’s surrounded himself with and allowed to lead policy. They were very honest and forthright in the presser last night, in a way that ours never are.

MarshaBradyo · 01/04/2020 13:56

Fresh yes I reckon they did. I wondered if there had been a public release of a model like they did last time but back then I think it was all still behind closed doors.

Freshairimportanttoo · 01/04/2020 13:58

The telegraph article!
Shock

It's again one of those things as a lay person I couldn't give you science about why masks work... But it seems like basic common sense that maybe we don't need science for.
. I've said before it's like doggedly following where the sat nav takes you even though you know it's the long way round

Wales +274 new cases +29 new deaths

covid19-phwstatement.nhs.wales/

Freshairimportanttoo · 01/04/2020 14:01

Trumps man is the best I've seen.

He's also clashed with trump etc. He's been through 5 presidents I think?
He's truly calm but transparent.

Not like jenny harries.

I would imagine even Dominic Cummings would defer to so called experts in the field like Patrick... Who looks very nervous and lost these days...

namechangemania · 01/04/2020 14:02

29 just in Wales Sad

The UK gov site has updated saying last updated 1st April but the figures are the same?

defthand · 01/04/2020 14:04

@Freshairimportanttoo

Dr Anthony Fauci is doing an outstanding job in a difficult environment. I admire him greatly for working within that administration and saving potentially hundreds of thousands of lives. 👍

Helenj1977 · 01/04/2020 14:09

UPDATE on coronavirus (#COVID19) testing in the UK:

As of 9am 1 April, a total of 152,979 people have been tested of which 29,474 tested positive.

As of 5pm on 31 March, of those hospitalised in the UK who tested positive for coronavirus, 2,352 have sadly died.

Helenj1977 · 01/04/2020 14:09

That's a big increase.

Speekachu · 01/04/2020 14:10

563 more deaths. So sad. Sad

Freshairimportanttoo · 01/04/2020 14:10

Actually piers Morgan has just written Pretty much what I've said Grin, boris has been backing the wrong science and needs to use common sense!!

defthand · 01/04/2020 14:12

+4324 cases +563 deaths

That’s awful. Truly Italy territory now

Helenj1977 · 01/04/2020 14:12

Bloody horrible increase. Those poor people.

A 6 month old baby in our town is in hospital with it. People are still out and about like it's a normal Sunday.

Freshairimportanttoo · 01/04/2020 14:12

Dr Anthony also said close borders, don't import more cases, deal with what we have but of course even he, Dr Anthony is working on the back foot...

Freshairimportanttoo · 01/04/2020 14:13

Is this the Cheltenham Madrid stuff coming through?

Eeyoresstickhouse · 01/04/2020 14:13

We are nearing the magical 10k on tests bloody finally. Now ramp it up to at least 25k like they should of been doing for weeks.

The numbers are tragic but really not surprising (I never thought I would say that!)

Noideareally2 · 01/04/2020 14:18

Wow so we've gone 200 higher than Italy at the same point? Not suprised if so.
