The press and media are without a doubt going on about ppe!. Everyday I see something on it and piers Morgan rants about it every day etc.

There is more press suppression.

We are held to ransom and I include government in that, by '' the science ''.

What can ministers with no science, epidemiologist experience do. They and we are held to ransom over this... I totally blame imperial and scientists who met back in January (daily mail) who said our threat level was very low from this!!

The gov has to rely on these people to then do their own response. These models!

Id like to see what went into these bloody models back in January....

Idiots.

Freshairimportanttoo · 01/04/2020 08:53

There is no press suppression, that should say

MarshaBradyo · 01/04/2020 08:54

Fresh there was an Imperial model saying that in January? I didn’t know that.

MarshaBradyo · 01/04/2020 09:04

I mean I’m sure there were models but I haven’t seen what they said

TheStarryNight · 01/04/2020 09:05

Facemasks- have we been asking the wrong question all along?

Interesting article about how a simple change in perspective totally changes scientific opinion on the efficacy of face masks.

Put simply, if your concern is for the whole of society and to stop it being spread, they are very effective. No-one disputes that apparently. If your concern is for the individual and to stop that individual catching it, then there’s debate about how well that works.

So thinking on a individualistic selfish basis has blinded people in authority to the huge benefits of adopting masks en masse.

iron I don't really get your figured but if its cases vs deaths then we cannot really be compared as we are testing differently.

Even though Germany had a higher number of cases i suspect the UK has a more widespread problem and if we tested the same our numbers would be higher than Germany.i don't think Sweden is as bad as us. What is their population too? And how many people per square mile.

picklemewalnuts · 01/04/2020 09:16

Sweden has many single person households, which they are expecting to slow the spread.

Random18 · 01/04/2020 09:26

Thanks pickle.

Its one of the reasons I think we need to be careful comparing ourselves to other countries unless the demographics are exactly the same.

Birmingham is badly hit but I suspect they have a lot more multi generational households compared to some other areas.

I'm in the WM region and our area does not seem too bad at the moment although there have been cases. But we are quite different demographically to Birmingham.

mrshoho · 01/04/2020 09:29

Theres are concerns from a large group of drs in Sweden regarding the approach their government is taking and they have put these concerns in writing. It looks as though Sweden has taken a gamble and far from out of the woods. I don't have a link but will post if I find it.

Hippywannabe · 01/04/2020 09:30

The local GP practice put out chairs at 2 m intervals so the vulnerable didn't havebto stand. They were stolen!,!

CrunchyCarrot · 01/04/2020 09:30

But Sweden are still socialising, travelling on public transport, etc. They have brought in some measures but nothing like the lockdowns we are seeing elsewhere. Their testing rate is low. Just looking at case numbers isn't very helpful as countries vary so widely in how many people are being tested.

Thanks @TheStarryNight Interesting facts around face mask effectiveness.

I'd like to see the journalists press more in the daily briefing...the next journalist could press them on the answer they gave to the previous question, between them they could actually hold them to account fir the lies about PPE

justchecking1 · 01/04/2020 10:34

At that early stage, thousands of swabs sent to PHE by GPs who suspected their patients had contracted the disease were destroyed before they were analysed because they did not meet strict criteria, sources revealed.

I suspected something like this. I just couldn't understand why the GP sentinel screening wasn't throwing up hundreds of cases when it was clear there was considerable community spread

YangShanPo · 01/04/2020 10:41

If everyone who has currently been diagnosed with corona is in hospital does that mean they would all have died if hospital care wasn't available?

The one saying we were over reacting essentially?

RedToothBrush · 01/04/2020 10:44

Birmingham is badly hit but I suspect they have a lot more multi generational households compared to some other areas.

An MP from the area has talked about there being certain cultural problems. Muslims and Sikhs were still gathering to pray including the elderly and at risk. There is potentially a language issue here at play amongst those who have poor English. In addition to the multiple generational households. So the virus has been particularly devastating to parts of the area.

I note here the higher levels of diabetes in the British Pakistani population compared to the general population too.

what an excellent idea! Can someone tweet Laura K and ask her Smile

I bet the consequences would be draconian .But then that would be telling in itself .

picklemewalnuts · 01/04/2020 11:25

I don't at all think Sweden are ok. I think they'll have problems. But they have more small isolated communities, and people living alone, so the spread will look different. Contact tracing may well be easier.

No country is just like another.
No bugger seems to be counting consistently.
No numbers are worth the paper they are written on.

Gammeldragz · 01/04/2020 12:11

@Originalyellowbelly that happened at my surgery. Signed for, not by us... Vanished!
Apparently replacements on the way but they said that weeks ago...
