MIT said virus lingers a few hours after sneeze or cough

Hard to know which to go with

picklemewalnuts · 31/03/2020 16:35

Relevant and interesting . I watch this guy every day.

picklemewalnuts · 31/03/2020 16:36

On 1.75 speed!

picklemewalnuts · 31/03/2020 16:37

I'm sorry Viva. That's very sad.

Beebityboo · 31/03/2020 16:40

I'm terrified that it might linger in the air for long periods of time. Especially as most of us still have no choice but to go to grocery stores etc so we can feed our families. Feels like no matter the precautions I'm taking it won't be enough to stop us from catching it.
I am struggling today Sad.

defthand · 31/03/2020 16:42

Sweden’s numbers ticking up today. Their “business as usual” approach looking high risk.

middleager · 31/03/2020 16:48

I was sceptical yesterday (there was a thread on here that included prematurely celebrating the apparent decline and I was the voice of doom and gloom).

Why would it be that the UK's figures miraculously declined when numbers have exploded in like for like countries? That would not make sense. We're not special.

Why, when I'm still seeing pictures of dickheads nipping to The Range for bedding plants?
Why, when my aunt and so many pop out for a newspaper daily?

Any false hope breeds complacency.

I'm angry because society is fucking around with my life and I need these selfish pricks to stop shopping in stores. I'm bricking it because I have a teenager with asthma and our children were used as the herd in this.

Viva that is very sad news indeed.

EmeraldShamrock · 31/03/2020 16:49

Are they disinfecting the streets in the UK. AFAIK it is not been done in Ireland, Italy Spain and China have, should we? Well the government?

KOKOagainandagain · 31/03/2020 16:50

This discusses the airborne claims from WHO and compares to research carried out by MIT from about 10 mins onwards.

Newbeginnings2 · 31/03/2020 16:53

I’m getting ready to go the supermarket for the first time in weeks, got no choice anymore as it’s impossible to get a click and collect or home delivery now. Feeling quite apprehensive about it, hoping they still actually have some things I need at this time of day too!

WhyNotMe40 · 31/03/2020 16:53

Could someone please summarise the MIT v WHO airborne thing? Am around the kids so can't just watch a video

middleager · 31/03/2020 16:54

Dubai also sanitises its streets.

Delatron · 31/03/2020 16:55

I agree @middleager. I got told off on a thread for being pessimistic and wanting deaths!! As if. It just wouldn’t make sense for us to see a decline or even flattening of the curve when 2 weeks ago we had Cheltenham, Crufts and football matches.

Any positive effect of lockdown will take another few weeks at least and maybe more.

MarshaBradyo · 31/03/2020 17:01

Just watched excellent Dr John C video on spread
So infectious
Survives on plastic and other surfaces 72 hours
3 hours aerosol
High viral load as upper respiratory

I know people know this but he’s good at explaining difference to first SARS

Ladyellow · 31/03/2020 17:02

There are big different in regions as well don’t forgot. I’m in Bristol and my Best friend is one of the hospital managers for the BRI- it is very quiet... They had planned for 250 anticipated covid admission this weekend - they got 43. There are 5 people in ITU. In the other Bristol hospital there are 3 in ITU - not what was expected at all.

MarshaBradyo · 31/03/2020 17:02

Has anyone seen what happens to test after 7 days? They said after 7 you are less likely to be infectious. Or max 14. Do you still test positive after this?

Ladyellow · 31/03/2020 17:07

Also death rate will now go up whatever happens as they’re counting nursing home deaths . Even this is not simple. In the home my sister In law works in they are registering anybody who has covid and dies as a covid death but she was saying a good proportion were receiving end of life care for dementia pre a covid diagnosis...

IronNeonClasp · 31/03/2020 17:08

@Delatron also here in Wales the Stereophonics concert. Allegedly 'thousands' attended. Max capacity is 5000. I've already said they have blood on their hands..

www.itv.com/news/wales/2020-03-16/stereophonics-criticised-for-not-cancelling-their-cardiff-gig-amid-coronavirus-pandemic/

Delatron · 31/03/2020 17:08

I guess there are clusters and because we didn’t test enough we have no idea where these clusters are until loads turn up in hospitals. If we had tested more then the resources in Bristol for example could have been temporarily been diverted?

Another reason we were wrong to not widely test

SansaSnark · 31/03/2020 17:08

Deaths per million in The Netherlands and Belgium now 61. That's higher than anywhere except Italy and Spain. If you look at their case/death numbers, they don't appear that high because they have relatively small populations, but clearly things are getting pretty bad in both countries Sad

Delatron · 31/03/2020 17:10

Yep @IronNeonClasp utter madness when we think about it now. The government also for encouraging these large events to go ahead.

MurrayTheMonk · 31/03/2020 17:14

And yet Boris's approval rating continues to rise? I just don't get it... We STILL aren't testing enough... they allowed insane social events to go ahead...,total fail on the PPE... why do people think they are doing well?

(The only bits I think have been ok have been the financial stuff-though there are gaps-and the Excel-even if they have taken my sodding PPE for it)

defthand · 31/03/2020 17:15

@SansaSnark

I’m unsurprised. I lived in the Netherlands for three years. They are very stoic about healthcare and had a very blasé attitude about covid-19 at first. Paracetamol is prescribed for just about every malady there!

ajandjjmum · 31/03/2020 17:15

Wolves played against a Spanish team towards the end of February, and there has been a large number of deaths in Wolverhampton. Makes you wonder......

IronNeonClasp · 31/03/2020 17:24

@CrunchyCarrot - thanks missed your figures. Terrifying and I don't know why this NHS guy is playing it all down tbh.
