What's the latest news? I can't watch the update as WFH!

middleager · 31/03/2020 17:26

There was a Liverpool Madrid match three months ago and with the centres in the Wirral, I would have expected Liverpool's figures to be higher.

The hotspots are London, Sheffield, Birmingham and Slough apparently.

I'm in Birmingham and with Crufts, Cheltenham up the road (airport serving both events) and infected Diamond passengers flying back here, we had no chance.

We are, however, the largest city outside London, so perhaps not that unsurprising.

Somelady · 31/03/2020 17:26

A sneeze can fly 10- 20 metres per second creating a cloud of sneeze particles about 4 metres each direction from the source of the sneeze. Or something. And sneeze particles with virus has been found be carried around intact in turbulent air of air ventilation systems. That's really disgusting in general.

middleager · 31/03/2020 17:26

Three weeks ago, not months!

middleager · 31/03/2020 17:27

I'm watching this conference and it feels like spin is at play here.

Ladyellow · 31/03/2020 17:29

It will get worse everywhere of course, including Bristol but as we’ve all done the SD measures at the same time places that aren’t so bad yet MAY experience more of a flattened curve...

georgedawes · 31/03/2020 17:29

Also death rate will now go up whatever happens as they’re counting nursing home deaths . Even this is not simple. In the home my sister In law works in they are registering anybody who has covid and dies as a covid death but she was saying a good proportion were receiving end of life care for dementia pre a covid diagnosis...

These deaths are being reported separately by the ONS, not in the daily figures. So sadly, they are that high.

Mittens030869 · 31/03/2020 17:31

@Somelady Except that sneezing isn't a symptom of COVID-19, but of a cold? Can a cough do the same? But yes, I agree that it's a gross thought.

Somelady · 31/03/2020 17:35

Yeah the vid posted p13 that MIT talking about coughs and sneezes

SansaSnark · 31/03/2020 17:39

@defthand I remember at the end of February/ early march, when we were just starting to see community transmission being picked up by UK testing, I read an article that said the Dutch had only done about 200 tests and already picked up community transmission. I think there was an issue with an undiagnosed case in a hospital too.

I hope they are able to get things under control!

SingforAbsolution · 31/03/2020 17:46

@Ladyellow

I'm in the Midlands. We're full and about to officially turn operating theatres in to mini ITU's in the next day or two. Staff from other areas are being drafted in and looking after vented patients with two or three days training.
Get staff from other areas in and trained now. You're going to need them.

Helenj1977 · 31/03/2020 17:47

No word on Boris's health.

IronNeonClasp · 31/03/2020 17:48

This guy is delusional.

Ladyellow · 31/03/2020 17:48

@georgedawes ah thought they were all going in together from today.... I think figures will go up everyday for two/ three weeks though- that’s what we’ve been told is going to happen. If they don’t start declining after that then social distancing hasn’t worked that well.

georgedawes · 31/03/2020 17:55

Yes sad to hear those numbers are 'just' hospital deaths. It's going to be a long haul :(

I suppose we have to look to Italy, Spain, France etc to see what the curve is likely to be here.

Babyroobs · 31/03/2020 17:57

Doesn't slough have a lot of people coming and going from other European countries ( ordinarily ) ? I wonder if this is why it's such a hot spot ?

Noideareally2 · 31/03/2020 18:02

We are still not far off Italy and numbers have been close to theirs mostly, so why would we not end up where they are? Is it realistic people saying we won't be as bad?

OldQueen1969 · 31/03/2020 18:03

Evening all.

Solidarity and best wishes to all.

Just caught that woman - Harries is it? on the Sky News bit about the press conference.

Is is just me or did she outright lie about our robust programme of community testing?? Given that symptomatic people were not being tested in hospitals unless admitted a mere two weeks ago, when did all this community testing start to happen?

Delatron · 31/03/2020 18:05

She also implied we had plenty of PPE equipment...

turkeyontheplate · 31/03/2020 18:11

Yeah, I think today was the day Jenny Harries made the leap from "shifty and disingenuous" to "outright fucking liar".

And they need to stop Gove doing the press briefings. He knows absolutely nothing and sounds like a 12yo doing a speaking exam. It's not inspiring much confidence.

Green shoots ffs.

defthand · 31/03/2020 18:16

I find Harries very disingenuous. TBH I’ve stopped watching the briefings, it’s all spin. Marked contrast to the Scottish briefings.

IronNeonClasp · 31/03/2020 18:17

Anyone watching Sky news live? Have you seen their equipment? This has been one of my worries all along...

IronNeonClasp · 31/03/2020 18:30

What I mean by that is compared to Italy - our frontline staff don't seem to have even the basic facemarks let alone industrial ones and double linings/gloves.

MurrayTheMonk · 31/03/2020 18:34

Jennie implied that all the PPE is stuck in some warehouse somewhere? Just no one to bring it. I'll happily go and get it if that's the hold up 🤷🏽‍♀️
I don't believe her

DressingGownofDoom · 31/03/2020 18:38

Does anyone know when Italy's cases are expected to start declining?
