Our human rights have been taken away

Soph7777 · 29/03/2020 23:40

I know it's for a good cause.

I know it's to save lives.

But our basic human rights have been taken from under us, in the short space of a week.

I find this part most of all the scariest.

I'm really struggling mentally with government control to this extent.

How long can this last before people lose their minds and rebel?

@Vaginandtonic again totally missing the point.

I am following all the rules anyway. It is kind of strange that you don't let anyone else express how they feel. Were you always like that?

CoolCarrie · 30/03/2020 12:17

I don’t understand why people can’t see that the reasons for lockdown are : 1 to reduce the amount of people having to go to hospital for stupid reasons to allow the health services to prepare for a huge increase in virus effected people when it happens.
2 : to reduced the amount of people that pass the virus to each other to allow care to be available to all who need it.
It’s that simple. My dh who is a doctor , not in the UK , has spent the last two weeks discharging as many patients as they can to free up the beds for the enviable influx of people with this virus. We have a lockdown here on a bigger scale than the UK, and this is a country which had a terrible system denying the majority of citizens they basic humans rights , and we have confidence that all the rights will be returned afterward this shit storm is over.

Amymayapple · 30/03/2020 12:18

@cornishdreams1 did you miss where I said, numerous times, that I am following the rules, and yet amazingly I am still expressing my opinion, while following the rules.

It is hard to talk to you when you don't read the posts, or maybe you are not able to read at all

I am just puzzled what you think the alternative is? No one wants this, we all wish this virus didn't exist. But what is the alternative for governments? Please, tell me!

cornishdreams1 · 30/03/2020 12:20

Amy well you are going to receive a slow clap from me, so you are abiding by the rules, but you don't feel you should. Okay. Well why are you following the guidance then? If you genuinely believe that all of the scientists and the entire medical profession across the whole world have got this wrong....

MarshaBradyo · 30/03/2020 12:21

Amy you can express it but you are basing it on your knowledge of the 1228 deaths. It’s better if you have the full information on what would happen.

@cornishdreams1 - if you reach that door, make sure you don't go further than 2km from it or you'll disappear in a puff of smoke.

cornishdreams1 · 30/03/2020 12:25

vagina That was a close shave (no pun intended) Grin

Vaginandtonic · 30/03/2020 12:26

Still waiting to hear Amy's solution for dealing with this virus with no social distancing measures...

cornishdreams1 · 30/03/2020 12:26

london one could only hope and pray after reading this thread! Grin

Some of these posts are really horrible. Good for you if you're not upset by lockdown or moaning about it, but some people really lack human empathy so please don't think you're wonderful.

I have this to say - we are not 'all in the same boat' and by that I mean the experience of lockdown is different for everyone. I suppose I am lucky that I'm finding it ok and can see the positives. We are lucky that we have so many resources to keep us busy - many many TV programmes and films to watch, podcasts to listen to, books to read, online resources for exercise, hobbies (existing and new), we can chat to friends via FaceTime or Zoom, yesterday we took part in a pub quiz via Zoom - the list is endless! There is no reason for anyone to be bored.

But I totally understand that others may not be so lucky and are finding it very hard and I really sympathise. There is no point saying to them they are lucky, some people are much worse off etc. It's not a competition, we are all entitled to feel as we do and I'm sure those who are struggling do count their blessings but it might not make it any easier to cope with.

It's been barely a week and some people will really struggle with the long term impact. But - I think it will actually get easier not harder. It will become our new normal and easier to deal with. It's the change that makes is so difficult - we are USED to being able to go out freely, see our friends, go out for lunch and so on. In the weeks to come, hopefully people will get used to this new way of living and come to terms with it. And acceptance makes things so much easier to deal with, rather than counting the days/weeks till it's over.

Personally I don't feel that my human rights have been affected - I am able to go out for food, out for a walk/run/cycle ride, I can sit in my garden or slob on the sofa as I choose. I still feel I have plenty of choice how to spend my days. And since Boris' announcement last week, I feel more positive because it brings us closer to clamping down on the virus.

Tiredtiredtired100 · 30/03/2020 12:32

People won’t rebel until it’s over, when the Tory government and their general poor treatment and lack of empathy for the masses will have come home to roost. That’s what happened after the Second World War; Churchill got kicked out of office because people wanted homes and health care and safety and community. I’m just hoping the same will happen again.

AnneOfCloves · 30/03/2020 12:33

Yes, it's a PITA to be confined to the home. But for heaven's sake, we are being asked to do this to save lives, allow the NHS to do its job and to keep our society safe.

We aren't in the trenches, we're on our couches with Netflix. Woman the heck up and accept we've got it a lot easier than other places. This isn't being done to you, this is a situation everyone must endure.

Billben · 30/03/2020 12:34

I'm really struggling mentally with government control to this extent.
😂
The government has to put controls like these in place because of pathetic people like you OP. You are an adult, give your head a wobble and try to think of others for a change.

How long can this last before people lose their minds and rebel?
😂
I hope they’d be met with the water cannons.

EmpressoftheMundane · 30/03/2020 12:35

I agree OP. It's important for our society that things normalise as soon as it is safe to do so. We don't want any of these restrictions to linger longer than necessary.

We all understand that these restrictions are here for a good reason at the moment. But I am surprised by how many people seem to relish them and obsess over enforcing them in petty ways. A whole lot of people seem to really enjoy being taken in hand and are begging for more!

Mummyoflittledragon · 30/03/2020 12:36

I’ve been largely living this way for the past 8, almost 9 years due to chronic illness and disability. I have accepted my life.

People like you are struggling with cognitive dissonance. Acceptance is not about rolling over. Acceptance is about acknowledging you cannot change the current situation. Once you get to acceptance, life will be easier.

This is a temporary blip in your life. Things will turn to normal. There is no governmental conspiracy. The threat is from the virus. And from the likes of Russia, who’ve once again challenged the uk defences.

lesleyw1953 · 30/03/2020 12:36

So, what would be your solution?

BeijingBikini · 30/03/2020 12:37

Do people know how to debate without calling people names?

Just because you don't agree with someone doesn't mean you have to personally attack them

FaFoutis · 30/03/2020 12:40

Why are the relishers of rules so ANGRY?

twosoups1972 · 30/03/2020 12:40

@Tiredtiredtired100 that may be so, but do you really think the current situation would be any better under a different government? Previous Labour governments have hardly done a good job either have they?

BeijingBikini · 30/03/2020 12:41

We never completely had freedom - for example, you don't have the freedom to text while driving or drunk drive because it poses a significant risk to others. In light of current data, governments worldwide think that going out "as usual" would pose significant risk to others. Hence the laws have changed. Hopefully temporarily until the risk is lowered........
