The rise in the hero complex

PrincessConsueIaBananaHammock · 28/03/2020 17:08

There has been a certain rise in people claiming they are or thinking they are heroes. "We are saving lives".

That basically involves an avid desire to report anyone that dares to leave the house, police everyone else, dismiss the worries and concerns of others, ridiculing, attacking, bullying and emotionally blackmailing anyone who struggles, some kind of irrational fear/hate of children and gleeful virtue signaling about how much better they are at staying home. Abusing key workers that in their eyes are not doing their job,for doing their job, following guidelines(made up or official) ,not following guidelines,in the wrong clothes etc.

There are people who are seriously struggling right now, emotionally, financially, mentally, physically etc. People that are becoming more and more vulnerable as more restrictions and public policing come in. People that have killed themselves due to the situation we are in.

They are not heroes, they are not saving lives.

4 adults in our household and no income.

Dp and I can claim universal credit, (about £500 per month which wont even cover council tax and power.
Dd will get some money under the self employment rules.
She had just started to break through and had so much work that has all been cancelled.

Same with Ds but he falls outside the self employed rules as he had only started within the last year.

My family are immigrants and I grew up on stories of friendly neighbours turning on their friends and reporting on them.

I didn’t think the UK was like this. Quite worrying how some people have turned out to be no different to those “friendly neighbours” 80 years ago

PrincessConsueIaBananaHammock · 29/03/2020 14:13

I didn’t think the UK was like this.

It's never really about the country, it's about the people. And people tend to follow certain trends ,especially in times of crisis.

I've deleted FB from my phone - all the virtue signalling was driving me mad. The final straw was people criticising neighbours/streets for not joining in the clapping thing - maybe they had their own reasons for not doing it but it's their own business and up to them - the do-gooders are having a field day on FB so I'm leaving them to it, I can do without it. This thread is great for some much-needed balance!

Oh god that nonsense. From people who people who probably voted for the party who cut the funding in the first place and maybe some wbi even wasted resources a few times themselves..

Amd the judgement for not clapping...maybe some people do their bit by working for them. Not everyone wears scrubs or uniform when working at a hospital.

FrangipaniBlue · 29/03/2020 15:25

I stayed off MN for a few days earlier this week for the reasons the OP started this thread, it really was awful especially the threads about people treating last weekend like a bank holiday, so much vitriol directed towards people who, quite rightly, were concerned for their local areas and the potential strain on already stretched resources.

Then the vitriol seemed to move towards the self employed, because apparently we're all cash hoarding tax evading scum Confused

I'm loving this thread BTW it's like all the level headed sensible people have congregated en masse Grin

Yes to this, although not sure my DH would agree that I’m level headed or sensible 😌

Yeah well, no one asked him. I bet the Spanish soldiers would agree.Grin

And now ordering online anything "nice" and not essential/necessary is criminal, selfish and shocking.

Once again people struggling with their mental health are being ignored when they explain why some things are just as essential to them and their wellbeing and meds and food.

Order what the fuck you like, you're keeping delivery drivers and warehouse personnel from joining the dole queue like alot of us.

I think people are forgetting that by doing all this isolating we are not intending to stamp out the virus completely in one go....well that's the impression I get

SarahTancredi · 29/03/2020 16:46

Well yes I didn't spend an hour in a virtual queue at 1am to not at least get some nice bubble bath with my tampons...

NewYearNewJob123 · 29/03/2020 16:57

That's what a lot of the MN neostasi don't get. Telling someone on here they're a potential murderer or a selfish fuck for buying hot cross buns or mascara with their shop for 'essentials' or not to order some books on-line as 'non essential' means more businesses close, more factories etc and the economy being even more in the shitter than it already will be. Which is already a dire situation.

And they think they're a hero 'saving lives'. More will be lost in the long term due to that attitude than any COVID deaths.

Greysparkles · 29/03/2020 17:04

They'll be the same ones bitching about price rises and not being able to get same day delivery after all of this

SarahTancredi · 29/03/2020 17:17

You should have seen the looks I got earlier.

I had to go to boots to pick up what wasn't available online and what imposed limits have ensured that the 2 san pro requiring females couldn't get everything we need for both of us in one purchase and what was unavailable in sainsbury when I was already there for food I cameon today and my order hasn't arrived yet, well I ducked down an aisle in order to avoid 2 customers coming towards me and about to breach the 2m rule and happens to grab myself the hair dye I was stood in front of It wasn't why I was there and I wasnt responsible for the empty shelves in the shops which had already meant I had to visit more intended so why look at me like that.

If there had been chocolate at the counter spotted while I was paying I'd have grabbed some to. If you are there already i dont see the difference it makes.

TheGreatWave · 29/03/2020 17:23

My mum didn't go out as she said that her ndn was out first and she thought she would put herself at risk if she did. So the same people moaning at her for going out, are moaning at her for staying in.

PrincessConsueIaBananaHammock · 29/03/2020 17:28

Clap for NHS staff definitely had a certain ring to it Grin

I was so worried about this that i emailed the stockist (one person) to see if they would like me to continue ordering or leave it til this calms down

RickOShay · 29/03/2020 17:54

Are there any Spanish soldiers left?

bringthegin · 29/03/2020 18:25

Fuck it, I just ordered more gin, a crate of sweets...and chocolate.

I need to be able to bribe the kids to allow me to video conference, the chocolate is to give me energy for the stupid hours I've having to put in & well the gin - that is for my sanity.

middleager · 29/03/2020 18:26

bring I need sweets. And gin.
Where's a good place to order from. Amazon?

PrincessConsueIaBananaHammock · 29/03/2020 18:30

I've ordered little chocolate bunnies to do a egg hunt for Easter. There will be fun!! And Spanish soldiersGrin

A woman who runs a charity for sick kids in our town set up a local fb group to collect volunteers and match them up with people who were quarantined/ isolating to provide contactless delivery service/ collect medicines etc (it was flooded with volunteers desperate to help). Three days after she started it, a man from the next community posted on the normal town fb page about how he was a trained disaster manager, blah blah blah and very important with lots of knowledge, and that he was thinking of setting up a fb group to coordinate volunteers. Everyone replied saying ‘um, here’s the link bro. X already did it three days ago. Sign up as a volunteer if you want to help out.’ He’s not content to volunteer. He has to be the fucking hero.
Two weeks later and he’s on the local radio spouting off about his successful volunteer group that is providing such a valuable service to vulnerable people in their time of need. And taking the thanks for it. No doubt he’ll be polishing his mayor’s volunteer award in due course.
I actually want to kill him. I know it’s irrational. He has NARCISSIST in giant fucking letters on his forehead. I’ve never met him and just seeing his name all over the site gives me the fucking rage. Every single post is unutterably self important.
And I can’t clap. Sorry. I’m a miserable curmudgeon. I’ll do practical shit to help out wherever and however I can. But I can’t do ‘look at me clapping’ which makes fuck all difference.

There are people so desperate to be seen to be ‘doing good’ that they are literally trampling those quietly getting on with the real work. Deliberately. I mean, I have no doubt in his head that his taking over the entire enterprise was such a help to poor x with her disabled children to look after while he had the Very Important knowledge and experience to be able to much more successfully get Jim B to drop off the potatoes to Mrs S at number 4.
Twat.

GrumpyMug2 · 29/03/2020 18:39

I just ordered a skipping rope off Amazon for my son. Don't give a shit. I will be ordering more stuff too as and when I think of it. Also don't give a fuck.

GrumpyMug2 · 29/03/2020 18:41

If we are going to get through this, then we can't all sit around saying that books, hair dye etc are non essential. They are if we are all meant to stay inside for months and not go mental.

I need to order leggings and tops as I realised I don't have enough normal clothes to last a week and have had to wear a work dress today whilst doing housework on a Sunday

Greysparkles · 29/03/2020 18:58

The whole clap for the NHS Hmm

I'll clap when my best friend who is a nurse doesn't have to cover her uniform in plastic carrier bags to be able feel safe to go into the covid ward.

bringthegin · 29/03/2020 20:10

@middleager yep amazon, still delivering in a sensible time, so must be on the essentials list
