The rise in the hero complex

PrincessConsueIaBananaHammock · 28/03/2020 17:08

There has been a certain rise in people claiming they are or thinking they are heroes. "We are saving lives".

That basically involves an avid desire to report anyone that dares to leave the house, police everyone else, dismiss the worries and concerns of others, ridiculing, attacking, bullying and emotionally blackmailing anyone who struggles, some kind of irrational fear/hate of children and gleeful virtue signaling about how much better they are at staying home. Abusing key workers that in their eyes are not doing their job,for doing their job, following guidelines(made up or official) ,not following guidelines,in the wrong clothes etc.

There are people who are seriously struggling right now, emotionally, financially, mentally, physically etc. People that are becoming more and more vulnerable as more restrictions and public policing come in. People that have killed themselves due to the situation we are in.

They are not heroes, they are not saving lives.

Ha yes its all "I'm reporting people"

For what? If you are at home like you say then all you have done is seen someone leave their house. U have no idea why or where they are going.

And as for me me me I'm.important too

Well email or tweet said company and let them know they have missed crucial.frontline staff off a.list of people.owed freebies at subway or whatever. But no then no one will know how important you are if you dont announce it to 300 face book.friends first...

And as for the photos. Your bloody outside too then arent you? Why is your reason valid but two teenage brothers who live together can't possibly walk around an empty field? O my one person here who has no concept of the 2m rule and that's the nosy arse taking the photo . Dont worry the halo is in the post. Contactless delivery of course.

I shall look forward to the big announcement when it arrives after you moan about the postie who wasnt in hazmat gear .

Greysparkles

Maybe these people could put their money where their mouth is and give you the money to stay at home.

All these people screeching about how everyone should stay at home have probably still got an income.

Outside of their bubble I don’t think they realise how other people live

Nicketynac · 29/03/2020 11:30

@TabbyMumz I have to disagree about support workers. I work in an intensive care unit (as an allied health professional) and I have seen them in action. During a resus situation, they fetch drugs, run blood samples through the gas machines, phone blood bank etc. They might not be carrying out chest compressions but we couldn’t function without them.
And in normal day to day ward life, they clean patients, are responsible for ordering almost everything except drugs, clean equipment, set machinery e.g. ventilators up so that they are ready when needed plus many many other jobs.
No idea what they do on other wards but they are absolutely front line and essential to us.

I've been trying to organise a #clapfortheunemployed ... I haven't got much traction.

I think something broke in me when I saw my neighbour sobbing in the street, overwhelmed by the financial impact of it all, then I came on here & saw the gleeful, drama loving twats calling people nurse murderers. I must have been more idealistic than I thought because I've honestly been shocked at how quickly & cruelly people have turned. I now understand how the mob works.

Mumsnet has a contingent of people who are so misanthropic & dysfunctional that they've been living like this out of choice - I think some of them are enjoying the opportunity to feel part of something.

SmileyClare · 29/03/2020 11:39

GreySparkles same here, no income for the foreseeable future, and all our bills and rent are mounting up. We are going to be in a fuck ton of debt after this and I spend most days trying not to cry. You have my sympathy Flowers

Virtue signallers just have a new project now. The guy filming himself talking to homeless people reminded me of when somone asked a while ago, what they could do/where to go for weekend entertainment on a budget of £10.

One suggestion was to go and chat to homeless people as "they probably have some good stories." HmmShock

Yes the eagerness to report, call the police ,watch others etc is baffling to me.

People that have always been free and at least basic rights eager to throw it all away without even considering that it could turn on them or the innocent caught in the cross fire.

There have already been posts from/about key workers (here and on fb) including nurses and carers being shouted at for going to their jobs. Especially carers since they are seen going into various homes.

I come from an ex communist block country. The type of country where phones were listened to, any connection to the west no matter how tenuous could cost your job or freedom, where interviews had to be taken and your family interrogated if you wanted to marry someone in the military, where listening stations where set up next door, where people disappeared in the night etc.

I doubt it will ever get this bad here, but it is possible, and the chief reporters are paving the way.

I am getting very concerned about the possible abuse of power by the police, which comes under the guise of 'saving lives'. I don't know if anyone else has seen this, but looking at the Sunday newspaper headlines on the bbc news website, there is a front page report about police tipping black dye into a famously blue watered pond in Derbyshire, to stop people gathering around it. There is an acompanying photo. Is this actually true? If so, what gives police the right to despoil a beauty spot and possibly kill watery wildlife? Perhaps someone who lives locally knows about this? I really find it hard to believe. What next - they'll blow up Snowden to stop people climbing up it, or they'll put tar all over the beaches to keep people off?

Flaxmeadow · 29/03/2020 11:53

Yes the eagerness to report, call the police ,watch others etc is baffling to me

Yet here we are

PrincessConsueIaBananaHammock · 29/03/2020 11:58

@longearedbat is that the toxic one with really high ph levels? If so , they've been adding black dye to it for years.

Laniakea: I have a very uncomfortable feeling which i'm not liking that it seems almost as if some people are going to be disappointed if thousands upon thousands don't die, the NHS doesn't collapse, the army isn't brought in to 'control the masses' and the Police don't start arresting people for sitting down in a park.

And they don't seem to give a thought to the longer term problems of more people dying than of CV because they've been shouting at people for being selfish bastards for buying something 'non-essential' and even more businesses therefore close down, more unemployed, more being made homeless etc. More driven into poverty with all its associated mental and physical health risks etc.

And all the already vulnerable whose mental health goes further down the shitter because they're finding this situation hard and come on to MN to be told they're murders or cunts by hundreds of people because they asked if its okay that they made a cake for a friend and left it on their doorstep.

VisionQuest · 29/03/2020 12:06

Charlie sounds like a right pain in the arse

PrincessConsueIaBananaHammock · 29/03/2020 12:08

@BlueMoon1103 I'm sorry you're struggling and that it's made worse by the vile bs on here. Take the walk, keep yourself safe. Your mental health is essential and necessary, just like anyone else's basic needs.

OP posts:
longearedbat · 29/03/2020 12:11

@PrincessConsueIaBananaHammock ... probably. In which case that is a paper bending the truth somewhat. Well, there's a surprise. Phew, I really thought the world had gone totally mad for a minute (instead of being just three quarters of the way there).

Greysparkles · 29/03/2020 12:19

Normally followed by the "what?you don't have at least 3 months income in savings?" Faux naïveté

Oh yes, I love this one. Obnoxious bastards.

I'm currently applying for jobs everywhere, will probably end up cleaning at a hospital or stacking shelves, whilst my kids will have to stay home alone.
But they'll be out front applauding then.

VivaLeBeaver · 29/03/2020 12:24

I hate all the fake, scare mongering shit on fb. That one posted down this thread about don’t leave your house from tomorrow unless for bread....a high up friend of mine has warned me, etc.

It’s total shit. A friend of mine who works in a supermarket believed it and was terrified. She’s scared shitless about sitting on a checkout till serving hundreds of people, no screen, etc. And stuff like that will freak enough people out that they quit their jobs and then where will we be.

wowfudge · 29/03/2020 12:27

There was another about drinking fluid washing it into your stomach rather than it getting into your respiratory tract and if you could do 10 deep breaths in the morning you didn't have fibrosis. That absolute shite which purported to be from a friend working at a GP practice was forwarded to me by a medical professional!

Puzzledandpissedoff · 29/03/2020 12:29

I mentioned this on another thread, but a dear frind's being driven mad by her MIL who's appointed herself the local expert/FB "advice source" on the back of having "worked in medicine" and "knowing the top doctors"

She actually did a couple of years' admin in a hospital, and that was decades ago ...

HopingItsNot · 29/03/2020 12:52

@wowfudge

A relative posted that one.. When I pointed out it was false.. Tumbleweed. Made me really cross they believe that stuff.

PrincessConsueIaBananaHammock · 29/03/2020 13:14

@longearedbat what can I say? Panic sells.

Articles like these feed both camps , the people that want to report because it must be serious if the police are taking such measure and at the same time reassuring themselves their actions are needed and the people worried about abuses of power and losing basic freedoms.

TheGreatWave · 29/03/2020 13:15

The hot drinks one is ridiculous, some poor mum on a Facebook group was trying to get her food adverse child to drink hot drinks and really concerned that she wouldn't. It was causing unnecessary stress and distress.

GrumpyMug2 · 29/03/2020 13:24

I was going to not look at Mumsnet anymore as the attitudes, and just general nastiness on some threads was too much plus I also got the feeling that some people are almost enjoying scaring/berating people. But now I have found this thread and it shall now be the only thread I look at

PrincessConsueIaBananaHammock · 29/03/2020 13:28

That's the issue with the scaremongering posts, they are fake,in accurate, sometimes dangerous. Most people might roll their eyes and move on, some will share for the sake of being the one with the info but quite a lot will have their anxieties heightened, with an increased feeling of failure or doom if they can't follow all the made up rules.

It's not helping anyone and even worse it's actually harming people.

I've only seen this kind of thing on MN tbh! My FB feed is all sweetness and light - cheery memes, people doing daft stuffwhile stuck in their houses etc. Admittedly a few slightly pleased-with-themselves posts about impressive cooking or homeschooling activities. But no virtue-signalling berating of others.

Shmabel · 29/03/2020 13:37

@user1353245678533567

I'm talking specifically about people who have said that they don't think we should have to socially distance because it causes them distress. In reality, this could range from people who are newly suffering MH issues as a result of the restrictions, to those who have always had MH issues, to those who are simply bored. There's no reliable way for me to determine which. Worth pointing out that plenty of people in each of those categories do think it's important to adhere to the restrictions.

I have no issue with people complaining, venting etc etc. This is a very tough time for so many people; those with MH issues (and those without) deserve support and compassion. I do have an issue with people thinking the lives of others aren't all that important. These posts usually imply that the disruption to our lives is solely in aid of older generations (who presumably they perceive to be less worthwhile).

SmileyClare · 29/03/2020 13:59

All the fake scare mongering shit on fb

Just saw a meme that made me laugh.

And now here on BBC News at 10 we go to a Corona virus expert live for an update. .We've got Debbie off Facebook
