The rise in the hero complex

PrincessConsueIaBananaHammock · 28/03/2020 17:08

There has been a certain rise in people claiming they are or thinking they are heroes. "We are saving lives".

That basically involves an avid desire to report anyone that dares to leave the house, police everyone else, dismiss the worries and concerns of others, ridiculing, attacking, bullying and emotionally blackmailing anyone who struggles, some kind of irrational fear/hate of children and gleeful virtue signaling about how much better they are at staying home. Abusing key workers that in their eyes are not doing their job,for doing their job, following guidelines(made up or official) ,not following guidelines,in the wrong clothes etc.

There are people who are seriously struggling right now, emotionally, financially, mentally, physically etc. People that are becoming more and more vulnerable as more restrictions and public policing come in. People that have killed themselves due to the situation we are in.

They are not heroes, they are not saving lives.

I ate a chocolate bar, and I've left the kids sleeping so I could get some work done.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 01/04/2020 11:29

Today we just went out to a deserted show ground near us and my son stepped in some poop.

THAT’LL TEACH ME.

longearedbat · 01/04/2020 11:57

I have just been reading a thread that descended into talking about whether buying chocolate is a necessity - you know the sort of thing, buying stuff you want but don't actually need means you don't care about the NHS, and you don't care about who you give coronavirus to etc etc. All it has done is make me want chocolate! Now, I have got 2 easter eggs upstairs that I bought the other day. My h is going out to take his father to the doctors, I will be all alone. Will I be able to resist eating one?

GrumpyMug2 · 01/04/2020 11:59

I have been working all morning but about to take my child out for a walk, the most heinous of crimes. Ran out of meat and wine so may chance a shop too.

PrincessConsueIaBananaHammock · 01/04/2020 12:08

Will I be able to resist eating one?

If you want your antihero badge you MUST eat both.Grin

Well I am taking ds to his dads later. I know children of separated parents can do this. The guidelines say they can. I have weighed up the risk. Exh is following guidelines. Theres no additional kids coming and going. No reason for him not go.

Ds has hfa and is homeschooled anyway, so keeping up his routine is important.

However, to certain posters this is a non essential journey and (and I quote)

'people who send their kids to their other parents during this are only doing so because they cant cope being a parent'

But fuck it.....taking my non essential journey is happening anyway.....clearly I cant cope! 🤷‍♀️

Can I join?!

I’ve committed an abomination according to MN and ordered several items of clothing from various retailers, y’know to keep the economy going! (And everywhere has a huge sale on too Grin).
I work for an e-commerce fashion retailer, they’re trying to keep a semblance of normalcy. The warehouse are absolutely adhering to social distancing and going by every rule in regards to sanitising and cleaning - and I’m glad they are. As if the warehouse wasn’t still going and orders still going out there would be no jobs to go back to for those of us that have been furloughed.
It’s on the government, they said we can stay open so nobody is doing anything wrong to order clothes and non-essential items from places that are still open, if people want someone to blame blame the government not the retailer.

Rant over!

But I’m sick of all this virtue signalling about going out/buying neighbours stuff/being a great citizen. Half the rules in place are ones just made up by MN or Chinese whispers!!

isabellerossignol · 01/04/2020 12:38

You ordered clothes? Shock My family are fashioning clothing out of all those old duvet covers in the back of the hotpress because it's far too big a risk to our neighbours to walk across the garden to the garage where our washing machine is, so we've burnt all our clothes after wearing. Anyone who doesn't burn their clothes hates the NHS and wants nurses to die from their selfishness. When my old duvets run out, we'll be naked, but it's just what you have to do if you're a decent person.

TheTruthAboutLove · 01/04/2020 12:55

The sad thing is people in AIBU genuinely believe what you have just wrote Blush It’s embarrassing.

I’m even going out to....wait for it....the supermarket to collect a parcel and some shopping today. I’m expecting the noose to be there when I walk out. I evidently just hate the NHS and want to be in lockdown forever!

I read online about the whole driving thing. And people’s argument that you may have an accident are ridiculous. On average, a driver has an accident once every 17.3 years so for you to have it during a 3 month coronavirus lockdown when there are significantly less cars on the road is ridiculous. It’s sensible to drive your car down the motorway for half an hour to keep the battery ticking over, but it’s idiots putting worst case scenarios in people’s heads that have them doubting themselves. It’s again massively embarrassing.

TheTruthAboutLove · 01/04/2020 13:16

Someone has just posted a photo on a FB Group of a beach car park near my home with about four cars in it. Saying he’s absolutely outraged people are flouting the rules.

I’ve just told him if he’s that outraged he should be contacting the police not posting photos on Facebook so people can argue about driving vs not driving. It’s so boring now, people are outraged for the sake of it.

Blakes77 · 01/04/2020 13:19

Well we have now run out of Easter eggs so I must go outside and buy more. It's OK, I will buy a pint of milk at the same time. If I don't buy more Easter eggs THE EASTER BUNNY WILL DIE.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 01/04/2020 13:50

EXACTLY @isabellerossignol

Thanks for this thread OP

Can I join?

Yesterday, after reading an mn thread, I heard myself asking DH - "we're not allowed to buy chocolate, now?!!"

So again, thank you for restoring sanity

Shitsgettingcrazy · 01/04/2020 15:13

Apparently, recognising that the guidelines dont definitely how often you can go for food

And saying that some mners are making up their own rules, I am advocating people popping out for 'a twix and a hair dye' and something about that ibwoild only care when it's my family member in ICU witha risk of dying.

Just makes me want to switch off.

I am finding this week really bloody hard

PrincessConsueIaBananaHammock · 01/04/2020 15:32

Some non MN approved hill rolling. Definitely not essential or necessary, but it made DD ridiculously happy. I owed her after last night.Grin

MyHipsDontLieUnfortunately · 01/04/2020 15:34

I know a teacher who keeps posting with #keyworker. I mean I'm a teacher too, but I'm doing fuck all compared to another friend who works in a supermarket.

TheTruthAboutLove · 01/04/2020 16:01

I’ve just drove past the primary school in my village, and across the gates there are loads of laminated rainbows that the children have drawn. I have to say, it had me choked up.

Then I go on Facebook and yet another post about someone driving to Asda to get a newspaper alongside their weekly shop and how abhorrent it is.

SmileyClare · 01/04/2020 16:08

Love the hill rolling! Dare you to start an aibu thread Can we go hill rolling? He he. Get your kicks where you can I say.

Sorry you're finding things hard shit I'm trying to take each day as it comes but have moments of thinking Fuck this is our life now and waking up in the night worrying about money. Sympathies BrewCake

Disappointed people aren't attempting to cultivate their own cocoa beans to make home made chocolate. Seen lots of comments today about making your own bread Confused Wont the bread in supermarkets get thrown away if we all start baking it at home in a virtuous fashion? Do some people think they're on the hunger games.

When waiting in the queue outside Tescos yesterday we had a woman marching along the queue shouting Excuse Me I'm a KeyWorker so she could go in the shop first. I mean no one minded her queue jumping, maybe she was rushing to get back to work but all the shouting of KEY WORKER COMING THROUGH seemed a tad dramatic.

Oh well at least I had something to tell Dh about when I got home, we're rapidly running out of conversation. Grin

Cohle · 01/04/2020 16:08

My husband's cancer treatment is at risk of being delayed if our local NHS becomes too overwhelmed. Everyone who stays at home is a hero to me Thanks

If being smug about it on the internet is what helps some people stay at home then it's fine by me.

TheTruthAboutLove · 01/04/2020 16:12

The problem with baking your own bread MN virtue signallers is that flour is the new toilet rolls where I live. You cannot get any, anywhere.

I put it down to children being off school and then adults doing a lot more home baking with them.

SmileyClare · 01/04/2020 16:15

I'm sorry about your husband Cohle That puts my worries into perspective Flowers

Blakes77 · 01/04/2020 16:20

The thing is though, as far as I can tell from my area, pretty much everyone is following the rules. Yes, people are out walking, but they cross the street when they see others. Barely any cars on the road.
This will all help the NHS, and it's a good thing, but there are too many posters on here (I don't do Faceache)who are literally telling people what kind of exercise they are allowed to do, what they can eat and what they can wear, and if they have any objection to that they are actual murderers.
Most people are doing their bit. My finances are fucked. Seiously fucked. My future plans-also fucked. I have 3 old people to take care of, a kid who really needs proper teaching and I am bored and stressed out of my head.
I am doing my bit, but I am not a hero because I have no choice, and my mate going off to drive her ambulance is not a hero either because it's the job she chose.
Everyone needs to calm the fuck down.
Seriously, a lot of threads on here remind me of that Catherine Tate posh woman with the kids. You know, Children! the hummus is not organic! Run for your lives!
I do hope your husbands treatment isn't delayed though Cohle good luck with it.x

PrincessConsueIaBananaHammock · 01/04/2020 16:29

@Cohle fingers crossed. Hope everything goes ahead and runs smoothly. That must be such a worry on top of everything else.

@Blakes77 how old is the kid? I work in primary and while I'm no Mary Poppins and more Lauren Cooper than Sheldon Cooper maybe I can help?

Sorry to hear you're struggling shit . Take it day or week at a time I guess. Looking at the whole period, especially if extended feels way too overwhelming.

PaulHollywoodsSexGut · 01/04/2020 16:50

I was where you are yesterday and this morning @Shitsgettingcrazy

It’s been a week of sharp ups and downs, some of the latter so bad I fear that I’d somehow forget to breathe - I get anxious at times but this is next level random teeny attacks that last only for a few seconds.

What keeps me afloat is being able to work (but that’s hellish atm) and

  • taking the piss out of the neighbourhood stasi
  • my daily walk with three children on board (double buggy, one in the carrier)
  • FlightRadar24
  • listing and planning all the fucking amazeballs stuff we can do when this is all over, namely going to the swings and swimming pool
