Clapping the NHS at 8pm today

I am an NHS worker

To all those of you who voted for the Tory party at the last election, a party that has for a long time tried to destroy the NHS and only realise our worth now that there is a serious pandemic afoot,

and to all of you who were clogging up the beaches, the Lake District, the parks in London etc without a care in the world last weekend

I don’t want to hear your hypocritical clapping out the window for the NHS workers tonight, so PLEASE DON’T

OP posts:

Just had some fireworks and distant clapping and cheering. I hope they are keeping well apart.

SpokeTooSoon · 26/03/2020 20:03

It’s so patronising the way we speak about healthcare workers. It’s a job. Harder than usual at the moment, but a profession they chose to go into. Are we having a quick clap for the bankers and lawyers and business people who pay top rate tax tomorrow night? You know, the people paying for the self-employed bailout? That deserves a round of applause surely.

Notredamn · 26/03/2020 20:03

They're setting banging things against the lampposts here and setting off fireworks.

tessiegirl · 26/03/2020 20:04

Very emotional to hear the clapping in our road

StudentHelp · 26/03/2020 20:04

Everyone was out on my street!

Notredamn · 26/03/2020 20:04

Standing round banging things*

PennyGold · 26/03/2020 20:04

It was fantastic to see!

I work for the NHS and the majority of people in the staff room voted Tory

vera99 · 26/03/2020 20:05

No clapping I could hear here (Welling Kent)

rainbowlou · 26/03/2020 20:06

I’m worried that some people will think it’s an excuse to hang out with the neighbours and have some kind of street party.

Eireni · 26/03/2020 20:06

Yeah I just burst into tears with that. I could hear so many people clapping and whooping. Shouting ‘Thankyou!’ and the lads a few doors down chanting ‘NHS! NHS!’ like a football chant.

We are going to stand together as a nation and pull through this. I hope.

RishiSunakFanClub · 26/03/2020 20:07

Not a whisper of a clap here. All my neighbours must be Tories put off by the OP Smile

MarshaBradyo · 26/03/2020 20:07

Rainbow don’t worry we’ll all legged it back inside after!

Dandarabilla · 26/03/2020 20:07

I am not clapping because I don’t see the point of it. Nothing will change by clapping your hands together. I find it infantile and forced. Anyway, I just had a shower and washed my hair so it would be an inconvenience. Then I will log onto facebook and see all the clapping videos and pics from the smug and virtue signalling.

username108 · 26/03/2020 20:07

Lovely gesture but I cringed like fuck when I heard my neighbour clapping. I'd feel really daft standing by the door clapping.

BeyondMymymymyCorona · 26/03/2020 20:07

Not only clapping here, but fireworks. Ambulances straight to the burns unit is obviously exactly what the Royal Gwent needs right now 🙄

MrsJBaptiste · 26/03/2020 20:07

Well you'd expect MN to have this view.

Loads clapping òn our road and fireworks going off. I thiught it was greatvand very emotional when the radio then played 'We are the Champions' 😓

expatinspain · 26/03/2020 20:08

It's come from Spain and Italy where it's seen as a nice thing to show some appreciation for the health workers and also as a way to bring out a bit of community spirit as we're all cooped up in our houses 24/7. No one thinks it's tacky here, nor do the medical staff feel anything but that's it a small token of people's appreciation. However, I'm not surprised at some of the reactions on here. It's just not a 'British' thing to do.

TheLinerunner · 26/03/2020 20:09

So there's fireworks going off. Ffs.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 26/03/2020 20:10

Yeah MN is cats bum mouth, arms folded, tutting. Yawn.

aliasname · 26/03/2020 20:10

We did it, it was very uplifting. Afterwards I also talked to my teenage daughter about how what the NHS really needed was money and staff, not just clapping. It did make her think, I hope.

forkfun · 26/03/2020 20:11

Well said OP. Respect and a decent salary are a whole lot better than the clap.

MrsCat1 · 26/03/2020 20:11

Our whole street was out. About 70 houses. Very moving. Several NHS workers who have said they felt uplifted by it. And very moving for all involved.

tiredmedic · 26/03/2020 20:12

Just walked outside and with the exception of the people next door and the house next to them, all my neighbours were out clapping. I joined in for my colleagues at work (isolating as I'm getting over covid19 and my wife is mid sickness) and to my embarrassment when they saw me they started cheering. I feel such a f**king fraud, as i can't risk going back for another 10 days. But to everyone who went out to clap, thanks. (blubbing now fgs)
