I am an NHS worker

To all those of you who voted for the Tory party at the last election, a party that has for a long time tried to destroy the NHS and only realise our worth now that there is a serious pandemic afoot,

and to all of you who were clogging up the beaches, the Lake District, the parks in London etc without a care in the world last weekend

I don’t want to hear your hypocritical clapping out the window for the NHS workers tonight, so PLEASE DON’T

Well said OP.

defthand · 26/03/2020 15:36

Fair call indeed.

inwood · 26/03/2020 15:37

I am not an NHS worker but I totally totally agree with you.

definitelygc · 26/03/2020 15:38

Ditto for all of those who complained about the junior doctor strikes.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 26/03/2020 15:38

Does that mean you would rather nobody did it?

Or just those people?

BiBiBirdie · 26/03/2020 15:41

I'm Labour, an activist with family in the NHS. We helped warn what would happen op. I will clap as I think you are all amazing, but agree, anyone who voted for the cuts needs to sit the fuck down

eddiemairswife · 26/03/2020 15:42

It's a bit 1984.

Smellbellina · 26/03/2020 15:43

How is it a bit 1984?

hedwigismyowl · 26/03/2020 15:43

Rather no one did, what's the point of it? Most people are glad for key workers, no matter what job they do. What's the point of clapping for it. Don't get it.

FuzzyLegs · 26/03/2020 15:44

I think it's a weird idea. 50% of the people round here can't even stay in their houses. Neighbour has just got out of her car with lots of shopping bags (not food). Everyone would be better of just concentrating on actually staying at home and not socialising.

Hugglespuffed · 26/03/2020 15:44

I'll be clapping as are most of my street. But I'm in a heavily Labour area.

I think it is a lovely thing that people are doing.

Hugglespuffed · 26/03/2020 15:45

@FuzzyLegs I thought most shops were shut now apart from food or other essential shops?

Bourdic · 26/03/2020 15:46

A lot in my street are doing it - there’s lots of lovely lefties here who never vote Tory, we have a paramedic, some of us ( including me) have DC who are working their sox off at the moment in the NHS. I can’t hug her atm but will clap her ( and others) tonight. Its also a way of us expressing general solidarity towards each other this evening for a few minutes before we go back in to our self isolation . Don’t br cross with us OP - save it for this rotten, stinking, hypocritical Government and their damned supporters

FuzzyLegs · 26/03/2020 15:48

Dunno @Hugglespuffed. There are lots of independent shops around here. She'd been shopping somewhere, with her visitors.

Laaf80 · 26/03/2020 15:49

I agree OP.

I’m not NHS but if I was I’d be thinking what good will a clap do when clappers will whinge about NHS pay rise, too many managers, lazy docs, and god alone what else.

What I would support is a one off payment to all NHS staff. Say 1k each. And a decent pay deal announced in a year or so.

Oh and reinstatement of the bursaries.

Rocketmam · 26/03/2020 15:50

I get that silly pointless things like this make some people feel better about themselves, but it doesn't actually DO anything does it?

Donating some of our spare food to a local charity that is doing house calls, volunteering to actually help the NHS, remembering after all this is over that the wages we pay 'essential workers' is dogshit...all that is forgotten about because why bother? You can just clap your hands in the safety of your own home, at an appointed time.

It's pointless but it annoys me because it ends up being a way for most to just think they've 'done their bit' when they've done fuck all to help.

Same as all that 'be kind' bollocks that was just forgotten the next day.

DameXanaduBramble · 26/03/2020 15:51

I think its so patronising.

Laaf80 · 26/03/2020 15:51

Sorry - when some clappers are usually whinging.

Either way, I suspect most NHS staff will be on shift or too knackered to pop their head out to hear the chorus of claps.

Violetdaffodil · 26/03/2020 15:52

Bourdic of course I’m not cross with everyone who is going to clap tonight, it’s just galling to know there will be a few who’ll be clapping like seals and then voting Tory again.
I’m not that fussed about being clapped to be honest, would just appreciate more protective gear and testing for the staff.

OP posts:
Mrstumb · 26/03/2020 15:52

What about if you are a doctor that voted Tory? I know several nhs workers that voted Tory... I Guess there are other reasons to vote a certain way than the nhs

MrsCat1 · 26/03/2020 15:52

I'll be doing it. To thank the NHS and to show solidarity in a crisis. Of course it's only a small thing but I think it is worth doing.

defthand · 26/03/2020 15:53

I’m sure NHS staff would much prefer adequate PPE to keep themselves, their patients, and their families safe.

goldenorbspider · 26/03/2020 15:53

It's soo cringy. There's a video circulating of Nhs workers walking into a supermarket and the staff are clapping them like they've come from war. Couldn't watch the whole thing it's so awkward

mycatsmellsbad · 26/03/2020 15:54

I find this (the clapping) very patronising and Self indulgent. I picture a lot of people feeling smug afterwards about how nice they’re being then tomorrow take their kids to the park and buy out a shelf of their local supermarket.

The best thank you to give is to heed the guidelines and Help ease the pressure on the nhs.

Peanutbutteryogurt · 26/03/2020 15:56

The whole thing is bizarre, people standing at the window applauding to no one. I very much doubt many people will do this.
