Clapping the NHS at 8pm today

I am an NHS worker

To all those of you who voted for the Tory party at the last election, a party that has for a long time tried to destroy the NHS and only realise our worth now that there is a serious pandemic afoot,

and to all of you who were clogging up the beaches, the Lake District, the parks in London etc without a care in the world last weekend

I don’t want to hear your hypocritical clapping out the window for the NHS workers tonight, so PLEASE DON’T

OP posts:
defthand · 26/03/2020 20:12

It feels too early for this, and somehow wrong.

Our NHS staff did not sign up for a battle, let alone one without armour. If other nations are to go by, 20-30% of them will get infected, and that breaks my heart. I can’t clap knowing that.

Hannah021 · 26/03/2020 20:13

@expatinspain, a lot of lovely ppl clapped, i totally didnt think anyone would... It is only the miserable ones in MN who have issues with showing gratitude and also helping in all possible ways... Hopefully they arent that many hearing the clapping outside

Absentwomen · 26/03/2020 20:13

Striking a similar thread for carers, (although the OP there never mentioned voting preferences) is way down the list.

I'd defy any person to not be aware of how much our NHS teams are battling the unknown, whatever one feels about clapping, the opening post here, was sneering at voting choices. We may well have been reading a different thread had it not been for that element.

turkeyontheplate · 26/03/2020 20:15

OP - we ARE angry about the years of criminal underfunding, the shit pay and conditions, and we are furious and worried about the lack of protective equipment - and basic equipment. It's appalling.

The clapping is just a small gesture of solidarity. We're shut in our homes, there's little else we can do. It's not intended to be patronising. Don't piss all over it Sad

TheLinerunner · 26/03/2020 20:15

What we've got here in my central city area is clapping (nice) and fireworks going off (not nice) and dogs barking hysterically (very not nice, for neither man nor beast). It'll have woken up young DC for sure.

Is this to happen every night?

Notredamn · 26/03/2020 20:15

Brilliant, more patients for the rushed-off-their-feet staff to deal with in a few days, then. All out clapping and whooping and crowding round to set off fireworks. Ffs!

SmileEachDay · 26/03/2020 20:16

I’m a massive not joiner in er.

I joined with my street and it made me weep.

I am doing everything the nhs needs in terms of lockdown.
I’m a teacher, so I’m looking after nhs staff’s children.
My sister is an ITU nurse.

TheReluctantCountess · 26/03/2020 20:17

We didn’t hear any clapping here, but fireworks started a few minutes after eight and are still going.

bananaskinsnomnom · 26/03/2020 20:17

Did it really do any harm? No.

In fact it was nice to say hello to neighbours from a distance who I’ve never really met!

I’ve never voted conservative.
I was always supportive of the Junior Doctor strikes (I have family who are doctors and understood)
I’m an ex cancer patient, without the NHS god knows what would have happened to me and my family.
It was a nice act of solidarity.

skeemee · 26/03/2020 20:19

I’ve just clapped! My whole family did, and most of our neighbours were out too!

Just txt my friend who is a nurse and she is really pleased and surprised her street were doing the same. She appreciated it very much.

We both had a wee blub 😢

Yesterdayforgotten · 26/03/2020 20:20

Well I clapped at my front door and so did most of my neighbours. It made me teary. I'm doing everything asked of me for lock down and following all the rules. I used to work for the NHS and wanted to show my appreciation for such a wonderful healthcare system at this incredibly strained time.

At the end of this, when many health workers are dead and we can all go back to our lives, will you clappers actually do anything constructive and demand actual change for the NHS or will you just think 'well I clapped occasionally - job done'.

Those conservative voters trying to salve their consciences by claiming that Tony Blair did some bad things for the NHS twenty years ago so therefore it was ok to vote Tory in December - seriously, how desperate do you have to be.

TheLinerunner · 26/03/2020 20:21

There's a dog still barking outside going crazy. That's directly because of the fireworks that were let off.

Nothing2doooooo · 26/03/2020 20:23

I don't think it's about it being a British thing or not. For me, I think it's about people believing doing the bare minimum and posting about it makes them better people. I'll bet some of the seal-clappers have passed an obvious NHS worker on the street or have one as a neighbour and have not so much as made eye contact or smiled, let alone mouthed a "thank you" but sure, let's join the bandwagon and step outside with everybody else, while we bang our hands together because govt has told us what to do once again.

It's not so much the clapping as it is doing something you think the other person wants/deserves as opposed to what they actually need. Did the govt even ask NHS workers if they'll like this and what would they prefer? (You know... when you want to do something "nice" for someone, it's better to ask or find out what is "nice" to them). No, we want to clap. NHS workers can like it or lump it. It's our way of showing appreciation and if they don't accept it, then they are being ungrateful.

It's the same as people forwarding messages to 5 friends online and counting it as the good they've done when there is a donate button or link right next to the post that is being forwarded - a link that is rarely used. A button that if used would help to solve the actual problem being passed around with "thoughts and prayers", mind.

Honestly!

Quicklittlenamechange · 26/03/2020 20:23

No one gets it do they .
This isnt for the NHS its for you.
So stand outside, clap for 5 minutes and then go back in feeling all glowing and smug.Hmm
Years of abuse-verbal, physical and abuse of services and now fucking clapping that not one NHS worker wants.
Fucks sake !
Never mind it will give us all a laugh tomorrow

Hannah021 · 26/03/2020 20:24

@SinisterBumFacedCat GrinGrinGrin god u put that image in my heard for MN

SoloSolow · 26/03/2020 20:25

I think it is all so embarrasing.

Just because they started clapping in Italy and Spain, why do people need to do it here?

I have had to shut myself off from the hypocrisy of too many people. Why clap when you queued up inches apart from people to strip supermarket shelves, or went traipsing off to the countryside, beaches and parks spreading COVID-19? Or have barbecue parties like it's a public holiday?

The best way to show support to NHS workers is to obey the rules regarding social distancing and self isolation and stay inside unless you are a key worker.

motherrunner · 26/03/2020 20:26

Fireworks still going off here and my neighbours are in the garden getting drunk and singing. I didn’t go outside as I’m cuddling my son who started showing symptoms today.

Justneedaprivaterant · 26/03/2020 20:28

I'm an a&e nurse and felt very cynical about this. I've not been able to see my kids as the risk is to great and I thought a couple people clapping would just piss me off.
However it was so loud in my street. I went outside and had to join in. I felt very proud and emotional. Had a few personal thank yous from neighbours and I just felt a great sense of community spirit and togetherness

squid4 · 26/03/2020 20:28

Well that made me a bit teary. So many people.

Still agree with the OP though! Very non-tory area around here & neighbours have always been v supportive long before all this

Justneedaprivaterant · 26/03/2020 20:30

Personal as in shouting across. Everyone was keeping thier distance and staying at their doors (before anyone jumps on that)

Absentwomen · 26/03/2020 20:34

@SoloSolow

Succinctly put and true.

Now we are hearing of fireworks going off, people in the streets drinking and cheering.....

LemonGingerCakes · 26/03/2020 20:40

Watch out @Violetdaffodil my thread saying the same thing was deleted within seconds for ‘not being in the spirit of the sight'. NHS workers need a pay rise and safer working conditions not stupid clapping.
