Clapping the NHS at 8pm today

Violetdaffodil · 26/03/2020 15:35

I am an NHS worker

To all those of you who voted for the Tory party at the last election, a party that has for a long time tried to destroy the NHS and only realise our worth now that there is a serious pandemic afoot,

and to all of you who were clogging up the beaches, the Lake District, the parks in London etc without a care in the world last weekend

I don’t want to hear your hypocritical clapping out the window for the NHS workers tonight, so PLEASE DON’T

This is exactly the attitude we need at a time like this Hmm it's about showing gratitude for hard working people, that is something everyone should do regardless of their political views. For a start, I highly doubt there was a single person who voted Tory that did so thinking 'I'm doing this because it'll fuck the NHS!'

What about the people who work for the NHS who voted Tory? Should they sit the fuck down?

It doesn't matter which political party is in power, they'll never satisfy everyone - there's no guarantee that Labour would have done any better, they certainly weren't a shining beacon of political brilliance last time around.

Icantbelieveitsnotnutter · 26/03/2020 15:59

I couldn't agree more OP.

Mrstumb · 26/03/2020 16:00

So if you found out a patient you were treating voted Tory would you treat them differently? It does seem slightly judgemental. “You can’t thank me because of your political views”

Violetdaffodil · 26/03/2020 16:03

Mrstumb I won’t accept your thanks because you are patronising and a HYPOCRITE

OP posts:
JustMySize · 26/03/2020 16:03

Well said OP.

We are staying home, only going out when absolutely necessary.

I have NEVER voted conservative, he first four letters are what they are.

They have ruined the NHS, it is only people like you who are trying to save the people of this country.

Thank you Violetdaffodil and all your colleagues.

Violetdaffodil · 26/03/2020 16:04

I’m assuming you’re a Tory voter Mrstumb
Correct me if I’m wrong

OP posts:
Cissyandflora · 26/03/2020 16:04

Totally agree with you. And thanks so much for your hard work, sacrifice and dedication.

Bourdic · 26/03/2020 16:05

It’s possible to do the clapping AND donate to food banks, volunteer, join a march to protect our NHS and so on, they’re not either/ors.

Mrstumb · 26/03/2020 16:06

But I never said I voted Tory? I just don’t agree with your attitude. There’s bigger things to worry about here than politics.

ashmts · 26/03/2020 16:06

I completely agree, I feel very uncomfortable with this whole thing but I couldn't really put my finger on why. It is patronising and hypocritical. I don't want applause, I want PPE and my colleagues to be safe. I'm not brave. Believe me, if I had any choice I'd be at home self-isolating.

It's like the 'NHS you got this' stuff going about. We do not.

StormyClouds · 26/03/2020 16:06

There haven't been any cuts to the NHS @BiBiBirdie. The budget has increased by more than £40 billion since the tories came to power (I'm not a tory voter btw).

The issue the NHS has is its gross inefficiency. I couldn't believe this figure when I heard it, but it is true- only 10% of NHS staff are involved in clinical care. That is why we have the lowest number of ICU beds in Europe- too much bureaucracy.

eddiemairswife · 26/03/2020 16:06

smellbellina the daily two-minutes hate.

PNomintrude · 26/03/2020 16:07

I think it’s a really cringey idea. What is the point?? Pay rises and decent conditions for NHS workers, not trying to create some sort of cheesy film scene with doctors and nurses walking the streets in slow motion to the sound of rapturous applause Blush.

madcatladyforever · 26/03/2020 16:11

We're British, I'll die if my neighbours come out and clap.

StealthPolarBear · 26/03/2020 16:12

I do not agree there are bigger things to worry about than politics.
I agree there are bigger things to worry about than scoring political points.
But politics is responsible in a large way for our health, our healthcare, our happiness, our wealth and our wellbeing and the inequalities in our society , and I think the current situation is highlighting that.

Lottapianos · 26/03/2020 16:12

I'm an NHS worker and I think its utter cringe too. It's nice to know that people are grateful and appreciate the long hard days and nights that clinical staff are currently working, but an actual round of applause is just so cheesy. The people I have seen making the biggest fuss about it on social media are the people who take any opportunity for a smugfest and love showing off about how marvellous they are

Mrstumb · 26/03/2020 16:12

And I think there’s a lot of Tory hate that is really not needed. This situation we find ourselves in is unlike any other situation! Every single country is having a hard time. Every country needs more staff, more beds, more help, more ppe. It hasn’t been easy for any country. I ask myself where would we be if Labour were in charge and I’m not completely sure we would be all that different.

babybunny123 · 26/03/2020 16:16

who the hell thought of this in the first place, totally cringe worthy. I appreciate the fantastic work they do, there is nothing else like the NHS in the whole world but i would not stand clapping on my doorstep.

babbi · 26/03/2020 16:17

Exactly @Rocketmam.... and others with similar views ...
Don’t clap and go back indoors as if you’ve done something 🤷‍♀️... it’s meaningless and patronising-
Seriously do something useful like volunteer if you can .. and everyone without exception should be lobbying their MPs , writing to local government etc all authority and demanding that things change for our Health care ...
That’s what we should be spending our time doing ...and continue to do after this crisis ...

policeandthieves · 26/03/2020 16:18

The clapping is awful
Just be nice when you see your dr/nurse/paramedic/physio etc next time
This is the job - all the hero talk is toe curling
Yes I am frontline NHS before anyone asks

Marieo · 26/03/2020 16:22

Those Labour PFIs are pretty crippling as well. I am not a Tory supporter, but there has been a lot of mismanagement of the NHS, the fact that only now is procurement being centralised, is one example of how inefficient it is and a black hole for money. Nothing to do with the staff who do amazing work without the right tools and in harsh conditions of understaffing, but whatever government gets in next needs to unpick it and start again. Remember that the staff are the most important asset, including support staff who are given the training and support to provide the best equipment and conditions for those who work in it. Underfunding by itself isn't the issue, there's lots 'wrong' with it. Taking away bursaries and the diploma was another level of stupidity though. Personally I won't be clapping as I'll no doubt by rocking DS to sleep, but I have donated to the local hospital charity who are buying bits and bobs to make the nurses a bit more comfortable (toiletries chocolate, radios etc) for on shift, and to help out as the volunteer programme. I live rurally so failing to see a real link between clapping and showing support, but I am guessing it's just not a very British thing which is why I don't get it. The best thing people can do it follow guidance, be kind and don't buy all the bloody food and bog roll.

TheShapeJaper · 26/03/2020 16:25

I think it’s tacky

WorraLiberty · 26/03/2020 16:26

It'd be a stupid thing to do in my street and in many others, where the front doors are right next to each other, in the same porch way.

LadyLindaT · 26/03/2020 16:27

We won't hear the clapping.
It will be muffled through all that stockpiled toilet paper.

needsahouseboy · 26/03/2020 16:28

I'm NHS and I think it is a naff idea. There are so many people right now that are working hard e.g. teachers, bin men, shop assistants etc to enable the NHS to continue working, that just clapping the NHS feels so wrong.
