Clapping the NHS at 8pm today

I am an NHS worker

To all those of you who voted for the Tory party at the last election, a party that has for a long time tried to destroy the NHS and only realise our worth now that there is a serious pandemic afoot,

and to all of you who were clogging up the beaches, the Lake District, the parks in London etc without a care in the world last weekend

I don’t want to hear your hypocritical clapping out the window for the NHS workers tonight, so PLEASE DON’T

OP posts:
Stellaris22 · 26/03/2020 21:23

Not criticising, it's a lovely gesture and hearing that it's boosted spirits is really wonderful to hear.

Just wondering where this gratitude was when NHS staff were pleading for people to not empty supermarket shelves.

firstimemamma · 26/03/2020 21:26

@Justneedaprivaterant I'm glad you appreciated it but my nhs paramedic fiancé really didn't enjoy it and neither did any of his colleagues.

Hippydoodledoo8 · 26/03/2020 21:29

@Stellaris22 I’ve called people out on here before for stockpiling, didn’t condone it at all.

Doesn’t mean the rest of us are hypocrites.

autumntimebrowns · 26/03/2020 21:31

Well I must confess I thought it was a bit of a daft idea. But actually it was very moving.

I can't magic up equipment.

But I can hope that a little bit of community coming together means that tomorrow we'll stay a bit further apart. X

Justneedaprivaterant · 26/03/2020 21:35

@firstimemamma that's fair enough. Like I said in a previous post I was very cynical to about it earlier in the day. Just didn't want people to be put off from doing it or feel bad because others are saying it's patronising.
Anyway respect to your fiance. I work closely with WAST and understand the pressure their under aswell

sqirrelfriends · 26/03/2020 21:35

I'm really annoyed now, "friends" of mine who continue to go about their lives as normal because "it only affects old people" have been going on and on on social media about how moved they were.

Well, if you were that concerned then keep your ass at home! IMO it's great to appreciate the NHS but don't pretend to care for likes.

Justneedaprivaterant · 26/03/2020 21:36

They're* wish there was an edit button

Eireni · 26/03/2020 21:41

I think they’re doing this daily in Spanish cities?

Maybe we’ll go weekly here......I don’t think us Brits could cope with this communal emotion on a daily basis

supercee · 26/03/2020 21:44

Well said @Rainbowunicat

expatinspain · 26/03/2020 21:50

Eireni Yes, every day here. It’s less emotional and more upbeat now. People banging pots and pans, instruments playing, car horns honking and clapping etc.

ScarlettBlaize · 26/03/2020 21:51

Thank you for saying this. I pointed the same thing out on another thread and am getting excoriated for it. People love a bit of virtue signalling, especially when it costs them absolutely nothing (in any sense).

ScarlettBlaize · 26/03/2020 21:52

@LemonGingerCakes I agree with you but it's not the Mumsnet Majority Permitted Opinion (TM) so we will get ripped to shreds.

midwestspring · 26/03/2020 21:53

Honestly I thought this as well.
Sentimental clap trap.
But I am feeling quite grouchy today!

loobyloo1234 · 26/03/2020 21:55

Wish there was a poll. Wish this was on AIBU. Because YANBU. Sanctimonious shite from anyone that clapped yet voted Tory

Keep going OP

ScarlettBlaize · 26/03/2020 21:59

I feel the need to add that Jeremy Corbyn is an antisemitic piece of shit, and Boris Johnson is a lying amoral corrupt piece of shit. For balance.

ScarlettBlaize · 26/03/2020 22:03

(For avoidance of doubt: Jeremy Corbyn is also an amoral liar, and Boris Johnson is also a massive racist. We're fucked.)

ChickLitLover · 26/03/2020 22:14

It was just a sign of gratitude, it’s all we can do right now.

How can any of you criticise that?

Quite easily. It doesn’t help. The things you can do are stay home, follow the rules, donate or volunteer if you’re young and healthy enough.

All this, ‘it’s all we can do rubbish’, you don’t need need to do anything else, it’s not about you. People are always so desperate to make themselves relevant in situations. And put it on Facebook of course.

I know people that are still meeting friends, still having family round to visit etc.... then they’re out clapping. I just feel like telling them to fuck off. I’ve followed all advice but apparently some people think I’m mean because I didn’t fucking clap.

fascinated · 26/03/2020 22:17

The three people who have mentioned it to me and made a fuss on social media are all private school parents.

Make of that what you will!

Mintypylonsfryingsurplus · 26/03/2020 22:20

Prince Charles tested
No tests for NHS staff
Footballers etc tested
No NHS tests
Stockpiling pure greed
No slots for NHS workers
Pay rises for others
NHS using food banks

What is needed is obvious, bursaries, free parking, creches, key housing, equipment and respect.
More sickening is the total self adulation 20.01pm on fb ( which I have now deactivated!)
Oh I so great I clapped!! But I off tomoz on my hike as soz need to get out.

Are people sheep?
Its like people need to get mass emotion!!
Its not the clapping I really object to but the attention seeking around this.
Never in all my life have I seen so much self adulation on social media, one bright spark actually set up a group to make it a weekly event 🤢
I am glad people are making changes but dont think giving a homeless person a banana tgats been in your gandbag for 3 days puts you up there with Mother Theresa of Calcutta.
I am so grateful for all the key workers but I dont want to feel less than because I dont parade my emotions around in a hypocritical display of narcissism.
But thank you all.

supercee · 26/03/2020 22:26

@ChickLitLover you can do all those things you listed (which everyone should be doing) to help.

And still clap.

supercee · 26/03/2020 22:28

It's just an acknowledgement, pure and simple. My NHS worker pals loved it and were grateful that people were acknowledging them.

There will always be people trying to piss on the parade and make it in to something that's it's not.

WearyandBleary · 26/03/2020 22:34

DH and I both NHS workers and he is moving out this weekend to protect us while he continues to work with frontline staff. We just drank and cried and cried. We are broken.

ScarlettBlaize · 26/03/2020 22:39

@WearyandBleary I'm sorry. That's awful.

ScarlettBlaize · 26/03/2020 22:40

@supercee no, it's people convincing themselves they've done something meaningful to help when they've done fuck all.

PotholeParadise · 26/03/2020 22:40

Fireworks? There were fireworks?

I'm sure A&E departments will feel very supported when people come in with firework-related injuries.
