Police are pulling over loads of cars in my local town

Stopping people and asking them where they’re going, is it essential, etc. Glad they’re taking it seriously.

And not local to me, but saw this “ticket” on fb. So police saying you can’t drive somewhere to exercise. I know that was being discussed earlier.

Policing by consent is a fine principle and I'd rather hope we hang onto it

Indeed !

Flaxmeadow · 26/03/2020 14:39

I have a massive garden, pool and tennis court. I live next to common land. I have zero reason to drive anywhere. Some people do not have this luxury. They live in high density urban apartments. There is nowhere to 'walk' or 'run' that is isolated. The government has very clearly said to use common sense. I have heard several people in power saying that for some people, driving to a nearby open space would indeed be more sensible that navigating crowded urban areas. But hey, you know better than them, huh?

The pedestrian areas in towns and cities are fairly deserted. There is plenty of space for city/town high density urban dwellers to walk. It's eerie in the centres now, very different but in a strange way not at all unpleasant to walk around .

It's the amount of non essential cars on the roads that is still a problem. This is why the police are stopping cars and closing off nearby local woods, beauty spots etc. Some large parks have been closed off completely and concrete blocks placed on roads leading to them

mencken · 26/03/2020 14:40

as noted upthread, this situation is a paradise for scum with all the empty premises and that needs to be stopped. You'll be quick to blubber if it happens to you.

do as you are bloody told. You do not want to get this disease as you have a high chance of a nasty death from it. You've got water, sanitation and food (although the latter is trickier). Be grateful.

CandlesBlanketsandTea · 26/03/2020 14:44

I'm getting really irritated the more people that think they are special. The more people who break the rules the longer lockdown will last and at this rate they'll clamp down further on any outdoor time. As someone who lives in a flat the thought of more restrictions on going out are terrifying. So for those of you on this thread who think they are so special can you think of those of us who don't have a garden and might be trapped inside for the whole summer. Just follow the bloody rules you could save lives doing it, stop being so selfish and get a grip.

TrainspottingWelsh · 26/03/2020 14:44

damn exactly. There's a woman and child walking along the footpath behind my land. I don't recognise them and it's impossible they've walked from the town. Should I be marching across my acres to abuse them for being irresponsible? Perhaps I should take one of the ponies with me whilst I lecture the woman on how she should be amusing her dc at home.

I can understand it in tourist hot spots or picturesque places attracting large numbers. But if the highlight of someone's day is dodging cow pats and letting their dc watch some horses in a field where nobody else is in sight, let alone near, who the fuck am I to judge them?

crapette · 26/03/2020 14:46

Here in France the restrictions have been tightened up so that you can only take exercise within 1km of your home address. Cycling for exercise is now banned.

We have to carry a form every time we leave the house. It's a new form for every journey. No writing in pencil and no crossing out the date to re-use it. The form has now been updated to include the time you left home so police can easily tell if you have been out too long. They will also check your supermarket receipt, so you can't just keep a random bag of "decoy" shopping in the car.

135 euro fine if you aren't complying.

Sadly, there are already scummy bastards pretending to be Gendarmes who are stopping people and fining them cash on the spot.

kirinm · 26/03/2020 14:46

Where does it say we can't drive to go somewhere quiet. Please point me in the direction of the streets that are deserted? Because that isn't the case in my part of London. I tried walking to the park but there are groups of teenagers hanging around and large families who don't move or understand the 2m rule. I felt uncomfortable being out full stop so the only sensible option was to drive somewhere that DID have the space to avoid other people.

Barbie222 · 26/03/2020 14:46

I think this is a good idea if everyone has unimaginatively driven to the same beauty spot.

StormyClouds · 26/03/2020 14:48

^You certainly have a bee in your bonnet about the police StormyClouds
Why? Are you a criminal?^

This is a very dangerous attitude and it is exactly how authoritarian regimes take hold.

Human rights and civil liberties are the concern of everyone- not just criminals!

This is how the Nazis came to power- by demonising and 'othering' sections of society and telling people they had nothing to be concerned about as these people didn't deserve rights.

I just find it quite extraordinary that the police cannot attend burglaries or robberies but now seemingly have the resources to monitor where people are walking.

JellyfishandShells · 26/03/2020 14:48

You do not want to get this disease as you have a high chance of a nasty death from it

Not a nice illness , and there are many unfortunate deaths, but the mortality rate on confirmed cases , let alone on unconfirmed cases is not high. Most of those who get it do not need to seek treatment, nor will they die of it. Exaggeration and scaremongering like that is not helpful.

Verb3naSantos · 26/03/2020 14:49

Zero police in my area. Loads of bikes out in my area causing lorry drivers to slow down. We cycle but no way would I be letting my family cycle at the moment. Pavements pretty full. Will be going for the odd very short drive for exercise until told otherwise. So far we haven’t. Cycling far more dangerous than a 2 min drive to a less deserted area.

Hood people are sticking to their nearest shop.Hmm

Verb3naSantos · 26/03/2020 14:50

Hope.

HeIenaDove · 26/03/2020 14:51

Candles my flat gets very hot in the summer. Always a good couple of degrees hotter than it is outside. Dreading it but needs must. Its a small one bedroom flat We dont have greenery. We have a car park but we do have two small fields on either side just five min walk away.

When i have been out every single person who has tried to come within 2 m of me and not observed social distancing has been a man.

IME women dont seem to have trouble observing it.

RufustheLanglovingreindeer · 26/03/2020 14:51

No, it's Avon And Somerset Police

Thanks 😀

Eyes not what they were and crap zoom on my ipad

MiracletoCome · 26/03/2020 14:52

Not every police force then, no sign of any police in our small town when I went to Waitrose today, there is nowhere near where I live that you would want to go for a jolly anyway.

Probably just the more popular nice areas

BambooSurprise · 26/03/2020 14:54

Probably just the more popular nice areas

Me too - I suspect these are the better known beauty spots.

Here in the midlands where we just have endless fields of mud, there are no police to be seen Grin

MiracletoCome · 26/03/2020 14:55

I'm in the East Midlands...

BambooSurprise · 26/03/2020 14:55

Ha! Snap!

Verb3naSantos · 26/03/2020 14:55

No we’re n a beautiful area. Not a sausage. Far more important things to do as nobody has said you can’t drive a short distance to exercise if safer. Quite the reverse.

MrsNoah2020 · 26/03/2020 15:02

It’s been banned in Spain from the start of the lockdown, the only exception being people can take the dog out within 50m of their home to do the necessary

Fine, but it's much less clear here, given the "you can go out to exercise once a day" rule. Lots of people - me included - are happy to comply with the rules but are confused as to what they are.. As far as I understand it from this thread, the UK rules let you run a marathon from your front door, but not drive 500m to a park even if disabled.

TrainspottingWelsh · 26/03/2020 15:02

Ah yes stormy the police breaking up large gatherings is exactly the same as the third reich. It's ok to demand people sacrifice their livelihoods but god forbid anyone prevents the essential need to visit tourist hotspots.

Doggybiccys · 26/03/2020 15:03

@CandlesBlanketsandTea....me too!!! All these special cases that the rules don't apply because of A, B and C. Unless you live in a shoe box, it is possible to exercise in the house too. Star jumps, run up and down the stairs, skipping ropes, dance, chair aerobics, yoga - lots of free online stuff on youtube. Posters "who don't understand" why people can't drive to an open space to exercise despite the umpteen posts on here explaining why this is selfish, dangerous and not to be done.

Yes, some dogs are boisterous and need a good walk but who is going to walk the dog if you are dead or on a ventilator. If you live in a house where you cannot easily access exercise for a boisterous animal, then maybe you should not have got that animal in the first place.

In a few weeks we will not be having these sorts of threads as most of us will know of someone who has died or is gravely ill - family, friend, neighbour, colleauge, DC friend's parent etc. Maybe then people will understand why these restrictions were necessary.

Parker231 · 26/03/2020 15:06

In Italy you can only exercise within 300m of your home and there was a report today that they may stop all outside exercise.

Flaxmeadow · 26/03/2020 15:06

I tried walking to the park but there are groups of teenagers hanging around and large families who don't move or understand the 2m rule. I felt uncomfortable being out full stop so the only sensible option was to drive somewhere that DID have the space to avoid other people.

The teenagers here are starting to be dealt with by the police, because no one is supposed to congregate in groups of more than 2 people. Also the 2 metre rule is being strictly enforced by supermarkets and outside them

We will probably be going the same way as other European countries soon. With time limits outside and carrying papers, as well as limits on the distance you can walk from your home. Its 50m in Spain ATM

Inkpaperstars · 26/03/2020 15:06

space for city/town high density urban dwellers to walk. It's eerie in the centres now, very different but in a strange way not at all unpleasant to walk around .

Living in zone 2/3 borders I am not finding it deserted, haven't been out for a walk today or yesterday but can see many people doing so and it wouldn't be easy to be two metres at all times. In the centre it is quieter I gather, but people would have to drive or get public transport to go there. Right now the City centres and the countryside may both be a lot emptier than the spaces in between.
