Police are pulling over loads of cars in my local town

Stopping people and asking them where they’re going, is it essential, etc. Glad they’re taking it seriously.

And not local to me, but saw this “ticket” on fb. So police saying you can’t drive somewhere to exercise. I know that was being discussed earlier.

I agree that allowing Cheltenham festival to go ahead has contributed in much to pass on the virus. You don’t need to know someone who was at Cheltenham that week, in the same way you don’t need to know someone who was skiing in north Italy at the half term.

adaline · 28/03/2020 16:51

We are very likely seeing the results of Cheltenham now.

And Crufts. Neither should have gone ahead.

UghNotThisAgain36 · 28/03/2020 16:59

I wish they were pulling more people over in my town. Today, while walking with my children at our local green area (observing all social distancing, the area is 200m from our home, our only period of outside exercise today), we saw an elderly couple parked up in their car with the windows wide open drinking tea out of china cups.

Clearly not a necessary journey by any stretch of the imagination.

More clarity is required about the necessary journey/exercise thing. In the meantime, mugs like me obey the rules. Its the ones that don't do as directed that'll be all smug and 'well, I carried on as normal and I didn't catch it!' after all this is over.

Conrad79 · 28/03/2020 17:18

UghNotThisAgain36 in my area - you would have been targeted by a police officer for merely going for a walk as per your daily allotted exercise with your kids - it’s such a shame.

They’re targeting families with kids and aggressively telling off the parents for walking (locally - no car)

Problem is - this will make the kids fear the police and that’s not good Sad

It’s a shame they don’t understand the government guidelines tbh. Very disappointing.

Hopefully it’s just my local police force Sad

Conrad79 · 28/03/2020 17:20

And they’re taking photos and publicly shaming people for exercising online Sad

MarieG10 · 28/03/2020 17:21

@YouStupidBoy

The government regulations do not permit you to drive your vehicle to exercise at this location

Unfortunately some local police forces are significantly over reaching the law. What their notice says is correct in that the regulations don't permit it...actually what they don't do is NOT to allow it which is more relevant, especially if tested in court which it will be when some local officer attempts to arrest someone and they then find themselves subject to scrutiny of a court, probably more because the person arrested sues for unlawful arrest rather than being charged, because there isn't an offence to charge them with.

Having ready the Coronavirus act I can't find anything that makes it specifically unlawful and have already seen a government minister acknowledging digging an allotment as exercise and driving there etc....

Whether it is wise to do so is another issue. For some people that live in very built up areas then it probably does make sense as it keeps more social distance space

From what I understand the National Police Chiefs Council is already fed up with how some forces have interpreted this and over reached. This legislation is designed for compliance by consent except for flagrant breaches

1forsorrow · 28/03/2020 17:24

we saw an elderly couple parked up in their car with the windows wide open drinking tea out of china cups. I don't know what the china cups have got to do with anything but regards the rest, my husband is disabled, walking is painful but he needs to keep moving and I take drinks with us as he will need to sit for a while, top up his painkillers before we head home. I'm sure that will infuriate you but at least we don't use china cups.

NewYearNewJob123 · 28/03/2020 17:28

Alsohuman: Okay, people should stop repeating something someone being interviewed says on TV or radio as fact, and instead check first before spreading it.

As most people would 🙄

UghNotThisAgain36 · 28/03/2020 17:33

The china cups is not the point. It was just a description,

@1forsorrow The point was that it was an unnecessary journey that should have never been undertaken. They should have been pulled over and sent home. Driving for exercise (or drinking hot beverage) is not one of the four permitted conditions to be out of the house. Not least when the occupants of this car were elderly, presumably vulnerable as they had a disabled badge (didn't mention before so as not to be discriminatory), and were carrying out an activity that could be done at home.

twinnywinny14 · 28/03/2020 17:40

People are unbelievably good at trying to justify their actions when they can’t follow the advice given. They feel their ‘need’ to do things is far more important than following government advice and doing as they’ve been told. It’s not difficult or complicated, stay at home. If you need to go to work, go to work and come home again. If you need food go to the nearest supermarket buy enough that means you don’t need to go again for a while and go home again. If you need medicines or dr, go straight there and then go home again. Any other reason is not necessary and should not be done. Driving unnecessarily is irresponsible and not what you have been asked to do. Not sure if people are actually stupid or just arseholes

user1353245678533567 · 28/03/2020 17:43

It doesn't specify driving for exercise or driving to the shops or driving to care for a vulnerable person or driving to work. It just says exceptions to staying at home are for exercise, for shopping, to care for a vulnerable person or working.

twinnywinny14 · 28/03/2020 17:44

@VivaLeBeaver option 1 may seem the lowest risk from covid 19 but it’s about other things here, eg it’s not the safest option if you have a car accident and need help from the already stretched emergency services. It is an unnecessary journey which we have all been told to avoid. Walk your dog from your house, move out of the way of others or go at quieter times, it’s not difficult you just don’t want to do it because you would rather go where you want to go.

Tonyaster · 28/03/2020 17:52

You can drive to shop and look after animals, so driving for exercise is fine, and allowed. You can drive 2k from your house for exercise even in italy

1forsorrow · 28/03/2020 17:52

UghNotThisAgain maybe leave the police to deal with it, maybe they had been pulled over and explained their situation and the police were happy with it.

EatDessertFirst · 28/03/2020 17:59

If that is the case @1forsorrow then a lot more people will die. Its that simple. Stay at home with the exception of the four given conditions to be out. Its not hard and noone is exempt however much they justify it.

LittleRootie · 28/03/2020 18:09

Stay at home with the exception of the four given conditions to be out

And as exercise is one of those conditions then driving to a place to exercise is not going against the rules.

Conrad79 · 28/03/2020 18:44

I have lost all respect for our local police. FB shaming more innocent people for running alone this afternoon & standing too close to a mother of a young family going for their “daily walk” near their home. The mother asked “can you stand back a bit? We don’t know if you have coronavirus or not!” and they told her off aggressively.

It’s fucked up.

Police are obviously immune to social distancing rules

Alsohuman · 28/03/2020 18:46

As most people would

Of course they would. Jesus, some people could have an argument in an empty room.

OntheWaves40 · 28/03/2020 18:50

This is very worrying

Reginabambina · 28/03/2020 18:57

@LimitIsUp in Milgram’s initial experiment most people obeyed order even though they thought they were harming others as a result.

Alsohuman · 28/03/2020 19:04

From the BBC website:

The government has urged people not to move house to try to limit the spread of coronavirus across the UK.

Buyers and renters should delay moving while emergency stay-at-home measures are in place, it said.

Its comments come amid reports banks are pressing for a full suspension of the UK housing market.

Lenders are concerned about the effect of the pandemic on valuations, according to the Financial Times.

Banks are also worried about granting mortgages during this period of extreme economic uncertainty, the FT said.
The government said that while there "is no need to pull out of transactions", "we all need to ensure we are following guidance to stay at home and away from others at all times".

If a property is vacant, people can continue with the transaction, although they must ensure they are following guidelines with regards to home removals.

But if the house is occupied "we encourage all parties to do all they can to amicably agree alternative dates to move".

NewYearNewJob123 · 28/03/2020 19:17

Alsohuman.

People responded to you cutting and pasting at 13.12.

"The list allows people to move house for example where reasonable" and you said "no it doesn't, this was stopped yesterday".

People pointed out no, not stopped, you should delay if possible but "no need to pull out of transactions" and you claimed people were trying to start an argument.

Now you've posted exactly that. Delay if possible, no need to pull out of transactions.

But you don't think that goes against your post at 13.12 saying "house moves where reasonable" had been "stopped yesterday".

A hell of a lot of posters here are on the wind up.

I drive less than 5 minutes so my autistic DS can have a run around the local woods. It will be really hard for me if I can no longer do this. Yes, we could walk there, but the pavements aren't that empty and it's difficult to maintain distance.

He can also be pretty difficult to direct when walking and sometimes tries to bolt.

I really wish the people who have it easier wouldn't push the boundaries as stricter rules will make it that much harder for those of us who are walking on eggshells during this time.

Alsohuman · 28/03/2020 19:43

You seem incredibly invested in me @NewYearNewJob123. Why? Go and find someone else to pick on. Ideally one who gives a fuck.

Conrad79 · 28/03/2020 19:47

Alsohuman your last post is the definition you giving a fuck though!! D’oh
