Police are pulling over loads of cars in my local town

Stopping people and asking them where they’re going, is it essential, etc. Glad they’re taking it seriously.

And not local to me, but saw this “ticket” on fb. So police saying you can’t drive somewhere to exercise. I know that was being discussed earlier.

I'm not intending to leave the house unless I have to. I live by the coast and I know from a friend that the promenade is busy with tourists/second homers.

I have a little garden to sit in and a hallway I can walk up and down in, that will do until I need to leave for something. I know some people don't have outdoor space or much room, or the'r partners/kids are driving them crazy ad they need to get out for a while, but some people are attempting to enjoy an early summer holiday and these are the twats who will end up infecting people and/or dragging this whole thing on for months longer than necessary.

MrsNoah2020 · 26/03/2020 15:07

If you live in a house where you cannot easily access exercise for a boisterous animal, then maybe you should not have got that animal in the first place

You don't think people should have bought active dogs, because they should have anticipated a never-before-seen pandemic lockdown. Mm, Ok Hmm

LifeImplosionImminent · 26/03/2020 15:12

@grannycake Cos yeah, they're going to pay for someone doing an activity expressly forbidden by the government. Because they are altruistic like that...

Cattenberg · 26/03/2020 15:13

I live in Somerset and I didn’t know this. Not that I can drive, anyway. I hate walking around my town as most people have been making zero effort to observe the two metre rule. I last went for a walk on Sunday and spent the whole time trying to dodge people. Due to this, I haven’t gone out since. Luckily, I can run around the garden and do star jumps.

Wiltshire90 · 26/03/2020 15:13

@StormyClouds we attend every burglary and robbery report that comes in. I've no idea where you have that information from or why you are intent on spouting it all over this thread. I'm sorry if you've had a had a bad experience with your police force, but your attitude is completely unnecessary and your views designed to scaremonger and spread false information. You're being completely counterproductive in an already fragile time.

mindproject · 26/03/2020 15:16

The police didn't attend my burglary.

I think this seems like a total waste of police time. People aren't necessary going to be honest about where they're going. Why should they be? It's nobody else's business.

Flaxmeadow · 26/03/2020 15:17

Living in zone 2/3 borders I am not finding it deserted, haven't been out for a walk today or yesterday but can see many people doing so and it wouldn't be easy to be two metres at all times. In the centre it is quieter I gather, but people would have to drive or get public transport to go there. Right now the City centres and the countryside may both be a lot emptier than the spaces in between.

I live in a very high density area too. I know by social media posts, some people in flats are not using the lifts anymore and walking up and down the stairs when they go out. Partly because of the risk from lift buttons and being in a confined space but also for extra exercise. Not everyone can use the stairs of course, but i suppose it will help all the residents if some do.

We will probably see something like the 50m from your door and time limits outside soon, as in other European countries, which will reduce the amount of people outside at any one time

grannycake · 26/03/2020 15:20

posterLifeImplosionImminent You obviously don't understand how insurance works. I repeat it's not helpful when people say things online that are not true - if you have proof quote your source. Otherwise say that in your opinion insurance companies shouldn't pay. You are entitled to have an opinion but what you are doing is scaremongering and you need to stop

wanderings · 26/03/2020 15:21

I just find it quite extraordinary that the police cannot attend burglaries or robberies but now seemingly have the resources to monitor where people are walking.
Indeed, as police numbers are so thin on the ground, and they must be busy dealing with burgled business premises, and teenagers spitting at elderly people.

Doggybiccys · 26/03/2020 15:24

@MrsNoah2020....You don't think people should have bought active dogs, because they should have anticipated a never-before-seen pandemic lockdown. Mm, Ok hmm

Of course not but its not rocket science. When buying a pet such as big dog, people should anticipate things like being ill with all the usual colds and bugs and not being able to get out much, perhaps having a broken bone or surgery, wild weather etc. Its like saying "I need to get out with my dog as I live in a flat and he needs exercise". Why have a "boisterous" dog if you do not have a garden it can run around in/fetch a ball etc. to burn off energy? I suppose the selfishness of people who do that to dogs is the same selfishness that causes them to flout the rules around what is essential.

Waspie · 26/03/2020 15:26

I had a group of ramblers park up on my drive yesterday (because the car park they would usually use has been closed by the council) adjust their rucksacks and walking boots and ramble off for 2 hours Angry

All of them over 60 and some of them parked on my fucking drive!

Honestly, I swear 90% of people are as thick as pig poo Sad

Smellbellina · 26/03/2020 15:27

What are you talking about @StormyClouds your posts are getting so off piste.
Times are stressful but I don’t think anyone needs to be worried that they might inadvertently be supporting a Nazi uprising because they aren’t complaining to the IPCO about an Avon and Somerset PCSO/Neighbourhood Team leafleting the public and asking them to be mindful of social distancing Hmm

underthepatio · 26/03/2020 15:28

*This is the issue with giving more powers to individuals who are often power-hungry and aggressive as it is.

Nowhere in the government guidance does it say that driving for exercise in a safer location is not acceptable, yet here we have at least one jumped-up police force decreeing it is.

Many police will be loving this as an opportunity to flex their muscles and intimidate people. I'd say to everyone who suffers from this- report to your MP and the Independent Office for Police Conduct for investigation. Every time.*

FFS! which bit of 'people are dying' do you not understand?

LifeImplosionImminent · 26/03/2020 15:29

@grannycake Is me pointing out there might actually be a downside to someone assuming the law doesn't apply to them scaremongering...?

Pigflewpast · 26/03/2020 15:32

I still haven’t seen anyone showing where the government have said we can’t drive 5 mins to walk our dogs safely, rather than walk them in a built up area which is full of people who suddenly want to walk for the first time ever? I know they’ve as much right to walk as I have, but I’m avoiding them by walking somewhere I’ve always walked 5 mins away. I usually walk for a couple of hours but have cut it down to 30 min, so far I haven’t seen another person there ever, despite it being public woods. Plenty of footprints round the entrance but it’s such a big area you don’t see each other.
I am not flouting rules, I’m trying to be as safe as possible, if somebody can show me the rule saying I’m doing wrong then I will stop, and walk my dogs with the 20 billion people walking through town, that’s the only option walking from my house

grannycake · 26/03/2020 15:32

posterLifeImplosionImminent But the downside you pointed out isn't a fact and isn't true That's scaremongering

Leflic · 26/03/2020 15:33

It’s not hard to see why they’re saying this though.
I’m in a small market town and every weekend droves of people drive out to anywhere rural with a car park. Swathes of families and couples in full running/cycling kit alongside hundreds of other identikit families.
Needed to break the idea this is ok.

The idea is we go out alone or with one other. As little as possible.

There’s just been a big crash in the last hour actually on a black spot half a mile from my house. Was it necessary travel? Who knows. If they make it they will get a fair amount of flack for driving somewhere if it wasn’t work.

RoseyLentil · 26/03/2020 15:34

@RufustheLanglovingreindeer
Looks like it's my local police force - Avon and Somerset. Check out the web address bottom left.
I'm very thankful they are doing this tbh. Just heard a friend passed away from cv complications. He was a key worker.
I live on a main road - cars constantly driving by ALL DAY. Stay at home ffs.

TrainspottingWelsh · 26/03/2020 15:34

Waspie Before lockdown I had a car load of the fuckers trying to insist I reverse back down my own driveway so they could turn in it. As though their shit manoeuvring skills bestowed a god given right of way. Long after this is over the police should retain the power to break up groups of ramblers on principle. Or at least the right to shoot them for trespassing.

Smellbellina · 26/03/2020 15:35

Pig unless you have had one of these leaflets left on your car or been approached by PC/PCSO I think you are getting unnecessarily stressed over this, just carry on as you are if you think it is the safest option.

I just find it quite extraordinary that the police cannot attend burglaries or robberies but now seemingly have the resources to monitor where people are walking.

What a pity that they need to monitor people's irresponsible behaviour.

LifeImplosionImminent · 26/03/2020 15:43

@grannycake I didn't say it was a fact, I was surmising, but if you are in the insurance industry and are willing to personally guarantee that a driver involved in an incident, whilst not making an essential journey (or any of the permitted reasons) will not have their motor insurance claim refused purely on that basis then that's great. Very useful information indeed.

grannycake · 26/03/2020 15:49

*LifeImplosionImminent" To do that insurance companies would have to cancel your existing policy and then you would need to reapply or they could add it in to new policies - like they have for pandemics with travel insurance (people with existing policies have cover but not those looking for travel insurance at the moment) but they cannot add it in as a condition to any existing policy

BubblyBarbara · 26/03/2020 15:50

"unnecessary travel" is such a weird term though. Strictly speaking going to buy any food at all is unnecessary as I could wait until I am literally starving and barely able to limp to the shop before going. There is some leeway. Even Nicola Stirgin said once a day shopping is okay.
