Police are pulling over loads of cars in my local town

Stopping people and asking them where they’re going, is it essential, etc. Glad they’re taking it seriously.

And not local to me, but saw this “ticket” on fb. So police saying you can’t drive somewhere to exercise. I know that was being discussed earlier.

What about all the MPs heading back to their constituencies as parliament breaks up? We know they've been exposed to covid 19 in Westminster but off they pop on unnecessary journeys to spread the joy. I wonder if Boris is staying in London while parliament is closed, I imagine he is as he must be busy just now.

grannycake · 26/03/2020 14:14

LifeImplosionImminent Unless they have changed everyone's insurance under the new Act (hint they haven't) that will not be the case. I wish people could stop making things up - this is how fake news spreads

ajandjjmum · 26/03/2020 14:14

We are fortunate enough to live at the entrance to a fairly popular local walk. This week every man and his dog - literally - are driving here, clogging up a country lane, to take their exercise.

I'm biting my tongue and remembering it's tough times for everyone.

woodchuck99 · 26/03/2020 14:15

I really hope that they aren't stopping people driving to exercise. That seems really unfair and lacking in common sense. Not all of us can walk outside our house. I'm disabled and even though the park is only a mile away I have to drive there. It seems quite discriminatory to not let me go to the park because I can't walk there like able bodied people can do.

Alsohuman · 26/03/2020 14:17

If you drive somewhere and have an accident - I'd bet your house that you won't be covered if you can't prove you were going somewhere essential. Ie if shopping, was a supermarket between you and the scene of the accident

Unless the terms and conditions of every motor policy have been changed overnight, this is complete bollocks. Why do people have to make this kind of rubbish up?

Falangalangadingdang · 26/03/2020 14:18

All these people with dogs that need a twenty mile a day walk off lead!

I'm sure the parents of small children and teens have the same issues with their kids with excess energy but a lot of them are complying with a walk around the block.

Highlandcathedral · 26/03/2020 14:19

I would be much more likely to have an accident if I walked from my house. I live in a rural hamlet with no pavement, where, despite the 30mph speed limit we get wagons and cars thundering through. I have 3 dogs - I plan to continue walking them on the quiet farm track 2 miles away that I drive to. There are no footpaths nearer than that, and I never meet anyone.

They have done in places like Italy sonwouldnt be suprised if it comes in here. For the majority of people the exercise can be achieved walking round the block or a few goes up and down the street even if everyone would prefer the nice picturesque park.

Hopeisnotastrategy · 26/03/2020 14:21

Some of the nonsense on here is exactly why the right to exercise will soon be withdrawn. It’s been banned in Spain from the start of the lockdown, the only exception being people can take the dog out within 50m of their home to do the necessary.

Cherrysoup · 26/03/2020 14:22

Report it every time. If nothing else, it prevents them harassing people for a few hours as they have to fill in forms and statements and potentially attend a further interview if the IOPC deem it necessary.

Because the ‘power hungry’, ‘not too bright’ abusive police have time for all this when crime is increasing (feral idiots spitting at and hitting an old lady in the face yesterday) and there’s 7 officers covering my local population of over 110 000. You’re clearly very anti-police, possibly a very unhelpful attitude in the current crisis.

The more of them off the streets filling in paperwork the better as far as I'm concerned

How idiotic. Better hope your advice is ignored when someone assaults you for your shopping/pushes over your elderly relative for theirs.

Ginfordinner · 26/03/2020 14:23

You certainly have a bee in your bonnet about the police StormyClouds

Why? Are you a criminal?

Flatbellyfella · 26/03/2020 14:24

Cars with 3/4 people in are being pulled over in Bath, to see if it's a family, if not, only one in the front & one in the opposite rear is allowed now.

Callcentreworker23 · 26/03/2020 14:26

I've been given a letter from my work to prove the reason I need to drive to work. They are definitely going to bring in more serious measures. Someone on FB said he travelled to my area to run as it's quieter and therefore safer for him!!

BambooSurprise · 26/03/2020 14:27

How would you know, unless you are also in the remote dog walking areas? Grin I took the dog out for our normal walk earlier and was genuinely surpirsed by how many more people I saw without dogs. Not that it matters, the fields are huge and it was easy to keep a distance but it suggests maybe more families ARE exercising away from the block than it might appear.

damnthatanxiety · 26/03/2020 14:27

Littlegoth I have a massive garden, pool and tennis court. I live next to common land. I have zero reason to drive anywhere. Some people do not have this luxury. They live in high density urban apartments. There is nowhere to 'walk' or 'run' that is isolated. The government has very clearly said to use common sense. I have heard several people in power saying that for some people, driving to a nearby open space would indeed be more sensible that navigating crowded urban areas. But hey, you know better than them, huh?

Mummyoflittledragon · 26/03/2020 14:29

You don’t need to drive somewhere to walk.

No you don’t. And many many people don’t. If I get fined for driving to the closest park, I will be severely pissed off. I am disabled and awaiting more surgery. I cannot just walk down my road with the dogs on the lead, down a hill and to the park. A) because of the pull on the lead, which could make my injury more severe, B) because it’s too far and C) because my road is uneven and a big trip risk.

Please have a think police. There are exceptions!

GatoradeMeBitch · 26/03/2020 14:29

It's not discriminatory that you can't choose the prettiest view for being outside in. It's probably mainly a thing so that people who are living in flats with no outside space can get outdoors once a day. However I'm imagine that if you can't walk, or walk easily, that you would be allowed to drive a short distance under those circumstances if you had no other option.

YangShanPo · 26/03/2020 14:30

I find it all a bit scary. Also how will they even know if people are going somewhere essential. I understand having them breaking up gatherings and things.

PolterGoose · 26/03/2020 14:30

The flyer is real, for anyone thinking it's fake.

daisypond · 26/03/2020 14:31

No one should be getting in their car to go and take some exercise. If you can’t reach your park, woodland or beach, you walk where you can - from your front door. You don’t need to walk in a park. The streets and pavements are fine. And you don’t have a choice.

kirinm · 26/03/2020 14:32

I'm in zone 2 in London and I drove somewhere to take my toddler for a walk today. It is near impossible to keep a 2m distance between people at the moment - some don't even try to move. Going to a big park means that is much more possible.

GatoradeMeBitch · 26/03/2020 14:32

Anyone who has a garden to sit in should think of those who don't before they break the rules and get it withdrawn for everyone.

Honestly now I'm understanding why the government were reluctant to introduce lockdown any sooner than they had to. We're a country full of special cases.

puppymouse · 26/03/2020 14:32

It's made it to Somerset Live www.somersetlive.co.uk/news/uk-world-news/you-not-allowed-drive-anywhere-3985395 but they have only said they've approached A&S police. Interested in whether it's a Wellington Police interpretation or a hoax.

Olinguito · 26/03/2020 14:33

I totally get why no one should be making any unnecessary journeys by car, but I am worried that if we were to need to use the car in a medical emergency it will have a flat battery. We don't have a drive and can't run a charging cable from the house as the car isn't right outside. It doesn't seem right to go for a drive just to recharge the battery though (for all the reasons others have already pointed out).

HeIenaDove · 26/03/2020 14:34

Ive got to go out soon for milk potatoes and to top up our key meter. Im going to walk to town and am planning to walk back as its not a big shop. For bigger shops i have to get a taxi back as we now have no car.
