Is anyone ordering non essentials online?

Twigletgirl27 · 25/03/2020 19:13

Just that really. I haven't ordered anything online, I'm thinking clothes (not work items), make up etc. I just feel guilty that someone has to pick and pack my order and then it has to be delivered. These people have to get to work. But then I think, what about these businesses? Do they want us to keep on ordering so that they can try so stay afloat? Plus, does anyone need new clothes to stay in the house?!

What are you doing?

I would if I could - both Majestic and Virgin's websites are down [big grin]

sonypony · 26/03/2020 07:49

Yes I've ordered activity and educational supplies for the kids. Although I think this is one down from food/medicine/nappies on the essentials heirarchy!

tellmewhentheLangshiplandscoz · 26/03/2020 07:49

Article on BBC this am about Pretty Little Thing (sorry, don't know how to do clicky link). Staff don't have room to socially distance and no hand sanitiser.

Clearly many companies still don't give a shit about their staff so please think carefully before buying.

PrincessPain · 26/03/2020 08:15

I think it's about balancing people's mental health as well.
We're being told to keep sane, things like painting your kitchen, learning an instrument, being able to exercise indoors, doing your make up, might all contribute to that depending on the individual and their interests.
I've ordered a few bits from superdrug, some hair dye, some make up and a body scrubbing brush.
It's not essential really, but I've been watching youtube tutorials and trying to get better at my make up so need some bits to practise with.
I've been doing regular exercise indoors and making my portions smaller to save on food and lower my calorie intake.
Just trying to use this time go make myself feel better about me as I have a few issues with anxiety, self confidence and my general health.

Bobbybobbins · 26/03/2020 08:28

I've just bought sun hats for the kids as they don't have any.

Totally agree about thinking 'so we really need this'

Abelino · 26/03/2020 08:36

I've bought some cider from my favourite makers; I think they were sold in some Wetherspoons so they've probably been screwed over (and I just wanted it).

I am cutting down on what I order generally though.

FlamingoAndJohn · 26/03/2020 09:24

I’m really torn. Part of me wants to keep businesses running but I don’t want to force people into going to work.

Our local paper published a list of local businesses doing online orders, including the local independent wine seller! My friend has an independent book shop. If you buy anything from him he will bring it round by hand as his daily exercise.

kersh33 · 26/03/2020 09:32

I'm really struggling with this dilemma too. I'm currently 17 weeks pregnant and while I still just about fit in my pre-pregnancy clothes, they are definitely getting a bit tight!

I have 2 dresses that I think would fit over any baby bump I could use as a back up - but probably not something I could leave the house in. I'm working from home anyway so really don't know whether I should just suck it up for the next 12 weeks or so or whether I can justify ordering some maternity wear.

ACautionaryTale · 26/03/2020 09:36

Wool

If I have to stay cooped up indoors - I WILL knit.

Fi57 · 26/03/2020 09:59

Iv been struggling with this as well, I’d love to order some stuff from white stuff BUT my 62 year old husband works for Royal Mail unloading air cargo and apart from being given gloves and masks and been told to keep apart (which isn’t really doable) I have decided to put all online shopping on hold. My husband said the less people ordering non essential stuff the better for them as there would be much less cargo to deal with.

FiveGoMadInDorset · 26/03/2020 10:21

I have bought a badminton set for the garden

Peridot1 · 26/03/2020 10:58

We are only ordering necessities.

Having a big job done on the garden as part of getting house ready to go on the market. Obv house won’t be going on the market anytime soon but we need to finish the garden. Gardener is happy to keep working as can obv work without coming in contact with us. So we have ordered a load of turf and he will lay it. Original plan was to hire a rotavator and seed it all once prepped. Its a big area so not easy to just do ourselves.

Nothing else coming that I know of.

I’ve browsed few clothing store websites but can’t bring myself to order anything. Was cutting way down on shopping anyway.

Have enough books both real and on kindle already.
Have some jigsaws to do.
Have a massive overstock if skincare and makeup anyway so was on a no buy anyway.

I do want to sort all of our photos out though and get some photo books printed. Will get that ready to just order once things are back to normal.

SilverySurfer · 26/03/2020 11:00

The list of things in my Amazon basket is increasing daily but doubt I will press buy in the current situation.

NekoShiro · 26/03/2020 11:22

Warehouses can't get hold of anti bac hand gel just like we can't, people can carry the virus and show no symptoms, come into the warehouse and infect everyone that ends up sharing their packing bench, hand held scanners, machinery etc, this spread of extra spread of infection is possible because people refuse to stop buying unessential items.

Warehouse staff should be safe at home with their families byt instead they're in work because the companies are twisting the government's guidelines and saying that they are essential when they aren't.

In a life or death situation these things aren't essential and it's disheartening to think that so many people think it's fine for a warehouse employee to put themselves in harms way and potentially have members of their family dying from the virus so that they can buy some bits and pieces just so they aren't bored, last week was the time to prepare for isolation, we were all warned it was coming.

90bisodol · 26/03/2020 12:02

Depends what you class as non-essentials. Eldest DC had to move back home as uni halls were closed, and has chosen to sleep in loft rather than share with 13yo. So we have bought a fold up bed, velux blind and computer desk online, to make it into a bedroom. Essential for us so that we can have some semblance of order while cooped up at home, but I guess not life or death.

PatchworkElmer · 26/03/2020 12:05

I’ve ordered a Boots delivery of hayfever meds (though is is essential for us, to be honest) and tagged on general toiletries. I do feel guilty, yes.

Tootletum · 26/03/2020 12:08

Yes but I ordered everything a few weeks ago. I forgot kids shoes though so I ordered them. Two ways of looking at it, no orders means even fewer jobs, or means people having to go to work. Boris was v clear that he doesn't want all economic activity to stop.

MiracletoCome · 26/03/2020 12:12

Yes, I hope to order some paint from F&B tomorrow after my tester arrives, a few comfy cardigans from Next Sale to wear round the house and this is probably an essential, toofypegs temporary filling from Amazon in case I have a filling come out as dentist has closed

Deux · 26/03/2020 15:26

There are 2 issues here that are at odds with each other. The government want online retail to continue and are encouraging it. Employers are supposed to provide the proper environment for the staff for health and safety and facilitate social distancing and it would seem some aren’t doing it.

The government does not want the economy to collapse completely as so many people are suddenly economically inactive. It's important economically for money to be circulating as well as keeping some people in jobs.

viccat · 26/03/2020 15:32

Again, this is why ordering from small business is best! Most are family run anyway (people who live together can of course work together with no additional risk) or orders will be shipped out by just one person. Of course much of this applies all year round - buy from independents and you'll know the workers are packing your orders in a healthy, happy working environment and getting a fair wage. If you order from Amazon or another huge company, chances are the warehouse staff is never treated very well.

lentenwonder · 26/03/2020 15:49

much as I don't love amazon warehouses, a lot of the companies selling on amazon are themselves small online businesses. Amazon are also big enough to have been investigated and held to some scrutiny for their warehouse practises.

Fi57 · 26/03/2020 19:05

VICCAT so ordering from small company’s is ok? So who do you suppose is going to deliver these items? It’s not just warehouse workers it’s delivery drivers, postal workers, etc, etc.

RoryGillmoresEvilTwin · 26/03/2020 19:24

I really want some addi crasy sock needles but can't bring myself to order them.

Inkpaperstars · 26/03/2020 19:25

NEXT are closing their whole online operation from tonight.

MiracletoCome · 26/03/2020 20:18

That’s good about Next even though my comfy cardigans won’t come now. My toofypegs is on its way from Amazon
