Is anyone ordering non essentials online?

Twigletgirl27 · 25/03/2020 19:13

Just that really. I haven't ordered anything online, I'm thinking clothes (not work items), make up etc. I just feel guilty that someone has to pick and pack my order and then it has to be delivered. These people have to get to work. But then I think, what about these businesses? Do they want us to keep on ordering so that they can try so stay afloat? Plus, does anyone need new clothes to stay in the house?!

What are you doing?

I would but have no need

  1. boosts economy, which i hope lots will go towards nhs
  2. ppl on 0 work hours, i have no idea how they are dealing with this... Delivery ppl who want to work and keep their living wage

Yet i feel sorry for workers in warehouses who want to stay at home. I wish they get a choice

rjebgf · 25/03/2020 19:50

I have ordered a laptop and a printer. To help educate my kids. I am not sure if that counts as essential at the moment.

Lifeaback · 25/03/2020 19:52

I ordered lots of crafty type supplies to keep my DDs occupied/help give them ‘fun’ projects- not too sure if that’s classed as ‘essential’ as they’ve got plenty of toys and we’re doing stuff like baking/gardening etc.

Last night I also ordered prints of about two years worth of photos and some albums to put them in as it’s been something I’ve been meaning to do for a while and now that I have more time it seemed like a good project.

On the one hand I feel guilty about the people in warehouses/delivery drivers as I know what a busy time it is, but equally part of me does feel people need to keep spending money to keep the economy going

Dinosauratemydaffodils · 25/03/2020 19:52

I have. I've had 3 deliveries of books from various sources in the last week. Got another 2 coming.

They've been delivered by a variety of companies, most of which seem to be taking precautions such as wearing gloves, emailing/messaging to say they are here or will be in the next 5 minutes and then leaving package on doorstep having rung the doorbell.

cantkeepawayforever · 25/03/2020 19:56

I ordered a French coursework book and some oil paint (for DD, who is now doing Art and French A-levels unguided in our front room) and wall paint (for her to paint her bedroom with, as a distraction from trying to teach herself A-levels at home). I have also ordered musical instrument consumables for DS (home from music college) - essentially his work supplies.

I wouldn't order clothes, or makeup, or furniture - but if we are all working from home until September at least, then we do need some work supplies.

cantkeepawayforever · 25/03/2020 19:57

The room paint is a luxury. I feel bad about that one.

Staypositivepeople · 25/03/2020 19:58

I’ve ordered an exercise bike ,as I can’t cope with out my daily visit to the gym

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 25/03/2020 19:59

One of my DDs will likely need new shoes soon. And some summer dresses or shorts. She won't stop growing...

We are trying to work out what we need over the next few months and ordering asap.... But none of it is essential, just makes our life easier...

HunterHearstHelmsley · 25/03/2020 20:00

I've bought my mum some birthday presents. She is miserable about being apart from her grandchildren so I wanted to make her smile.

Twigletgirl27 · 25/03/2020 20:03

Thanks for all your replies and there are a few who feel torn as I do. I'll happily order anything 'essential' I think but nothing else.

Who knows how I may feel in another 3 months though!

I've ordered some baby toys and some stuff for the garden. I also ordered a playpen/travel cot cos DS has outgrown his moses basket

snowyforest · 25/03/2020 20:08

Im planning on ordering some skincare things, perhaps some books.

If anyone is a delivery driver or married to one what do you think?

My fiance and I have ordered our birthday presents as we cannot choose from the shops. I know someone who works for the post office and he said its absolutely fine to order whatever you need or want to. They have procedures in place to ensure their safety. He himself has ordered stuff he wanted to. Everyone I have spoken to has said that in order to make everything bearable and pass time etc we need to be able to do this. I have ordered craft stuff, as I said on another post I need to occupy myself etc otherwise my mental health will further deteriorate and I could end up in hospital. Parents need to order things to occupy and educate their children.

Micah · 25/03/2020 20:29

Some debate whether it's essential or non-essential, given that off licences are on the list of shops allowed to be open!

If you are alcoholic it’s an essential.

Cutting off supplies will send a lot of people into withdrawal, they will end up in a&e putting demand on the nhs.

KitKat1985 · 25/03/2020 20:30

I ordered some stuff to keep the kids entertained (paints, some toys for the garden) from Amazon, but the delivery isn't due until May!

ChippyMinton · 25/03/2020 20:32

I’ve ordered a trampoline.

And 25m of elastic.

Judge away.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 25/03/2020 20:36

I've ordered lots of yarn. Stress plus more time indoors are to blame.

I am working, I'm a nurse but need crochet projects to de-stress and keep my mind occupied on something that's not Covid 19.

Also need to buy some bras.

MortyFide · 25/03/2020 20:36

I want to do a few bits in the garden as I'm going to have all this downtime, but I need a big bag of compost. I daren't get it from B&Q as its not essential, and if I order it someone has to pick, pack, send and deliver it...

browzingss · 25/03/2020 20:38

I would place orders as normal yes, unless we’re advised otherwise.

TiddyTid · 25/03/2020 20:40

I need to order a tin opener. Mines broken

JemSynergy · 25/03/2020 20:41

I ordered some books last week but they still haven't arrived. I can't get anything from Amazon so I've finally decided to cancel my prime membership.

Mummyshark2018 · 25/03/2020 20:47

I ordered plants for the hanging baskets. I thought it better than going to a garden centre- which are open. It will give us something to do as a family and make sure that plants aren't being destroyed.

eaglejulesk · 25/03/2020 20:54

Good grief - the UK really is a different world! We are not allowed to do online shopping here, other than for essentials.

SherlocksDeerstalker · 25/03/2020 20:55

Morty call your local garden centres. Ours are all doing delivery for locals. Pay over the phone and then leave on the doorstep for you. Feeling very glad we took delivery of a 40-bag palette of manure before all this kicked off!
