Is anyone ordering non essentials online?

Twigletgirl27 · 25/03/2020 19:13

Just that really. I haven't ordered anything online, I'm thinking clothes (not work items), make up etc. I just feel guilty that someone has to pick and pack my order and then it has to be delivered. These people have to get to work. But then I think, what about these businesses? Do they want us to keep on ordering so that they can try so stay afloat? Plus, does anyone need new clothes to stay in the house?!

What are you doing?

I am considering it just to get some nice lounge wear suitable for spring / summer. Currently wearing jeans and stuff which somehow feel a bit too dressy for being in the house somehow. But don't want to contribute to the workload of people who should ultimately be at home

Yes I know that is totally trivial for what is happening

Mum4Fergus · 25/03/2020 20:59

I have a different view...my DH is a delivery driver, has been classed as a key worker and provided with written authority to be out and about should he be questioned.

Today he delivered in excess of 100 parcels to the same volume of households - potentially putting himself, those 100 households, DS and I at risk. And for what? Next, MAC Cosmetics and PYT orders.

Please, only order essentials x

maa1992 · 25/03/2020 21:01

I ordered a weaning bib for my baby online, like a full body one. Deffo not a necessity but it'll make my life easier

Hannah021 · 25/03/2020 21:16

@eaglejulesk our government is encouraging online shopping... No point killing the economy on top of job losses.

TheSandman · 25/03/2020 21:23

I just bought a comic on eBay. Totally unessential in the general scheme of things but fills a gap in a collection and buying it made me feel so good. My one treat of the very long hard day. I mailed the vendor telling me not to post it until it was practical to do so. The comic is 40 years old. It can wait a few more weeks. (One of those weeks will be spent sitting unopened in my hall in quarantine.)

DH and I have ordered top up supplies for our hobbies, I've ordered a printer and craft bits for the kids.

NeverForgetYourDreams · 25/03/2020 22:13

I've ordered some tile grout from amazon for an emergency shower repair because B&Q etc are closed .......

fantasmasgoria1 · 25/03/2020 23:19

Mum4fergus I see your point but what you deem essentials and what others do are different things. My fiance is classed as a keyworker. He has to go in different places to carry out his job. He comes into contact with others but he and customers are being very careful and following guidelines. He feels that in order to get through this tough time and to ensure we manage to stay as mentally well as possible if ordering items to keep us occupied and prevent depression and anxiety then fair enough.

TheArchSorcererofContwaraburg · 25/03/2020 23:25

I live in a rural area so have pretty much always ordered non-essentials online.

viccat · 25/03/2020 23:31

I work for a small online retailer and we have taken steps to keep the team safe, I know other small businesses are the same. For example, many small businesses are family run anyway and if family members live together, then it's very safe for them to drive to work in an otherwise empty shop or warehouse together and have a courier/postman collect the parcels completely contactless from outside a door. Everyone else in the team works from home remotely (admin/marketing/customer service etc.). The courier company we use delivers contactless too and parcels are either left in a safe place or on the doorstep but with no signature required.

I ordered a tool from Amazon to enable my year 13 son to finish his A level DT project.

blue25 · 25/03/2020 23:58

We’ve ordered lots of garden, craft, decorating bits as well as wine, chocolate and new bedding/pyjamas.

TerribleCustomerCervix · 26/03/2020 00:02

I’ve noticed on social media over the last week A LOT of retailers offering codes for shopping online over the last week. Especially small, sahm owned businesses.

I haven’t bought anything but I can 100% see the value in spending money in our local economies as well as supporting smaller U.K./Irish businesses who I want to make it out the other side of this.

Compost bark and pots.
Stain for the gates and fences.
Farrow and ball paint for the garage doors.
Lights and drivers and wiring for lighting in the kitchen.
If the lighting in the kitchen is successful I will order more for my wardrobes.
HG mould remover.

kirinm · 26/03/2020 06:40

Next are insisting staff come in. Maybe that should make us rethink how we see Next (it has me).

Waxonwaxoff0 · 26/03/2020 06:58

My workplace manufactures household goods for online retailers. Orders have reduced by about 60% so I've been furloughed but people are definitely still ordering things.

Passthecake30 · 26/03/2020 06:58

I'll be getting as bday presents on line. I won't be buying clothes, shoes etc for myself as I'm sure most would need to go back (odd size) and I don't want my house full of that - plus why spend money on stuff I'm not going to need if at home? I might need to buy dd sandals if it warms up, that's it. We are making do with everything else.

Eireni · 26/03/2020 07:03

It has made me hesitate and consider “do I really need to buy this now?” when usually I’d just click away, I’m constantly having packages delivered I forgot I ordered normally Blush

I’ve had to order pet food, cat litter and cleaning/laundry supplies, all things I normally buy in bulk online anyway and was running out of. I had hesitated on 2 things - hair bobbles(!) and seeds for the allotment. However I think I’ll relax and just order the seeds. Life does have to go on the best we can.

TheHumansAreDefinitelyDead · 26/03/2020 07:04

No I am not

I thought about it

But ultimately it increases virus spread (as the poster up thread said, whose DP is a delivery driver risking his health for the sake af delivering cosmetics and fashion items)

Buying online does not mean nobody touches anything, it means people in warehouses/post-office/delivering all need to interact

Stopped selling stuff on eBay as well

EverydayLife · 26/03/2020 07:06

I’ve ordered several things from Argos including a toaster, a keyboard and dc’s birthday presents. Next day delivery.

It doesn’t feel right to be ordering clothes though and I’ve thought, what’s the point anyway.

Megan2018 · 26/03/2020 07:14

I’m ordering what I need as usual. The economy needs it.
Not bothering with clothes for me (but am buying baby things) but am buying house, diy etc plus anything to keep me sane and baby toys.

We never decorated a nursery as baby cosleeps but we are now planning to do her room as something to do!

Yester · 26/03/2020 07:18

Batteries for my vibrator. Feels quite essential though 😁

FourHigh · 26/03/2020 07:27

Yes I've been ordering, mainly because I think it will help boost the economy but also because I'm a bit concerned that they will stop online deliveries of non essentials soon. I've only been ordering for my daughter's birthday in April, summer clothes for kids and craft stuff to keep them busy. All done now.

KatherineJaneway · 26/03/2020 07:40

Yes, I've ordered from Amazon some items to help me fill my time up. Did a wine order too.
