I'm a care worker and my boss has given is all letters to prove we're legit to be out and about. Am wondering if there's new measures coming? I've seen plenty out and about today when driving home.

I will need to do a list anyway for my Waitrose trip this afternoon or I will forget something which wouldn’t normally be a problem but will be now

Queue was apparently about half hour yesterday which would probably deter a casual shopper

itsallamysterytome · 26/03/2020 11:46

Every time you enter a supermarket or corner shop as a boredom buster you are putting the person behind the counter at risk. Please think about the importance of what you are buying and how many times you are going into a shop.

Oh and when you go, go by yourself, not with your partner, not with your bored teenager and definitely not with your kids.

My two DSs or my life may just be the ones you are endangering.

adaline · 26/03/2020 12:02

I'm surprised, driving there to congregate? It is hardly sunbathing weather or are they all going for a walk on the beach?

No, driving there to walk. You're not supposed to drive to get exercise, you have to do it from your doorstep now.

Stinkynincompoop · 26/03/2020 12:05

My DH had just been out to do a weeks shop and got virtually everything we needed, and we felt that with what we already had we would not have to go out again this week.
2 hours later DD said she had just started her period and hadn't got a full pack of san pro. We will prob need to go out again at the weekend now.

Yesterdayforgotten · 26/03/2020 14:03

adaline another pp said there is no legislation to say you can't drive to get exercise. It is very confusing when so many people have different views on 'the rules.'

Yesterdayforgotten · 26/03/2020 14:07

Stinkynincompoop I'm half waiting for somebody to swoop in here and tell you you that sanitary products are not an essential and your dd can use something reusable and washable that is around the home already etc. Already witnessed somebody on another thread saying milk for their toddler wasnt essential, it seems people like to make the rules up in these sorts of situations and judge others Bey do not know.

Yesterdayforgotten · 26/03/2020 14:07

they*

browzingss · 26/03/2020 14:13

“The rules” are simple in my mind, you’re supposed to, by default, stay at home. Do you understand why?

You are allowed to make essential trips for supplies or exercise outside. Driving somewhere simply to exercise is obviously a non essential journey. You can walk/jog/cycle outside your property, even if it isn’t the most scenic view.

If people keep taking the piss with outdoor exercise like this, you know what comes next right? We won’t be able to exercise outside at all, and the government will be much more strict when enforcing penalties on people. We obviously don’t have enough police to monitor each individual so I assume that there will be full closures of certain roads or motorways, police checkpoints etc.

Personally, I would love it if the people that continue to make non essential journeys would be triaged as the lowest priority for healthcare. If you catch the disease whilst fucking around and not staying at home, you shouldn’t be taking up a vital ventilator that could be used for someone else.

It's not my view - I'm just going with what our local police are saying. They have put a roadblock up at our local beach car park to prevent people driving there and are turning people around if they try and drive to local beauty spots.

cologne4711 · 26/03/2020 14:19

Lots of people fined for buying newspapers today

They're for sale, you're allowed to go out for exercise - why would buying a paper be against the rules?

cologne4711 · 26/03/2020 14:21

A lot of people can - I can, for example. But my mother lives in a hilly village where most of the roads have no paths. So she does need to drive somewhere to find somewhere safe (and flat) to go for a walk.

Too many people getting involved in other peoples' business. Stay indoors, follow the rules and you won't need to worry about other people because you won't get it anyway.

adaline · 26/03/2020 14:21

Because going out with the sole purpose of buying a newspaper is not an essential trip. Nothing to stop people picking one up when they go to buy bread and milk, though.

cologne4711 · 26/03/2020 14:23

if it is such a short drive to get away from people than couldnt you just walk or cycle it from your address

Not if there are no safe paths, or you can't ride a bike.

cologne4711 · 26/03/2020 14:26

Because going out with the sole purpose of buying a newspaper is not an essential trip

But going out for daily exercise IS allowed. So you can go for a walk and pick up a newspaper while you are out. Lots of people subscribe now. I have a sub to the Times, and they've not frozen the subscription, in fact they sent out a load of new paper vouchers! Not sure paper vouchers are so great if shops are funny about accepting cash.

yearinyearout · 26/03/2020 14:30

Someone put a post on Facebook alleging that their friend had been fined for buying a newspaper. Clearly bullshit but it got shared numerous times on fb so must be true 🙄 I wouldn't mind but it was posted before they even put the on the spot fine thing through parliament.

RosieSunset · 26/03/2020 14:35

@TeaForTara I’ve noticed that with chicken too. I think the thing is that the chickens for sale now were hatched about 12 weeks ago. So even if production was ramped up 4 weeks ago it won’t be hitting the shops yet. Similar with eggs- takes even longer to raise a laying hen to the point it can lay eggs. So there’s a time lag.

browzingss · 26/03/2020 14:37

@cologne4711 as a key worker I unfortunately can’t worry about “not getting it anyway”. Hence why I’d rather idiots like yourself stayed indoors. Or if you continue to “buy newspapers” (which isn’t essential, even if you combine it with a walk) then I truly hope you and your household just get triaged as a low priority for healthcare. Actually once the NHS is overwhelmed - through your own doing - you’ll receive the very basic care regardless.

Also my heart truly bleeds for your mum (!) she is aware that the next step of lockdown will mean that she won’t have a choice as the exercise privilege will be taken away? So she’ll be stuck inside without the option of walking around her local area at all.

adaline · 26/03/2020 14:38

But going out for daily exercise IS allowed. So you can go for a walk and pick up a newspaper while you are out.

I suppose the argument is that you're going into a shop necessarily and touching surfaces/door handles/money when you don't have to.

Not saying I agree with it, but that's presumably what they're getting at.

Rubyroost · 26/03/2020 16:06

No no no. Going out for exercise and going to shop once a day for newspaper are completely different. You can exercise in the fresh air and not come into contact with people, when going into a shop you do. Wtf! Really what is so hard to understand. You go into a shop 7 times and you are theoretically 7 x more likely to catch it than someone who doesn't. Keep going to that shop once you've caught it and not showing symptoms then you are then passing it on. 😡

Frouby · 26/03/2020 16:11

I think the act specifies no unnecessary travel to stop a repeat of the shitshow at the weekend of people descending on beaches, popular tourist areas, beauty spots and having lovely long days out in the countryside. Not only cos Corona but also because of the risk in roads and risks walking up bloody Snowdonia.

I suppose at a push if you lived somewhere it was unsafe to walk or run or cycle along, like an A road then it would be reasonable to drive a few miles to get to somewhere you can be outside safely. Because then it becomes a necessary journey.

But no one should be leaving the area that they live in other than to buy essentials or medicines or go to work.

We live near a lake and it's absolutely beautiful. I have avoided it the last couple of days because I expect there will be loads of people doing their exercise around it. It's car park looked full yesterday when I walked past. The trust that owns it were considering closing the carpark but then there was concerns that they would just park on the estate and cause more problems.

Apparently there are a few groups of teens hanging out there as well. Police moved a load yesterday and on the local fb page another couple of pics have just gone on.

Whycantibeapuppy · 26/03/2020 17:37

Same here, currently nannying for a family with one key worker parent and one not. They have me a letter a week ago so I could still work for them

Bunnyfuller · 26/03/2020 17:41

Not that we have enough police to actually enforce it 😂 and no clarity how to check if your shopping is ‘essential’ or if it’s your second third or nine hundredth walk...

FFS. New powers mean nothing without the resources and fine detail

OJZJ · 26/03/2020 17:51

The police can stop your car and fine you, a lot of people were driving to beauty spots to walk the dog and flouting the 2 metre ruling. We can no longer drive to take the dog out.... Not that we have ventured further than the garden since Saturday. Thank God it's 3 -12 weeks and not a draconian way of life like some people have endured eh?

chomalungma · 26/03/2020 17:54

Saw the police setting up a block on the ring road near me half an hour ago.

We have the 'separated parents' reason.

Lordfrontpaw · 26/03/2020 17:59

Hmmmm. Victoria Park in East London is now closed because people weren’t sticking to the rules. Selfish gits.
