I've offered to do shopping for three elderly people. I'm not needed:

One doesn't think it's a problem to pop into the Post Office for newspaper and then into Lidl around 8am every day (age 85)

One has COPD (age late 70s) . It's not a problem as she's allowed to go to Tescos elderly persons shopping hour.

The other (aged 78) got bus into town yesterday to go into M&S foodhall, Post Office and Boots. Has gone into town again on bus to same shops (Boots was to spend her points on a treat).

I've been for a walk this afternoon. I was the one who moved in 75% of cases to try and give us a decent distance. Two joggers and a cyclist came very close to me when I couldn't move any more out of the way. Looks like I'll have to go out really early or late, and leave it others to pass the virus amonst themselves and hope they don't expect to be first in the queue for treatment.

Anyone else come across similar attitudes?

@maadlady

The NHS receives £150 billion of our money and many of its staff are paid well over £100,000 a year.

The restrictions the NHS wanted are in place, now it is time for them to step up to the plate and do their jobs to be quite frank.

browzingss · 24/03/2020 18:25

@StormyClouds “many” NHS staff may earn over £100k but I’m sure you’re aware that’s not the majority. Particularly as their banding/salaries are public record. My best friend is a junior nurse who actually works on the COVID-19 pod, earns about £24k. Risking her life daily, for a pittance.

Why do you think NHS staff aren’t “doing their jobs” already? You sound quite bitter.

Random18 · 24/03/2020 18:26

I don't want a further lockdown. The one we have now is what we were already following anyway

To a PP who said that there were many people she didn't recognise at the park - as long as they are socially distancing what is the issue? They live locally, they need exercise and are following government advice.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with going out for a walk or a bike ride if you are doing it alone or in a family group.

www.scmp.com/news/china/society/article/3052163/chinas-wuhan-lockdown-helped-limit-global-spread-coronavirus

Maybe we should not be just hoping for the best. This situation has been going on for a number of weeks more in China. Perhaps we need to look at what they did in China and try to follow suit. They no doubt made mistakes but we don't need to make those same mistakes again...

And look at what has worked in other countries or not:

Random18 · 24/03/2020 18:28

Job I do not want us to follow China at all!!!!!!

I am fed up with the comparisons with China. Lockdown yea, Chines Lockdown - fuck off

itsgettingweird · 24/03/2020 18:33

Bluntness that's interesting re the 75%. So what's that 50 million people? I guess that's 16 million still out and about working? I guess in some areas that could seem a dense amount of people but in a lot of areas very quiet?

LuluJakey1 · 24/03/2020 18:35

In Germany no more than 2 adults are allowed out together- so a family with 4 adults could not go out in a group. That makes sense to me. It is clear, there is no space for people to manipulate it by saying they live together.
I also think teenagers should not be out without an adult - yesterday and today there have been teenagers in groups out- I have seen them in groups up to 6 yesterday and 4 today. The police stopped one today and they were told they lived in the same house Hmm which the police accepted and the teenagers left laughing.

itsgettingweird · 24/03/2020 18:37

Stormy are you actually serious? The nhs staff are risking their lives daily to save ours.
Stay at home is easy to understand.

No one is stopping us visiting supermarkets etc. But some people seem to think they need a trolley full daily including 36 loo rolls.

LuluJakey1 · 24/03/2020 18:41

I agree with someone earlier in the thread about ice cream vans.
We live at the coast. There are ice cream vans, Italian ice cream shops with takeaway counters, fish and chip sellers, takeaway coffee and sandwiches along the seafront. They simply encourage people to visit and stay for a long period, queue, eat close to each other. It is madness and not banned within the regulations. In fact they encourage more cafes to do takeaway as long as they do not provide places to sit outside.

jobhunter7 · 24/03/2020 18:43

@Random18

I'd prefer if people didn't die unnecessarily...

And if other countries have found ways to grasp with this situation, perhaps we should following how they did it...

Whichever countries they may be...

dandymottahs · 24/03/2020 18:43

Totally agree OP

sadatchristmas1 · 24/03/2020 18:44

I've been in work all day. People are out shopping for non essential goods like it's a bank holiday. I'm disgusted tbh. I have argued with customers about social distancing rules in the checkout queue and been told I'm pathetic. So many people do not give a shit. My son (who is at home) said a neighbour has been out to walk their dog 3 times today. We as a country are a disgrace. I wish I could just hibernate till this was all over 😭

Remmy123 · 24/03/2020 18:46

Very very quite where I am I feel people are taking it seriously (Surrey)

FeelingCrap54 · 24/03/2020 18:48

I’d say the NHS staff ARE “stepping up to the plate” as you so eloquently put it.

Many are going above and beyond that plate too. 🙄 Hmm

Always one resentful idiot on these threads.

Especially when you take into account a decade of underfunding to both the police and the NHS,

But they should “step up to the plate”

And maybe you should fuck off @StormyClouds Angry

FairyBunnyAgain · 24/03/2020 19:01

We do need more rules and as much as I don’t want to harm business anymore including my SME employer we really need to be closing all factories and offices etc unless they are genuinely supporting the fight against Coronavirus. We don’t need to manufacture random widgets, sell no food or medicine in most cases, nor do we need to be marketing businesses, or producing materials, nor do we need to sell houses or cars.
But for as long as it is not spelt out in very clear language we will, because like Mr Weathersppon and Mr Sports Direct have demonstrated listening, commentary sense and decency do not exist in most business owners minds. Just profit and loss.

And as for excercise, I take a break from my desk every lunchtime, often I pop into town for a wander or to run errands. Or I take a circular walk. As shops are out of bounds, I went for my usual walk, first half no problem 1 dog walker, I moved to the road to keep the gap.. 2nd half nightmare jogger 1 ran straight at me not attempt to avoid and didn’t give me the chance to step into the road. Crossed the road and random teenager walked straight towards me!

DD didn’t go out until 6pm and went further to our local open space, said it was really busy like on Sunday with groups and few people tryin* to maintain the 2m gap. She will try something else tomorrow.

PhantomErik · 24/03/2020 19:03

It's actually pretty quiet around here (Cornwall).

Hardly any cars passing by.

I went to Aldi today for fresh stuff that will now see us through at least a week & the shelves were all but full & people noticably staying far apart. Felt quite reassured.

TheFlis12345 · 24/03/2020 19:09

It’s not as simple as ‘let them get on with it, if they die it is their own fault’. Their irresponsible, selfish actions will effect others. They could be spreading it. Or when hospitalised, take up the bed and NHS staff time that should have gone to someone with an illness they couldn’t avoid. They could infect the doctors and nurses looking after them. They need to think about the wider consequences beyond their own wants.

DontCallMeShitley · 24/03/2020 19:12

The only problems today were the teens walking into people and not distancing because they were on their phones, or too ignorant, or have ignorant or stupid parents who let them out to hang about in the streets.

I don't care if they want to kill themselves but wish they would bugger off and do it at home with some other method rather than inflict the virus on those that are being careful.

If, and it is not likely now, I go to the same place again I will be kicking them in the shins if they are that close, they won't notice otherwise due to having things stuck in their ears, probably to stop their tiny brains from falling out.

Whatthefoxgoingon · 24/03/2020 19:22

@StormyClouds

Do tell us how you’ve been risking your life to help people dying on in ITU with COVID19.

Otherwise, kindly fuck off with your stepping up to the plate nonsense.

CloudsCanLookLikeSheep · 24/03/2020 19:22

Most people going out are probably doing it because they have not been allowed/unable to work from home and need to put food on the table (not talking about key workers)

The only way to implement a total lockdown would be to apply the 80% wage thing to all except key workers who would get their regular wage. Or have a universal payment.

The80sweregreat · 24/03/2020 19:50

Nobody cares! I'm beginning to hate my fellow man and woman. Stories I've heard would curl your hair .
I'm so depressed.

StormyClouds · 24/03/2020 20:01

@Whatthefoxgoingon

Last time I checked NHS staff were not held at gunpoint and forced to work. NHS roles are entirely voluntary and are in many cases extremely well-paid.

I fully accept that many NHS staff do a wonderful job, but they are not saints. Where is the same recognition for teachers?

StormyClouds · 24/03/2020 20:03

@FeelingCrap54

The NHS does not have an underfunding problem- it has an inefficiency problem.

Its budget has increased by over £40 billion in the last 10 years, we have far higher spending per head than most other countries, yet we still have the lowest number of ICU beds in Europe.

FeelingCrap54 · 24/03/2020 20:04

Who told you that...the DM or the Tories. Are you really THAT dim?

Parker231 · 24/03/2020 20:10

I think we need extremely tough lockdown measures to prevent idiots continuing to go out and about, catch the virus and then expect my DH to put his life on the line when they turn up at hospital needing ventilation.

I don’t want my DH to be working in A&E at the moment (he is normally a GP) but he has no choice.

The NHS needs significantly more funding - hopefully this will be the one good thing to come from this virus.
