We need a tighter lockdown

I've offered to do shopping for three elderly people. I'm not needed:

One doesn't think it's a problem to pop into the Post Office for newspaper and then into Lidl around 8am every day (age 85)

One has COPD (age late 70s) . It's not a problem as she's allowed to go to Tescos elderly persons shopping hour.

The other (aged 78) got bus into town yesterday to go into M&S foodhall, Post Office and Boots. Has gone into town again on bus to same shops (Boots was to spend her points on a treat).

I've been for a walk this afternoon. I was the one who moved in 75% of cases to try and give us a decent distance. Two joggers and a cyclist came very close to me when I couldn't move any more out of the way. Looks like I'll have to go out really early or late, and leave it others to pass the virus amonst themselves and hope they don't expect to be first in the queue for treatment.

Anyone else come across similar attitudes?

Only one ignorant bastard here, the rest were far better at keeping their distance and only family groups out as far as I could see.

awkwardbuttons · 24/03/2020 16:49

Although my elderly next door neighbour (80s; cancer) is still insisting on going to the shops. He would no matter the lockdown though unless they didn't allow us out for food at all but that won't happen.

Zacharyezrarawlings · 24/03/2020 16:52

I went for a run this morning at 7am (picked a quiet route.) passed one other runner , one walker and one lady walking her dog. All were very respectful and we all gave each other plenty of space. Lady with the dog waited deliberately to cross road to my side until after I'd run past and I nodded my thanks to her.
I was surprised at how many cars were still on the roads though.

itsgettingweird · 24/03/2020 16:56

I wondered if increase in cars is actually people avoiding pucblic transport?

I know a few key workers (and yes essential) who can WFH and do already but cannot avoid office work at times. (Court etc). They usually travel by train. But they aren't now.

Geepipe · 24/03/2020 16:57

Tighter lockdowns needed. Look at the ammount of non essential businesses still running. Look at how many people are crammed on the london under ground this morning. Look at how many people now claim they need to go out for walks with their entire families. People do not get it.

The80sweregreat · 24/03/2020 16:59

It's annoying and despair of this country and why people can't obey the rules.
The government should shut down the construction companies and make sure people are paid.
I've read some horror stories on here.
The nhs will break under the strain : then nobody will get seen.

browzingss · 24/03/2020 17:01

At this point, the elderly people you mentioned are just purposely ignoring medical advice. I don’t think tighter lockdown will help people like that.

PicsInRed · 24/03/2020 17:03

On my walk, saw 2 different small groups standing and chatting. Not same households as they went separate ways. Multiple elderly amongst them. Many very elderly people out and about.

One socialiser actually had the temerity to look at those in twos or with kids and complain that so many folk are out!

People simply aren't adhering to the law and their fecklessness will mean the rest of us will be further locked down in 3 weeks, if not sooner.

OddshoesOddsocks · 24/03/2020 17:06

My DP has been told that his boss as ‘found a loophole’ so it’s business as usual tomorrow. We’re listening to the news now and it doesn’t sound like there’s anyway round it. He’s not a key worker but absolutely can not work from home. I think that even if they close down construction sites (he doesn’t work on one but a similar scenario) they won’t include his sector so theyll keep going regardless!

StormyClouds · 24/03/2020 17:07

Fuck off. The current lockdown is bad enough in liberal democratic society. The only further restrictions that could be implemented would be to ban exercise, which would cause a whole host of physical and mental issues.

Even in Italy, people are allowed to go out for newspapers, food etc

The government has gone far enough and it is now up to the NHS to step up to the plate.

lubeybooby · 24/03/2020 17:10

@StormyClouds hope you still think that and are happy knowing the goverment 'went far enough' when someone you know needs a ventilator, but there's one left and 100 others who need it. The NHS can't work magic and pull ventilators out of their arses no matter how much they step up the bloody plate

Further and tighter control is definitely needed

browzingss · 24/03/2020 17:10

This might sound nasty but if vulnerable people refuse to stay at home whilst knowing that they’re the most at risk of death, they’re wittingly tempting fate to the point that it’s attempted suicide. Or natural selection perhaps? Whichever euphemism you want to use.

Flaxmeadow · 24/03/2020 17:11

People ignoring it here. More cars on the roads than usual. People in the streets.children playing the streets. It's like a bank holiday but with more of everything going on. No change at all. People acting like they havent got a care in the world

Bluntness100 · 24/03/2020 17:15

I agree, let’s see the numbers, they need seventy five percent of the population to limit their activities to stop this the scientists are saying and I think they may have achieved that.

Calling for more less than a day after it was put in place is a bit much in my view.

The British public wanted this lock down, let’s not start screaming for China style measures.

Bluntness100 · 24/03/2020 17:17

People acting like they havent got a care in the world

Then if they die they die. You can’t help stupid and the rest of us shouldn’t have to suffer because of them.

StormyClouds · 24/03/2020 17:17

For the idiots wanting even further restrictions, who is going to police them?

There are not enough police officers as it is to deal with normal crimes (which will not stop btw), so where are the numbers going to come from to monitor every street in every village, town and city in the country?

This has to be done by consent as there is no practical alternative. There are 17000 police in Scotland for example- many of whom will be dealing with actual crimes and many of whom will be off sick or self-isolating.

StormyClouds · 24/03/2020 17:18

Fully agree @Bluntness100.

If vulnerable people are choosing to go against the clear advice for them to stay at home, that is their choice and they have to take the consequences.

YouAreTheEggManIAmTheWalrus · 24/03/2020 17:24

I actually told someone to fucking move away from me today. Took the dog out, walking down a narrow lane, three 20 something people heading towards me walking next to each other but slightly distancing so covering the whole lane. The outer one wasn’t even trying to not bump into me as we walked past each other and on my left was a wall so not like I could move out of the way. What aren’t people getting?

Bluntness100 · 24/03/2020 17:38

Agree, where are we going to get all the police to enforce these rules. You can’t have them on every street in every town and village checking. It’s impossible.

If people can’t comply they need to take the consequences. The rest of us should not be penalised further because of these people. If they end up in hospital and can’t get the treatment they need and die, then it’s the risk they chose to take. It’s not like they didn’t know.

Penalising the many for the actions of the few is not ok.

Deelish75 · 24/03/2020 17:40

I woke up this morning feeling like we'd entered a new dawn, and it was fairly quiet this morning. Very different this afternoon though. I live near a park, and you get used to seeing the same taking thier dogs for walks, I've seen a few of them but I've seen loads of people I don't recognise heading to and from the park for their exercise.
Where I live it's mainly houses with gardens, not flats. I feel as though a lot of people have got that Sunday feeling, kind of treating it like a jolly.
Ive been listening to LBC this afternoon, and one caller was saying he saw one man in his local mini supermarket buying a packet of crisps - cos that's an essential right?

happymummy12345 · 24/03/2020 17:47

I can hear the ice cream van in the distance, will be on our road fairly soon. I appreciate like the rest of us they need money to live, but it's irresponsible surely?

PicsInRed · 24/03/2020 17:49

For the idiots wanting even further restrictions, who is going to police them?

I don't want further lockdown. I didn't even want this lockdown. But irresponsible twats caused lockdown to be necessary and these probably the same socialising twats will be the reason the govt take what remains of our freedom.

I hope the govt just start arresting and imprisoning quarantining offenders (like China did) rather than further imprisoning the rest of us.

Feckless, twatty bastards. Off to quarantine for you.

www.scmp.com/news/china/society/article/3052163/chinas-wuhan-lockdown-helped-limit-global-spread-coronavirus

Maybe we should follow more what they did in China. Restrictions are about to eased in Wuhan. They are a few weeks ahead of us so we can learn about what did or did not work...

picklemewalnuts · 24/03/2020 17:51

As we get older we tend to be more rigid in the way we think. A lot will say 'but I had to go out, I needed my paper/I go everyday/I fancied an egg'.

My mother has started to grasp that she can't go out, but can't understand why my sister doesn't drop everything to get what she wants every time she asks.

maadlady · 24/03/2020 17:54

Words fail me...NHS needs to 'step up to the plate.' I can only imagine your lignorance stems from never needing their services ever. What could happen at its worst cos of the wont affect me mentality..few medics that are still alive let alone healthy no matter how much you can afford to pay them
