The private healthcare issue would be irrelevant now as they've all been called in to help with Covid 19. If anything, I think this might change the minds of even the most ardent NHS critics and show why the NHS is so vitally important and why it needs to be looked after and funded properly.

Darren McCaffrey - 'A 21- year- old woman with no underlying health concerns has died from #coronavirus, her family said.

Chloe Middleton is believed to be the UK’s youngest victim with no existing medical issues:'

Cancer treatment can’t have been cancelled nationwide. My family member has a mastectomy happening on Friday

kirinm · 25/03/2020 12:33

@RunningAwaywiththeCircus I'm not suggesting that the way NHS staff are being treated at the moment is anything short of disgraceful. But I'm optimistic that when this is over and people see and understand precisely what the NHS do and how its staff really do put themselves out there will make others appreciate it more. Even those Tory MPs who think private healthcare is the way to go - they must see that having potentially thousands die because the NHS literally cannot find enough medical equipment or beds to care for them, must be addressed. No one is going to come away from this thinking the NHS have let themselves down because the care people were receiving was inadequate. People will know that the NHS was overwhelmed because it didn't have the equipment they needed or beds. I hope.

Christopher Hope - 'Jeremy Corbyn: Construction workers infected with coronavirus are going to work on building sites
Boris Johnson: Construction sites should they follow the Public Health England advice on social distancing.'

Steven Swinford - 'Jeremy Corbyn raises concerns about construction workers.
'We heard this morning about a construction worker who contracted coronavirus but felt he had no other choice to go to work
'He had no other source of income to feed his family. Non emergency work should stop now.'

Angryrant55 · 25/03/2020 12:38

Tim Donovan - 'BJ won’t ban non-emergency construction work.'

Horehound · 25/03/2020 12:38

I imagine some people have underlying health conditions that they just don't know about

LittleRen · 25/03/2020 12:38

I know people who smoke heavily are more at risk of this disease - but smoking doesn't class as underlying. I do wonder if some of the people with no underlying were perhaps smokers? It doesn't seem to be getting mentioned much.

kirinm · 25/03/2020 12:42

That is fine for you though @Running but other people don't have the luxury of being able to afford insurance. We can see what an insurance based system looks like in America right now.

There is absolutely no way they will get rid of the NHS completely.

Angryrant55 · 25/03/2020 12:43

European systems will be discredited by the right who want the usa.

mrshoho · 25/03/2020 12:44

Millions will prefer the idea that if you pay you get fast tracked treatment like in america.

I don't know. I think in terms of a pandemic a set up as in the US will crumble. The 'haves' in the US up to now have had as much (too much) healthcare as they could possibly need but they are very quickly going to see unavailability in their private hospitals.

Construction sites to stay open - ‘not shutting down whole economy’

kirinm · 25/03/2020 12:44

Construction is one of the largest industries in this country and I would guess that is one of the industries that is made up largely by the self-employed? The cynical part of me thinks that the refusal to include construction work in the lockdown is either a) the impact on the economy and / or b) the amount of self employed people who will be looking to the government for support.

Ultimately, construction companies will not be able to continue when materials run out and they can't source them anymore. At some point that supply chain is going to temporarily dry up due to sickness alone.

Can anyone advise, if someone in the next garden (smallish gardens) is coughing away (wet sounding cough) and it is CV (I realise it may not be) what are the chances of aerosol reaching our garden. Would you stay indoors or is this paranoia?

defthand · 25/03/2020 12:55

Wales +150 cases + 5 deaths.

Scotland — 51 in intensive care.

defthand · 25/03/2020 12:58

@FeatherCastle

I’ve been wondering the same thing! Neighbours outside on both sides here.

I read a study that indicated it could travel 4.5m when someone coughed on a bus. It’s a very small, light virus.

I imagine it can float and hang in the air for some time, but you’d be unlucky.
