This pandemic may be short

I wanted to share with you the article published today in the Times. Professor Levit a Nobel prize winner no less, and a mathematical genius has estimated after looking at the numbers that this pandemic will be short, and can be controlled. If we observe the restrictions now we can expect it to be over quickly.

The whole world of medicine is working on an antidote, there have been some very encouraging progress, the vaccine is being tested now (after skipping other stages because it is so urgent)

There is every reason to believe that this is not going to be the new normal, but a short blip until we are able to get find a solution. The world economy is banking on a quick fix, so lets hope it will be with us soon.
WE may change in the process, the country may change in many ways after this, but this is not going to be our lives forever.

We should prepare mentally for a long lockdown, but for those that need at least a flicker of hope that we will be peaking soon, and back on the downward trajectory and back to some sort of normal, there is science behind that as well. Look at HK, China and S.Korea.

Pandemics may become regular, or this may never happen again, but the sun is shining this morning and we are all well enough to post on here.

I'll take any positives going, thankyou

Butterymuffin · 24/03/2020 10:13

Good news indeed and don't we need it! Thanks OP!
We really need to stay positive while at the same time not taking risks and being reckless out of a sense of misplaced positivity and 'it won't stop me living my life'. It can be done. We will get through, and hopefully more quickly than expected.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 24/03/2020 10:20

Isn't it amazing that this thread, one really worthy of being talked about, is only just over 100 posts... and the negative, name-calling threads quickly get filled up?

I've reported your post to MNHQ, OP to ask if they will sticky it to the top of the board. It's such a good and intelligent resource and we really need this right now. Star

Skeletoninatutu · 24/03/2020 10:22

Echoing many other posters - thank you this is very heartening

vegas888 · 24/03/2020 10:22

People should watch this

Crunched · 24/03/2020 10:23

Thank you for this cornishdreams 1. If we can successfully follow the new arrangements for a while, there is a light at the end of the tunnel.

cornishdreams1 · 24/03/2020 10:27

Well an hour and 23 minutes into the homeschool session and the children are running amok Grin I came on here to check, and thank you all for such kind replies. Maybe we should all try and share some good news every day to keep us going.

Thank you Lying really kind, and hope you are all having more luck with the educating of the young than I am today!!! I am wondering if I can treat us all to a half day?? With it being a Wednesday, what do you think?

I agree. So nice not to have a thread without ill-informed posters berating others for having the temerity to go and buy FOOD and telling them they’re as bad as those who want to go to the pub.

Right, Lying?

Hypocrite.

vegas888 · 24/03/2020 10:29

The Doctor, who is a medical disease expert, says it’s been worse in China and parts of Italy due to their high pollution levels. What he said was all very interesting.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 24/03/2020 10:30

Which I didn't actually say, Forza, but you go on and name-call all you like. I won't mind. :)

cornishdreams1 · 24/03/2020 10:31

Oh my, its not even Wednesday!!!! I have lost all sense of time already - I am living in my very own time zone here.

Hope all is going well for all of you Flowers

Dongdingdong · 24/03/2020 11:02

My DH is an engineer so maths is part of his forte and he bored me to tears last week harping on about exponential growth. In layman’s terms, every country will hit a peak (Italy has sadly already hit that with catastrophic consequences) then it will decline which is happening in Italy right now. This will happen all over the world, every country will seem to get worse before it gets better but it won’t last forever, these things never do.

Well, yes - I don't think you need an expert to tell you that. It's common knowledge.

Thanks for this OP - good to read something hopeful for a change. For what it's worth I agree with him - I don't think it's going to be nearly as bad as the doom-mongers are hoping saying.

oldwhyno · 24/03/2020 11:06

Had a conference call with somebody in Hangzhou this morning. Life returning to normal apparently. Although he did offer to send me masks as they have thousands! Confused

twosoups1972 · 24/03/2020 11:10

OP, I think I love you Grin

I get The Times and will read the article later. Thank you for sharing. Keep safe everyone.

widdioisright · 24/03/2020 11:18

Thank you for this. What a refreshing change.

I hide all the negative threads, have never seen so many and all full of “experts”.Hilarious really as their opinions are irrelevant.

UYScuti · 24/03/2020 11:21

Starve it to death and then sell off the corpse
That is exactly what they're doing to the NHS isn't it ☹️

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 24/03/2020 11:23

Trouble is- it’s not working. People claiming it “helps them prepare” appear the most unable to listen to reason and fact. If you dare suggest things will go back to normal they act like a child having its teddy forcibly taken away. It’s disturbing.
(Caveat- I’m not referring to people outlining the factual risks or stats. I’m referring to people peddling the end of the world scenario, lockdown will last until 2378, nothing will ever be normal again etc- those people).

I've been encountering those people in the most unlikely places, and the thing is, what happens if the majority of the population starts to think that way? It's not exactly creating a mindset conducive to cooperation with the guidelines needed to minimize the spread of the virus and keep healthcare systems functioning. It reminds me a lot of the evangelicals who were obsessed with being raptured a decade or so ago - maybe the End of Days thing is just baked into some people and finds new outlets over times.

UYScuti · 24/03/2020 11:26

Not the elites in their bunkers and private Islands
The elites who acquired their rarefied and privileged positions by predating on the wider population
when the wider population are killed off and they emerge blinking from their bunkers they'll be in the stone age
I wonder if Jeff bezos Bill gates Mark Zuckerberg fancy life as cavemen?
I wonder how self-sufficient they are?
maybe they were able to persuade Bear Grylls to get in the bunker with them so that he can help them rebuild civilisation, so that they can have another population upon which to predate?

TheProdigalKittensReturn · 24/03/2020 11:30

The Apocalyptic players (who frankly remind me of rubber neckers on a motorway crash) should think less about Europe and more about Africa and South America. The virus running amok in the shanty towns is a genuinely horrifying scenario.

The idea of what happens when it hits Brazil in force has been preying on my mind. How do you maintain social distancing in a slum? How could anyone self isolate?

That being said, this is still not an end of days scenario. The world has seen pandemics before, the human race is not doing to be wiped out, and I'm growing increasingly irritated with the people running around trying to get everyone else to panic. Panic is not helpful, because panicking people do not on the whole behave very well towards others.

thecatsthecats · 24/03/2020 11:32

Another positive for me:

I've been struggling for a little while with migraines. Not severe, but every day since early February.

Since we've been locked down, working from home, they've almost entirely disappeared. Knew it was my bloody PITA co workers fault! Grin

I'm obviously concerned for those whose mental health will suffer as a result, but it's not all bad news on that front.

I feel better, calmer, more rested and more able to handle things from home.
