The lockdown rules don’t apply to my particular situation because:

  • I have a holiday booked and it’s in the middle of nowhere so we won’t infect anyone;
  • I’m worried about getting an overdue book fine from the library;
  • My dog has poor recall but needs off-lead exercise so I can’t stay local for walks because I live in a built-up area;
  • I need to socialise my puppy;
  • My DH wants to take the DC to see the ILs.

All seen on MN this evening. Anyone want to add to the list?

@SimonJT Going for essential medication is absolutely fine! It’s the twonks who try arguing that their roots need doing who should be staying home.

Eireni · 24/03/2020 08:05

But there many on this thread that are arguing we should be kind to people who want to go out 3 and 4 times day
How about, just don’t be a dick about it, if you can’t say it nicely don’t say anything at all etc - you can choose just not to respond. Probably best for all of our mental health to disengage with things we can’t control online anyway!

they're so used to other people shouldering part of their parenting load that they genuinely can't contemplate managing without it.
Absolutely. And household chores/admin/wifework load as well. The family described above who all went to the supermarket with an unwell 4yo because the wife doesn’t drive. It’s always men (as far as I’ve seen, NAMALT) that need someone else to manage their children whilst they WFH, noticed that?

lottieloop · 24/03/2020 08:05

The hardcore nail enthusiasts are the worst! It's proving life or death for them to decide when to risk it. God forbid they should be sat indoors with crappy looking nails shock horror. They all know that a bottle of acetone purchased from supermarket with weekly shopping could fix it as they can be soaked off at home.

I want to thump them.

And they really should think about joining the armed forces with their bravery.

If I see one more poster moaning about nails I'm going to loose my shit. Makes me so fucking angry.

IrisAtwood · 24/03/2020 08:06

This whole thing has really shone a light on those who try to do the right thing and those who just want to do what suits them.

Eireni · 24/03/2020 08:11

SimonJT can you find any local/community Facebook groups etc? Find a friend/neighbour who could collect your meds and drop them on your doorstep as you’re self isolating?

We have set up a neighbours WhatsApp just for things like this (I put notes through about 50 doors on Friday, got about 10 responses so far), I’ve found in general people are really willing to help each other out if they can. Collecting someone’s meds and dropping them off is permitted under restrictions.

Cam77 · 24/03/2020 08:16

The UK is under lockdown.
Everywhere except London where from the picture I saw this morning its still 3/4 people sharing one sq.metre of space on some underground trains.

YgritteSnow · 24/03/2020 08:17

Accusations of "being nasty" and "unkindness" so often come after the person has been challenged on their shit. My Mum is like it. Merrily saying and doing whatever she wants no matter how selfish and hurtful and then telling you how mean you are for calling her out on it. Standard.

Eireni · 24/03/2020 08:19

I think swearing at people and insulting them is unkind no matter what the target did, tbh.

ACoupleofPeaches · 24/03/2020 08:20

This whole thing has really shone a light on those who try to do the right thing and those who just want to do what suits them.

I genuinly don't think it does. A brief past in human behaviour means I know that what people SAY and what they DO are very different and some of the most vocal about their 'morals' are more likely to break them because it for them good behaviour can often be linked to be seeing to be good, vs the actual morality at stake.

I might be one of those people would think is just doing what they like because I've stood up for those asking questions. In reality, I have been at home totally and utterly with the exception of one dog walk a day for the last week or so because I am one of the "vulnerable". These new rules don't actually change my life, but I can empathise with those for whom they have.

Squashpocket · 24/03/2020 08:20

I have a horrible feeling that the style of lockdown Wuhan implemented was put in place for a reason I.e. that is what works - anything less strict and people will find a way round it. I predict we'll see a steady tightening of rules until either the epidemic slows down or the general public starts rioting, whichever comes first.

bigbadoldbag · 24/03/2020 08:22

I've no issue with people working through the things that are important to them, although more common sense could be applied but this!!! This is what makes me furious!

Oblomov20 · 24/03/2020 08:23

I find people's stupidity frightening.

No, keep your dog on a lead. They don't need to be off a lead. A quick walk will suffice.

Do you really need to ask about library fines. It's hardly life critical. Even if you did get a 50 pence fine, would it really matter?

I think I better self isolate a bit more! HmmWink

Tanith · 24/03/2020 08:28

I think a good number of the sillier queries are from trolls and bored teenagers.

Jourdain11 · 24/03/2020 08:32

@Squashpocket The problem is, though, this is a nation that until very recently told its citizens how many children they could have. The barricades in the street, welding doors shut and so on, was not nice to see. There was a sad article about a disabled boy who died because nobody came to feed him (cannot find atm, but it was on the BBC).

Stellaris22 · 24/03/2020 08:40

The off lead thing is true.

I am usually 100% for dogs running around, socialising. Since we've put ourselves in isolation, and for the foreseeable future, ours will remain on lead, no socialising whatsoever. The dogs are fine, I don't trust people.

mbosnz · 24/03/2020 09:00

I was about to say, we're very lucky, we're not special at all. None of us.

Then daughter bellowed up the stairs that the sink was blocked. DH is currently out looking for a plunger. . . perfect fucking timing as ever!

ThanosSavedMe · 24/03/2020 10:38

For all those people who think this is a mean thread, it think most people can tell the difference between a genuine query and someone who really thinks that they are exempt from the rules because of A B C

Someone asking about being able to look after their horses seems genuine to me.

Someone asking about whether they can still go to their holiday cottage isn’t

HopeMumsnet · 24/03/2020 11:13

Hi all,
We've swithered over whether to keep this one or not, because on the one hand it doesn't seem in the spirit to pick such specific examples but on the other hand we know (because we are in the same boat) that venting about seeming daftnesses can help.

(Not that we think the things mentioned are automatically daft. )

We think what we're going to do is leave it for now, but with one eye on getting back on track for the spirit of the site, which is (we would fervently hope) built on supporting each other through hard times. And sadly these last few days and what may be in front of us seem like the hardest, so that MN spirit will be much needed.

Peace and love, strength and wisdom, gin and pombears. x

PerkingFaintly · 24/03/2020 11:48

And a bonus Gin to you, HopeMumsnet, for use of the word "swithered".Grin

GeraldtheGorilla · 24/03/2020 12:01

I’m not special but my dog is 😂

Actually am a dog-owner and the little princess thinks the world revolves around her (normally it does)! Already looking at me like I’m evil because her routine has changed.

She will definitely not be happy when I have to cut her meal sizes due to reduced exercise.

But, she will get used to it and hopefully I’ll still be alive to give her a happy life after all this. However, if I do have to resort to cutting her hair myself she may be too ashamed to go out in public.

SnoozyLou · 24/03/2020 12:05

I was hoping to get my cat neutered, but I guess this is divine intervention 🤔

He looks so smug. And yes, he's on lockdown too, before anyone starts.

turkeyontheplate · 24/03/2020 12:25

@bumblingbovine49 don't let anyone tell you that keeping that appointment isn't essential. Of course it bloody is. Wishing you a positive outcome, from one parent of a young person with dodgy mental health to another Flowers

FuriousFlannels · 24/03/2020 13:16

And yes, he's on lockdown too, before anyone starts.

Interesting question - how many cat owners are keeping their cats indoors for this?

PotholeParadise · 24/03/2020 13:38

Do you really need

50 pence per book, per day, mate.

Stellaris22 · 24/03/2020 14:03

I would check with your library as ours have frozen accounts so people don't get fines.
