The lockdown rules don’t apply to my particular situation because:

  • I have a holiday booked and it’s in the middle of nowhere so we won’t infect anyone;
  • I’m worried about getting an overdue book fine from the library;
  • My dog has poor recall but needs off-lead exercise so I can’t stay local for walks because I live in a built-up area;
  • I need to socialise my puppy;
  • My DH wants to take the DC to see the ILs.

All seen on MN this evening. Anyone want to add to the list?

@Eireni I had to cancel my wedding this weekend and I’m in the ‘shielded’ group who have to stay 3 paces away from their own small children. Absolutely I will laugh at the absolutely knuckleheads who think they’re so amazingly special that they can risk my life and the lives of the HCPs and other truly essential workers to get their sodding nails done.

People do have genuine queries that are tricky to answer, especially when they’re worried and not thinking straight. These aren’t some of them.

Genuine question. Have a new puppy, needs his last injections so he can be walked. If he doesn’t get them then he can never go outside. Will I be able to go to the vets because surely this could be life or death for the dog?

Vets will be working - they'll advise you if this is essential to do now or if it can wait. Anything any MNer who isn't a vet says is irrelevant.

mochajoes · 23/03/2020 23:24

it's worse when you see the "I went to the shop to get milk & the shop was packed, we need to social distance". "Went for my usual run & couldn't do it properly as the park was full, how stupid are other people?". "I cannot believe that when I went to the local beauty spot it was so busy!" posts.

They are the same people who complain about tourists when they travel to Venice, etc! 🙄

TheoriginalLEM · 23/03/2020 23:24

@TheWildRumpyPumpus I hadn't thought of that scenario. That really IS a ball ache. There are going to be so many things that will cause genuine hardship.

hopsalong · 23/03/2020 23:26

What about 'because I already have immunity'? Not me, I don't, I'm sick with some illness or other but who knows which. I've been locked down for a while.

A friend was diagnosed two / three weeks ago in Germany, had fairly minimal symptoms, and is now told by his doctor that (after making a complete recovery) he has immunity for at least six months. Given that he can't contract or more importantly (he's early 30s) transmit the virus, and is in sort of an unusual position in this way (because so few tests done here and mostly on very ill people), would it be OK for him to volunteer to get shopping etc for elderly neighbours, pop in to have a chat with them etc??

LaurieFairyCake · 23/03/2020 23:31

I go to work in a school

My dog has daycare

Ergo: My dogs daycare has closed down

The children I see don't get seen 🤷‍♀️

That's tomorrow for me Sad

NSA2103 · 23/03/2020 23:32

Can I still go to B&Q? - cracked me up.

TheoriginalLEM · 23/03/2020 23:33

@ErrolTheDragon I work in a vets and we will still be vaccinating puppies and kittens (or at least that was decided by management today) we will not however be doing yearly boosters, seeing anyone without a telephone appointment and then we will be expecting owners to remain outside the practice while the animal is treated. There will be no routine surgery and repeat medication will be delivered, with only controlled drugs requiring face to face hand over.

Contrary to popular belief, a nail trim is NOT an emergency and you will no longer be able to do this.

There will be no nurses clinics and all payments will be taken in advance over the phone.

We will be operating on skeleton staff and we have infection control down to a fine art.

We will still be here for your furry people. Please help us to continue by not turning up to the practice unannounced unless it is a life or death scenario. We are not key workers so we do not want to lose the ability to treat unwell/injured animals.

PerkingFaintly · 23/03/2020 23:34

Yeah, I'm very interested to see what happens with recovered people and immunity. Also, whether people with immunity can still end up as carriers.

I'm sure all the different possible answers are being modelled mathematically as we speak.

TheoriginalLEM · 23/03/2020 23:35

NSA hardware stores are apparently in the list of stores that can remain open. I can't fathom that either Grin

A member of my immediate family is a practicing small animal vet. Up to today, the surgery has been operating as normal. Following Boris’s announcement the BVA will be issuing guidelines on how practices should work during the lockdown. The expectation is that elective work, eg neutering, will be suspended but vets will continue to see animals which need treatment. Ring your vet tomorrow, the guidelines should be published by then.

TheoriginalLEM · 23/03/2020 23:39

Although if he misses his vaccination he won't have to quarantined forever , just until he finally gets his jabs.

Eireni · 23/03/2020 23:41

What about 'because I already have immunity'?
This is why we need testing widely available ASAP.

OP it’s not bloody top trumps as to who is most affected gets to be more unkind to others. Be angry, fair enough I think we’re all angry right now (and shocked and sad and despairing and panicking and in denial.....like a stages-of-grief version of the seven dwarves) but be angry at the govt for being so bloody slow off the mark and leaving so many unclarified situations - really obvious ones like garages, shared residences for children etc. It’s confusing and scary and people are just posting on the internet ffs, not breaking in and licking your children.

TheoriginalLEM · 23/03/2020 23:44

Totally agree eirini regarding testing. Although Boris said something interesting in his speech "We will be ordering xxxx testing kits" Hmm they under ordered didn't they. They seriously underestimated this!!

ErrolTheDragon · 23/03/2020 23:44

Hardware shops do sell some stuff that's needed for essential repairs (plumbing disaster type of thing). The problem with places like B&Q is that most of their stuff isn't of that sort.

DMJ6789 · 23/03/2020 23:45

My mother is because she has “paid in”
All her life. Does my head in when she comes out with this shit. She worked full time for about 8 years and retired at 55.

ThanksForAllTheFish · 23/03/2020 23:53

My mum genuinely needs to go to the stable yard every day to care for her elderly horse. Grass isn’t through yet so not possible for the horses to live out 24/7 yet as they would have nothing to eat - this also leads to fighting and possibly horses trying to escape and getting tangled up in fences. He also has arthritis that requires daily supplements and medication to keep him mobile. It’s too cold overnight (Scotland) at the moment for him to be out all the time. Hopefully spring grass and warmer nights will be here soon but until then he does need daily stable cleaning /water /food etc.

But yeah obviously there are zero exceptions to the rules on mumsnet. She should obviously just neglect him and leave him in his stable or field hungry and uncared for.

iVampire · 23/03/2020 23:53

Will I be able to go to the vets because surely this could be life or death for the dog?

Vets are one of the businesses classed as essential, so I think you should be able to get the jabs (in same way that NHS has suspended many procedures but still does baby jabs)

I just hope I can still pop in to get puppy weighed so I can get the correct dose flea/worm and tapeworm treatment. I could buy online if they won’t see us for that, but I’d rather support the practice bu buying from them

VirtualHugsAllRound · 24/03/2020 00:06

iVampire
Is there no way to weigh your puppy at home? You can weigh yourself holding him/her then weigh yourself again without....?

TheoriginalLEM · 24/03/2020 00:08

IVampire you can weigh your puppy at home but we will absolutely not be seeing people for this reason. Happy to advise over the phone but probably better for you to buy online. Although prescription flea products require a prescription so might be an idea to see if your vets will deliver. We have been delivering flea products however it not considered critical medication and the latest ruling from the BVA states these can no longer be supplied.

Call your practice, they will help - you do not need to go there , please follow advice

Nitpickpicnic · 24/03/2020 00:22

A school mum is insisting on keeping multiple dental appointments (in a clinic where they work on several patients at once, in a sort of ‘ward’) because she wants her daughter’s braces and expander off by September. Logic being that unless regular adjustments are made, they’ll be on until Xmas.

It’s just vanity, the kid would be fine. But mummy is insisting she doesn’t want braces in the Xmas photos.

NuclearWinter · 24/03/2020 00:31

This is a really really unpleasant thread. People are just trying to understand and get their heads around the most serious threat we’ve faced for decades, restrictions to life more severe than during wartime, and you post a thread to laugh at people struggling to get their heads around it all. Nice.

Totally agree. working through scenarios as part of the acceptance process is entirely normal.

TeaAndDarkToast · 24/03/2020 00:42

This is a very unpleasant thread.

I only asked about library books because I wanted to know about fines not because I wanted to leave the house. I am glad about the lockdown and it should have happened weeks ago.
