All the people suddenly desperate to do daily exercise

Do you normally exercise every day? If not, then just surely exercise as normal, maybe jog on the spot or do some star jumps at home
Okay if you live in a flat and want fresh air, but if not then just go in your garden surely.

It's not forever.

Yes I run a lot, very grateful I can still do this for my mental health. I also do the Les Mills on Demand workouts at home (had to adapt after my daughter was born as no longer had the time to go to fitness studios). Miss my hot yoga though.

Just hope people don't take the absolute piss with the new rules though.

ThursdayLastWeek · 23/03/2020 22:04

Fitness blender is good for home workouts.

I’m happy to live fairly rurally and able to run without seeing anyone.

And I will be desperate to get out alone to get away from my kids! Star jumps wouldn’t have quite the same impact.

Hollywhiskey · 23/03/2020 22:29

I can't believe we can only go out once to exercise. I usually go 2/3 per day including running and walking with my kids. Now I will have to choose between my kids getting out and my own mental health. For what it's worth, I live rurally and can (and have been) easily following the rules on social distancing while I work out.
Jogging in place isn't meaningful exercise.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 23/03/2020 22:31

Hollywhiskey - your need to exercise doesn't trump someone else's need to live

BuffaloCauliflower · 23/03/2020 22:32

I would normally walk on average 9000 steps day (can be a bit more or less) as part of my commute, as well as couple of yoga/Pilates classes a week. The walking is what I need the most to just feel generally healthy, so I’ll need to ensure I still do at least some of it even though I’m not actually going anywhere

Hereforthenamethreads · 23/03/2020 22:34

Of course I exercise once a day especially if we are counting walking as exercising. I walk several times a day to get places, often just go for a walk and run a few times a week.

Hollywhiskey · 23/03/2020 22:39

@ladytiredwinterbottom I didn't say it did. I have absolutely been following the rules up to this point. I have not been in any gyms or busy parks.
I have attempted suicide before and physical exercise was the single most important thing in getting my mental health back. I still haven't suggested I break any rules.

ChickLitLover · 23/03/2020 22:47

Grin It’s strange that so many people who are usually quite lazy and stay in a lot are suddenly needing to exercise and get out more. It’s like dealing with kids, tell them they can’t have something and they NEEEEEEEEED IT NOW!

We’re all going to have to make changes. It doesn’t matter if you normally do stuff, we’re in the middle of the biggest health crisis any of us have ever seen and you are going to have to get used to a new normal. And sharpish.

Tightsonatrain · 23/03/2020 22:50

I think not having a garden is driving a lot this!

Please think of those of us stuck in crappy London flats 😭

FuckOffCorona · 23/03/2020 22:53

Lots of people exercise outdoors regularly and for many it’s absolutely essential to their mental and physical well-being. That’s why it’s still allowed. People with sedentary lifestyles probably can’t imagine why it’s so important, but they shouldn’t assume it would be inconsequential to just shut that avenue of self-care down when it’s a lifeline for a lot of people.

Olawisk · 23/03/2020 22:56

@Hollywhiskey your suggesting your mental health is more important then other people’s lives. It’s not. Go out ONCE. Rules are clear, your not an exception or special.

RHTawneyonabus · 23/03/2020 22:56

So people can’t use this as an opportunity to get fitter then? Why on earth should some who already runs every day be allowed out but someone who has just started not be able to? It’s completely illogical.

I’ve started to run. It’s not my thing but I’d normally walk miles on the school run to the shops etc and I have to replace those steps somehow!

Olawisk · 23/03/2020 22:57

@FuckOffCorona - they can still work out - once a day. The rules really are simple.

Maryann1975 · 23/03/2020 22:57

Yep, there’s a couple of people on my fb who are taking Up running and have started the couch to 5k thing today. They don’t normally do any exercise. Why they think now is the best time to take up running I will never Understand. Hopefully they don’t give themselves a heart attack in the process, one in particular is very, very unfit and would do better to change their diet substantially before they start a major exercise plan. I normally walk about 3 miles a day (which is around 10000 steps for me). With no school runs, there will be no chance of me getting that amount in, but I hope I can still go for a walk around the local estate every day for a bit of fresh air.

SuperFurryDoggy · 23/03/2020 22:58

I live on the outskirts of a massive, massive forest. I walk my dog 3-5 miles every day, usually without seeing a soul.

I have definitely noticed more people over the past days, although I’ve only had to switch path once. Mostly older people who are probably driving up from the surrounding villages to get a bit more space around them I suppose.

Lynda07 · 23/03/2020 22:59

It's not just London that has flats, most towns and cities do.

Flats are lovely and very convenient for busy working people but in this very unusual situation I imagine it could be prison-like for anyone who gets stir crazy and has no personal outdoor space, even a little one.

What about communal gardens which many blocks of flats have? As long as there aren't many people out there and those that are keep distance, that would surely be alright. Or even the car park.

I'm just thinking out loud, it's such an awful situation for everyone but more so for some.

Fozzleyplum · 23/03/2020 23:02

The rule is very simple. You can go out to exercise once a day. That applies whether you are a regular runner, starting couch to 5k, or going for a daily walk. Why do people always have to make special cases of themselves? People need to wind their necks in and stick to the rules until this thing is sorted.

Fozzleyplum · 23/03/2020 23:04

And,OP, perhaps if people are more constrained than usual, for example by not being allowed to travel to work, why shouldn't they go for a walk, provided they observe proper distancing?

Pippitypong · 23/03/2020 23:07

We did joe wicks pe class this morning, and then went for a short run with my DS. Tomorrow we'll prob do joe wicks again and I'll do my own run. I run 4 times a week, usually, but I very rarely stay a whole day indoors.

shinynewapple2020 · 23/03/2020 23:30

I normally walk my dog each day.

I imagine the additional people that posters are seeing out exercising would normally be at work so would be moving around on their commute or perhaps going to the gym

I found it very quiet when I took my dog out this afternoon as I would normally bump into people doing school run. Also park by me nearly deserted

FlorencesHunger · 23/03/2020 23:56

I imagine a lot of people will be using running or walking as an alternative to their now unaccessible exercise routine or just for their own sanity. Where I live and where I run is not likely to be congested but if I am to see people them I will take a wide berth of them, simple.

I started gym running a month ago then had a non running injury that prevented me from doing it, so attempted swimming. Now they are shut and my injury gone I am left with outdoor running, fresh air, spring and healthy body and mind exercise.

I have gym equipment at home already that I could use but while I have the option to run then I will, not planning on every day though.

ErrolTheDragon · 24/03/2020 00:08

I started the walking/running/whatever challenge (there's a thread or two) at the start of jan. I've clocked up over 400km so far, mostly in 5km walks. That's actual deliberate walks, distance according to cumulative step counts would be more.

ChickLitLover · 24/03/2020 01:12

Now I will have to choose between my kids getting out and my own mental health.

If there’s any choice here, it’s between people living or people dying, the NHS coping or the NHS being overwhelmed, not you going running or walking with your kids.

I’m sorry you’re struggling with mental health issues, many people are but this is bigger than any individual needs. We all have to follow the rules.

Designerenvy · 24/03/2020 01:15

Maybe because everything else is closed, people are stressed out of their heads and need some release ?
Yes, YABU and judgemental .

Designerenvy · 24/03/2020 01:16

Sorry, thought this was in AIBU thread, but my sentiment is the same .
