There's speculation that he will implement a full lockdown.

How will this differ from what we're doing now?

‘We don’t all have a block’

Give me strength.

Thekindofwindowsfaceslookinat · 23/03/2020 21:46

It'smybirthday You're being plain daft. One side of the hedge - a wood with people walking, running and cycling. On the other side of the hedge, me with my spade digging because that's the exercise I prefer.

Save your venom for the people that will try to have house parties and stag do's on beaches, for fuck's sake.

Itsmybirthdaytoday20 · 23/03/2020 21:47

I’m not being daft at all. You’re being plain stupid and plain selfish.

Thekindofwindowsfaceslookinat · 23/03/2020 21:50

You’re being plain stupid and plain selfish

Go on. Why? Explain how me, on one side of the hedge, digging on my own is 'plain stupid and selfish' but I put my spade down and jumped over the hedge to run in the woods, that would acceptable.

You really need to spell out why I'm endangering someone more than the eight people that just jogged past my hedge, when I'm alone, digging.

PollyPocketLucyLocket · 23/03/2020 21:53

I don't see the issue with being at the allotment.
I'm sure guidance will come out about this anyhow. Perhaps the local council will update their websites about it?

supercee · 23/03/2020 21:57

The difference is if you're gardening in your own garden it's your garden, the only people accessing it is the people you live with, the people who you are allowed to mix with.

An allotment is something outwith, and whilst it might solely belong to you, or be in close vicinity, can you absolutely guarantee that no one else has accessed it, went through the gate etc.

Thekindofwindowsfaceslookinat · 23/03/2020 21:59

Yes. We have the only key. It is a stand-alone plot surrounded by 6 foot hedges.

FecktheBoss · 23/03/2020 22:01

I have an allotment, it's a 2/3 min walk from the house. Only one gate in and out, but the plots are big enough to observe the 2 metres and we will be taking precautions such as wearing gloves etc.

I will be going as last year we grew so much that we were giving it to our elderly neighbours to save it from going to waste. If we can save them from having to go out for fresh veg, then we will be carrying on.

MarshaBradyo · 23/03/2020 22:03

I don’t get why an allotment is so bad. You are on your own part of it, distanced. Good for mh, exercise and sone food. Just the gate to remember.

Thekindofwindowsfaceslookinat · 23/03/2020 22:04

That's good to hear. We usually have a 'Share Our Spare' initiative from June/July onwards to give fresh veg and fruit to anyone who needs it.

MarshaBradyo · 23/03/2020 22:04

Copying directly from another thread

Jane Merrick - 'Allotment people: I’ve had it confirmed that going to the allotment does count as your one exercise per day. Just NO gathering with others.'

Thekindofwindowsfaceslookinat · 23/03/2020 22:06

Brilliant, thanks for that Marsha. We've emailed the council to check too.

Froq · 23/03/2020 22:06

Can’t believe it needs spelling out this much.

If it’s not on the list, it’s not allowed.

Boris doesn’t give a shit about Sharon’s allotment.

‘WoT if I run to the hairdressers and back does that count as 1 exercise?‘

I hope the police are strict with fining people.

GabsAlot · 23/03/2020 22:07

i ho0pe the kids/teens bloody listen to this i read the army is onstandby but doubt we'll all see them

Flaxmeadow · 23/03/2020 22:07

Actually talking of cycling many will be delighted to no longer have packs of cyclists tearing around their roads anymore

Dont bet on it

There are now boy racers in powerful souped up cars tearing around the main roads here and chasing each other. The police are doing absolutley nothing to deal with it. This has been happening for at least 3 nights now and what makes it worse is they're weaving in and out of trucks trying to deliver food

MarshaBradyo · 23/03/2020 22:08

Froq it’s an important question for people. I don’t get the ire. Can they or not and then if yes is a good way to exercise and improve mh.

Thekindofwindowsfaceslookinat · 23/03/2020 22:10

Froq gardening is the exercise itself. It's an accessible form of exercise for people who are unable to undertake other types of exercise.

It's not running to the hairdressers. It's really very different.

Firsttimelottie · 23/03/2020 22:12

I was going to continue using my allotment. It's a full plot. Well over 2m from our only neighbour who we rarely see anyway. The allotments are hidden in a secluded wooden area. One large shared gate though - I was planning on sanitizing my hands before and after using the gate.

Tbh it never occurred to me that I should stop going there Confused not sure if I'm being naive?

BuckingFrolics · 23/03/2020 22:15

Ok so when I said not nearly enough, I'd have expected Johnson using clearer firmer language, less of the "it makes sense" and "please ensure" and more of the "we will all from midnight have to ....".

Clarity about airports shutting. About how long exercise is. About who this "one other person" is who we can meet outside. Markers on floors of supermarkets. Statement on second homes/hol homes.

SouthWestmom · 23/03/2020 22:15

I hope they have some plans for dealing with the mental health stuff that will come up. I can already feel myself panicking/feeling like it's the end of everything several times a day before this. And my mental health was okay beforehand. It's a fine line between the two.

Matildathehun77 · 23/03/2020 22:17

The rules say you can exercise once a day but don't say for how long..... could going to the allotment be considered that exercise period? If there's no contact with any other people I can't see the harm.

supercee · 23/03/2020 22:18

If you can undertake 2 hours of gardening what other exercise can't you do? A bit of walking?

I'm not on an anti-allotmenteur crusade (fuck I'd love one myself) but I feel what the government means doesn't mean spending a couple of hours in one's allotment.

It's like all the ones on my local FB page - 'yes we went to the local ridiculously busy beach but we honestly never came into contact with anyone whilst we had a picnic and drank champagne on the packed beach. What did we do wrong?!

Go for a quick walk, then stay in. It's only for a short period of time.

Froq · 23/03/2020 22:23

The point is: why do you need someone to spell it out for you?

Use common sense, assess the necessity of the trip/action and potential for contact with others and then make a judgment call.

Boris can’t exactly list every single thing that people can and cannot do: Sharon can go the allotments on Wednesdays and Dave can do drop offs providing he doesn’t go inside.

Thekindofwindowsfaceslookinat · 23/03/2020 22:25

Oh God. I know I said two hours. It's not gospel. It might be 30 minutes. It might be an hour. It might be 20 minutes.

I feel what the government means doesn't mean spending a couple of hours in one's allotment

Why do you feel that? Some people with physical limitations rely completely on allotmenteering for their exercise.

It's exercise. It's allowed. Exercise is allowed. The only issue here is whether some posters believe that digging etc. in an allotment is a form of exercise. They should try it. It is.

Thekindofwindowsfaceslookinat · 23/03/2020 22:26

The point is: why do you need someone to spell it out for you?

I don't. Exercise is allowed. My exercise is digging my allotment over. If I had a dog with me instead of a spade, it would be okay, apparently.
