Booking multiple delivery slots is pretty selfish?

Yorvictor130 · 22/03/2020 23:05

I think it’s actually on par with the panic buyers.

I see so many MNetters saying they have reserved a slot every week for online food delivery, is this not just as selfish as panic buying hundreds of toilet rolls? Why do you get to hog all the delivery slots. It seems to be something that people let slide on here.

Nobody can get a delivery slot for the foreseeable now and there’s people with multiple ones all to themselves. Is there not something wrong with that?

Ocado was advising everyone to do this earlier this week...

AccidentsAhoy · 22/03/2020 23:09

One a week is a normal amount surely?

If it was one a day I'd agree but I've had a delivery saver pass for years and always booked a Friday delivery every week

I still have all Fridays booked.

Not that it means much as 50% of my shopping hasn't turned up the last few weeks.

AccidentsAhoy · 22/03/2020 23:09

Plus I'm in isolation so can't go to the shops physically.

playthestation · 22/03/2020 23:11

I don't think there is much wrong with people buying shopping once a week.

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 22/03/2020 23:12

It’s not selfish if they order 1x a week for a normal weekly shop.

It’s only selfish if they are ordering 100 toilet roll, 90 tinned tomatoes etc

Yorvictor130 · 22/03/2020 23:12

In normal circumstances pre Coronavirus then that’d be fine.

It’s definitely something the government needs to address, ensuring the population have access to food at all times.

But in the meantime, I don’t see why people can’t for example do a two weekly delivery shop (I regularly did fortnightly food shops anyway) rather than clogging up weekly slots which people could really really do with.

It seems like some of us have it all whereas the others have nothing.

I’ve always had my shopping delivered once a week on a Sunday so yes I have delivery slots booked once a week for as far in the future as I could. Except next weekend I couldn’t get one, managed to get a click and collect slot though.
We live in a small house with a small fridge/freezer so not sure where I’m supposed to keep everything if I had to get food for more than one week at a time?
Anyway as a pp said it doesn’t matter because both today and last week there was so much out of stock anyway

Yorvictor130 · 22/03/2020 23:13

I wish the supermarkets would only release the delivery slots for the week ahead, so everybody had equal access

OP posts:
TrashPanda · 22/03/2020 23:14

If they were booking one every day then I would agree, but one slot a week is normal surely. I have my usual Monday slot booked for the coming weeks as I normally do. I have had a weekly delivery for at least 5 years now, started when my middle child was born as I live in a first floor flat and can't safely get the shopping and children upstairs together. I can't leave the children alone in the flat to go and get shopping from the ar or leave them alone in the car to take it up. I definitely should not be taking 3 children around a supermarket at the moment either.

AccidentsAhoy · 22/03/2020 23:15

Because nothing is turning up in deliveries... So you wouldn't have enough food to last 2 weeks

Especially now everything is limited to 1, 2 or 3 items.

How does a large family ike mine (7) make 3 tins of beans, 3 tins of tomatoes stretch 2 weeks?

Especially when ALL tinned goods didn't turn up from my shop on Friday.

All my tins 'weren't available, with no appropriate substitutions'

Butterymuffin · 22/03/2020 23:16

Neither Morrisons nor Tesco had any bookable slots for the next three weeks when I looked earlier today (I use one, my parents have used the other) so this won't be a problem from here on.

Gilead · 22/03/2020 23:16

People on benefits may find it easier, people paid weekly too

Haffiana · 22/03/2020 23:18

So bored with all these 'I am jealous of everybody who has something I don't' threads.

Fucking grow up.

Yorvictor130 · 22/03/2020 23:19

I just think the slots should be available to everyone at the beginning of the week, seems more fair that everyone has access at the same time. What hope do people have now if there are so many people hoarding the delivery slots?

If you aren’t elderly/self isolating/have underlying conditions which put you at risk, I think you should be trying your best to not use up precious delivery slots. Vulnerable groups need them right now (myself included)

Everyone does have access at the same time. It doesn't matter what time the slots are released.

WinterCat · 22/03/2020 23:21

Ocado has this as a service that it provides, so you can sign up to its Reserved service to get the same weekly slot with the same regular items. Then you just go in and add whatever extra you want that week and remove anything unwanted.

We always get a weekly shop and then I used to do another midweek shop for additional fruit. Now we are getting by on online deliveries every week and a half to a fortnight.

Yorvictor130 · 22/03/2020 23:21

I don’t want to get into a sweary slagging match, debate is fine and if people disagree with me then fair enough. I just wanted to see what people thought but I’m in the minority here so fair enough. No need to resort to swearing and being aggressive

OP posts:
Yeafortwo · 22/03/2020 23:27

They're available to everyone equally though? If you wake up tomorrow morning first thing you can book a slot, albeit the first one in 3 weeks time, then you can book one every week like lots of others are. You have the same chance of booking a slot as everyone else. I have had two slots a week for the last 15 years with my Tesco pass, I now just have the one and as others said, loads of stuff missing. I'm offering to add things for friends and neighbours too so not just my shopping. I tell everyone when I have a slot and they add in, someone else does the same next time they have a slot.

SidekickSally · 22/03/2020 23:28

I stopped my regular weekly delivery - delivery slots should be reserved for those who are self-isolating in my opinion. But there are some people who think that they’re entitled to keep their regular slot every week as they’ve always had it. Of course it’s their right it’s just not the right thing to do.

Yorvictor130 · 22/03/2020 23:29

@yeafortwo

That’s a great idea, using your slot to help neighbours. This would be a huge help if people perhaps were to share delivery shops with neighbours

I have a Tesco delivery pass and only get priority access to slots at Easter and Christmas. I'm not even sure they did the Easter priority access this year.

A delivery every fortnight is impractical with the current food limits. A loaf of bread lasts 2 days here and we eat more than a pack of eggs in a fortnight. I don't think I'm unreasonable getting 1 delivery a week. I'm a single parent so if I'm ill I need this help.

Snugglepumpkin · 22/03/2020 23:30

I have had at least one weekly delivery slot booked for the past eight or so years.
I have one slot booked each week now until mid April.
Before this virus I actually used to have a delivery every 5 days or so but now I am just booking one a week.

I do not have another way to shop for things like fresh milk.

My shopping also contains things for other people who cannot get a delivery.

What is selfish about that?

Yorvictor130 · 22/03/2020 23:30

@SidekickSally
You’ve summed up what I mean a lot better!

There seems to be a lot of “well I’ve always done it this way” which is fine under normal circumstances, but we all need to make sacrifices to help each other now.

AgentPrentiss · 22/03/2020 23:31

What makes you think everyone has the money to do this? Confused

safariboot · 22/03/2020 23:34

It's not my fault Tesco's systems are shit when faced with high demand. If I don't book my slots ahead someone else will, and there's no reason to think it'll be someone more "deserving".

I don't even expect anything I've ordered to be delivered anyway. I've heard enough stories of cancellations. And if Tesco cancel my order, AFAIK I don't get any priority for a rebooking - it's back to the back of the queue for me.
