Booking multiple delivery slots is pretty selfish?

I think it’s actually on par with the panic buyers.

I see so many MNetters saying they have reserved a slot every week for online food delivery, is this not just as selfish as panic buying hundreds of toilet rolls? Why do you get to hog all the delivery slots. It seems to be something that people let slide on here.

Nobody can get a delivery slot for the foreseeable now and there’s people with multiple ones all to themselves. Is there not something wrong with that?

I just wanted to see what people thought but I’m in the minority here so fair enough. No need to resort to swearing and being aggressive

I'm not sure you can oust using emotive language like selfish, hoarding, hog, on par with panic shoppers and then complain that people get emotional back tbh

On topic, I am not convinced most people are doing anything extreme - either in shops or online.

Yes, there are the twats buying twenty tins of SMA but I suspect most people are just doing a high end of normal (for them) shop and it's that that is putting pressure on the system. People who sometimes buy six tins of beans one week but then none for a couple of weeks are buying six now. But then are also buying their top end amounts of everything. The collective effect of everyone doing this is that stock levels cannot keep up.

Online shopping is obviously taking a hit because of all the new customers but I don't think those sticking to ordering sensible amounts on their normal slot are doing anything extreme.

Thanks the trouble with the "don't panic buy - there's enough for everyone" message. No one will identify with it and assume acting normally is the right thing to do.

If there is not enough for everyone then we'd better change the messaging pretty sharpish.

NuclearWinter · 23/03/2020 06:44

If the guidelines from the government is to just shop normally because there are no shortages - plenty of goods in production - then why is sticking to a normal weekly booking wrong?

bellinisurge · 23/03/2020 06:46

I always do this. Or did this. There are no more slots for me to book.

fruitpastille · 23/03/2020 07:03

Until recently on a tiny percentage of supermarket shopping was online. Of course they can't cope now. I anticipated the rush and had a delivery on Friday but must say I felt a bit guilty about it as nobody in my household is classed as vulnerable. I will stick to going to the shop for now. If we have to self isolate we have plenty of food in as we are lucky to have a it of storage space. My Brexit pasta has become the Corona pasta!

mochajoes · 23/03/2020 07:35

Why are the supermarkets in Spain, Italy & Germany well stocked?

definitelygc · 23/03/2020 07:39

I stopped my regular weekly delivery - delivery slots should be reserved for those who are self-isolating in my opinion.

I did the same. Otherwise how will people like my parents get food now they can't leave the house? I know the government is trying to organise these care packages but we still don't even know how that will work yet.

Conrad79 · 23/03/2020 07:39

This whole thing has gone mad. I used to get my food delivered by Sainsbury’s but decided not to for the last 3 weeks to help others.

I have a delivery pass I’m not using!

I’m Happy to sacrifice for those in need Smile despite having chronic asthma & MS

FixTheBone · 23/03/2020 07:50

@Yorvictor130

absolutely no way this could work for us.

I've booked every Sunday morning for the forseeable, we have 7 children and 2 adults in our house. Our 'regular' weekly shop is 170 items, plus we often need to get perishables during the week.

If, as you suggest we booked 2 weeks in one go, we wouldn't be able to order the quantities we needed of some items, we certainly wouldnt have space to store the fridge/freezer items, and we'd need to venture out several times per week to keep the family fed.

YgritteSnow · 23/03/2020 11:08

Does anyone know why we can't book future slots on Ocado?

Petiolaris · 23/03/2020 11:22

Tesco now has no slots after Sun 12th. It should have rolled over to Mon 13th by now. I wonder if they’re stopping people booking deliveries?

Redwinestillfine · 23/03/2020 13:09

I have had a delivery booked for 13 at Tesco for a few days....Do you have a delivery saver? Maybe they're opened to pass holders first ( or maybe it's a location thing??)

Knowhowufeel2 · 23/03/2020 14:10

No online supermarket seems to have delivery dates past 13th April where I am, and all the dates that are shown are fully booked already, and no new dates are being released.

One of them released one extra day yesterday and that was booked solid after an hour or so. I managed to get a slot for the 13th, but would really have rather had one for the beginning of May, but I was too worried to pass this slot up in case I, or my vulnerable parents, can't get another one (I'm doing their shop as well as mine).

I've no idea how I'm meant to secure further slots.

Just for this recent shop my 'trolley' had been full for well over a week, and I'm still trying to book for the beginning of May, but there's no chance.

goingoverground · 23/03/2020 14:40

@YgritteSnow I believe it is to stop people panic block booking/booking slots that they don't really need.

itsgettingweird · 23/03/2020 14:44

I pat Asda delivery pass. I have allocated slot each week. Always have done.

I have it for personal reasons.

Sallycinnamum · 23/03/2020 15:00

I've booked a Tesco delivery up to 16 April yesterday but when I checked this morning the slots only go up to the 12th. Not sure why that is.

ChipotleBlessing · 23/03/2020 15:10

@Conrad79 if you’re going to shops instead of getting the delivery with those conditions which make you more vulnerable, you are not helping out. Helping out is social distancing as appropriate for your risk group, it’s not just about your individual risk it’s about avoiding overwhelming the NHS

Conrad79 · 23/03/2020 15:20

Thank you for the concern but I haven’t been going into supermarkets and I’ve maintained social distancing for 7 days now Smile

ZarkingBell · 23/03/2020 15:49

The reason I use ocado reserved is because I have underlying issues and the food comes every week from a warehouse so fewer substitutions. In addition to my health issues I have food allergies and autistic children with narrow diets.
I've booked as far ahead as ocado will let me. Despite having had a loaf of sliced genius bread in my basket every week since ocado launched in my area - maybe eight years but bit sure - there was virtually no gf bread available for the next three weeks. Am I really selfish for wanting one small loaf of bread a week when I'm in isolation for another 11 weeks?

safariboot · 24/03/2020 11:06

As I expected, Tesco have cancelled my delivery scheduled for today anyway.

LimitIsUp · 24/03/2020 13:08

I have always ordered once per week for a weekly shop, so 10 days ago I booked my slots right through to mid May. I don't see why I should lose my weekly slot as a loyal customer of > 10 years to some Johnny come lately.

I have just added some items to my next slot this weekend for a 92 year old neighbour., and some fresh produce for a friend - thus keeping 2 more households out of the supermarket

RaininSummer · 24/03/2020 13:24

I don't know how anyone is getting a slot. Trying for my mum but fully booked. I actually have one I booked ages ago and will have to see what I can get for her but the limits make it hard. I think they should release slots 6 weeks ahead and limit to one per household every 3 weeks or less now.

Itwasntme1 · 25/03/2020 07:02

I got a slot for my parents. They seem to be easier during the early hours of the morning. I got one for 13 April when I went on at 4am.

Between my sister, brother and I we have regular enough slots to keep them topped up with the essentials.

This not sleeping has some advantages.

Aurorie11 · 25/03/2020 07:07

I've got a slot for tomorrow and then a week Thursday and none after that. I'm currently shopping for 11 people, 3 households who are self isolating plus ours and working from home and trying to educate 2 children. I'm dreading not being able to get an online slot to get most of the shopping I need for 11.

ceeveebee · 25/03/2020 07:21

After my ocado online shop just didn’t arrive on Sunday, am now going local - have arranged deliveries from a milkman, fishmonger, veg box scheme and the local butcher is also delivering (and there are other companies doing national meat box schemes eg Campbell’s meat)., Have also bought a pasta machine and a couple of bags of flour from amazon.

FoxEars · 25/03/2020 07:24

Fuck sake I can't even get one let alone multiple orders
