SleepingStandingUp · 22/03/2020 20:51

They've announced theyll be closed by tomorrow night.
I feel sad for the thousands of staff but also for us thst we've lost another part of our lives, my DS loves MacDonalds, it's part of our aider routine and something tbsts just for us that it's gone now. Not even like we can go for one last happy meal

I hope the lovely staff can pick up work in the supermarkets

This is sad. Where are the nhs shift workers going to get coffee at 3am now (don’t say the hospital, the nhs dosent do staff coffee). Hopefully all take away food providers won’t close, not everyone has the ability to cook.

SleepingStandingUp · 23/03/2020 00:32

@Daffie19 yes semi, cos the kid needs bread and cheese at least plus nappies, the babies (plural) need milk and nappies, there's no delivery slots and we don't have people who can do it all for us

@Blimeyoreilly2020 to reassure you MacDonalds isn't my first concern how about I lost the ones that keep me awake.
If hospitals start choosing who to give a ventilator to, will they give one to a to 4yo with lung and v heart issues or will they let him die to save someone else.
If m gets ill and DH goes to care for her and then catches it, he'll be away for over a month potentially. What happens to the kids if I catch it as it seems like I won't be in my feet. If one of the kids catches it and has to go to hospital and the others don't have it, what do I do if DH is with his mom. If there's one ventilator and both my babies are sick who chooses?
If DH loses his job, will thec80% be enough and how slowly will the courts process eviction?
Is my Dad actually self isolating with copd or just telling me he is?
Will 6 months off school complete regress the

Will 6 months off school cometely regress the very hard won progress we made on DS and his social schools after long periods of hospitalisation as a baby and will he go back to having meltdowns every time a child comes near him?
Am I neglecting my twins when I'm trying to home school the 4 yo?
What if there's something wrong with the twisn that the HV would have picked up but now won't because she's not coming round?
How badly will this isolation affect their development?

Is that sufficient other worries for me to have a sad moment over MacDonalds, where even when I went in and my son had fallen over and was pouring of blood, the experience has always been positive in the end?

milkmaid97 · 23/03/2020 00:42

I'm glad they're finally closing and my husband doesn't have to go to work there everyday and serve all the selfish people still going in and risk peaking on the virus to me and our toddler and new baby. He said they were still so busy every day it's crazy!
Also staff will be getting 80% pay so not all bad

milkmaid97 · 23/03/2020 00:44

Also it's because the staff have to work in such close quarters in the kitchen etc am they can't safely stay away from each other.

NewYearNewJob123 · 23/03/2020 01:29

It'll reopen in a few weeks. Get a grip people, it's a burger place closing for a bit, not the end of life as we know it.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 23/03/2020 01:53

Macdonalds - never eat the food, but always useful when you need to use the loo.

eaglejulesk · 23/03/2020 02:52

Wow - I jokingly wrote an earlier post to say I must get a Kiwiburger before McDonalds shut down in NZ. Just got it in time (delicious) - New Zealand is going into lockdown in 24 hours time Shock

eaglejulesk · 23/03/2020 02:55

48 hours not 24

vodkaredbullgirl · 23/03/2020 03:02

Looks like we are all on a health kick now, we had a macd yesterday.

gingersausage · 23/03/2020 05:37

@Ondalay do you actually know that for a fact? I’d be interested to hear about it.

yorkshireteaspoonie · 23/03/2020 05:47

The BBC has just reported that macdonalds employ 135,000 people across the country... most of them on zero hour contracts. All now without a job. This is the point OP was trying to make, and whether you personally frequent macdonalds or not, it's a well loved family restaurant where most of us have memories either as children ourselves or taking your children now. Frankly I'm appalled at those criticising the OP and the care of her son when she was merely trying to express some sadness. BE KIND

TheSquitz · 23/03/2020 05:55

My brother has been working for McD's for 25+ years. He has a learning disability so this will hit him quite hard as he struggles with a change of routine. He just can't understand why church has shut and why he can't go to his favourite café. It's a sensible move. I'll just have to try to explain why.

SleepingStandingUp · 23/03/2020 06:00

I think in these tough times it can be something as minor as this which sends you over the edge. Ds is in the 12 week shielding group but I can fully get why your sad at this because it sort of highlights the situations severity. (If that makes sense)

vjg13 · 23/03/2020 07:07

My daughter worked yesterday and it was incredibly busy, the drive in was queuing back onto the road at 10:55am and some of the customers were very abusive. Many McDonalds are a franchise, including the one she works at.

OP do try to contact a few branches local to you today and see if they can let you have some frozen food for your boy and containers.

TreeTopTim · 23/03/2020 07:45

I felt a little sad when I read this. Not because it's McDonald's but because life as we know it is changing. I suffer from mental health issues and struggle with changes in routine. I fear for myself and others like me. Being stuck at home for weeks/months means that my mental health will spiral downwards. I have made a few changes already, stopped socializing, going places unnecessarily etc and already I can see that my mental health has decreased. I don't know how I am going to get through this.

Theresnobslikeshowb · 23/03/2020 07:47

SleepingStandingUp chin up, it’s quite obvious that a trip to McDonalds is just a little rainbow in a very worrying time for you. We are all allowed our rainbows, no matter what they are, and are equally allowed to be sad when the rainbow goes.

DancyNancy · 23/03/2020 07:57

OP I was a bit cranky last night and I actually hate McDonald's and what they stand for.
However,
From your point of view I need to write again to say I understand what you are saying. It's one thing in a borage of stuff that has made you sad.

I'm sorry that your little fella struggles with eating and additional needs. That is stressful on a normal day so the current situation is so hard.
Never mind that you have twins, (I have twins too so I know how difficult that is) . From what I'm reading your babies also have some health issues?

Wrapping you in a big hug OP.

My husband and I have both lost our jobs for now (we're in Ireland) and it's certainly stressful times.

I'm sure you've already tried to re create a McDonald's before? Maybe if you could get some empty happy meal packaging from your local? Would that encourage him?

Igotthemheavyboobs · 23/03/2020 08:34

Yanbu OP, I haven't eaten there since last year but the sound of them closing was the first time I have properly cried during all this.

They are just always there and always open (even on Christmas day in some areas!) suddenly knowing even Maccie D's is closing makes this whole thing more real some how.

Yes it's weird what things floor you.

BarbaraofSeville · 23/03/2020 08:37

DD3 is heartbroken this means she'll have to cook propelry or starve

I know you're probably joking, but this lack of food outlets is going to be a big culture shock for some people. It's not so long ago that I read that a sizeable minority of mainly young urban professional types bought the majority of their food ready prepared and out of the house - Pret lunches, Deliveroo or restaurant dinners etc and it's all been taken away from them virtually overnight. On the bright side, they're going to save a fortune.

As for the people saying McD's are all owned by small little franchise owners

Er, they are, it's fairly well known. A lot of them will be very successful, but that will be after years of hard work and significant investment and risk. This could be catestrophic for franchisees just starting out or those in less than prime locations. From McDonalds own website:

www.mcdonalds.com/gb/en-gb/help/faq/18510-how-many-mcdonalds-restaurants-are-there-in-the-uk-and-the-world.html

'Within the UK, there are approximately 1300 restaurants of which around 1100 are franchised'

SleepingStandingUp · 23/03/2020 09:05

Oh fancy that's crap, I hope you can access financial assistance?
Not sure what I wrote but the twins are standard issue little fat things, they're perfect just young. Only the big one who gives me trouble. Sending that hug right back at you xx

FrankieManca · 23/03/2020 09:10

yes in amongst all the horror I have the capacity to feel sad that somewhere that helped my tube fed child eat, somewhere staffed by lovely kind people who now have no job is gone

Really sorry for your situation, OP.

It is hard for all, and harder for some than others. Take care. Flowers

x2boys · 23/03/2020 09:29

Yes it's sad etc but in the great scheme of things people need to get.things into perspective there's a virus that is killing people particularly those with underlying health problems and people are still not getting this .
