They've announced theyll be closed by tomorrow night.
I feel sad for the thousands of staff but also for us thst we've lost another part of our lives, my DS loves MacDonalds, it's part of our aider routine and something tbsts just for us that it's gone now. Not even like we can go for one last happy meal

I hope the lovely staff can pick up work in the supermarkets

McD is going to be absolutely packed tomorrow, guaranteed! People will be ready to queue for hours to have their last "mcmeal"

GasLightShining · 22/03/2020 21:44

I'm pretty sure McDonalds can survive this

A lot are franchises so are small businesses.

My DC and partner work there and have just found out. Hopefully the 80% will kick in although one is on a zero hour contract so unsure how that works.

With the schools shutting it's for the best but it's very unsettling for the staff.

JustInCaseCakeHappens · 22/03/2020 21:45

Tumbledryer1
just go on their website, why would they make a fake announcement?

Moneypenny007 · 22/03/2020 21:45

You know it's not forever right?

ilovecakeandwine · 22/03/2020 21:50

It's definitely true dd got the message a few minutes before released .

Luunaa · 22/03/2020 21:53

I'm sad about it too. We enjoy the food, it's part of our routine. Don't really understand why the drive thrus have to shut- I thought food places would stay open.

Anychance123 · 22/03/2020 21:53

Yanbu, it’s something else closing (rightly so) and everything just feels like a nightmare parallel universe. It’s not so much specifically McDonald’s but it’s another change. Everything feels sad now.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 22/03/2020 21:58

The free kids meals was true, it just wasn't happening in the UK.

Tumbledryer1 · 22/03/2020 21:59

If it’s true then fair enough I stand corrected - I’m just saying that earlier in the week there was a fake post going around about free kids meals so I didn’t immediately believe this - although it is looking real from what people are saying.

dontaskformedicaladviceonmn · 22/03/2020 22:00

Many businesses will be killed off by this virus, but Maccie Ds isn’t one of them

I imagine many people on here don’t understand that McDonald’s are franchises. They are owned by small people paying massive amounts for the name.

It's down to idiots who can't follow simple guidelines. I work for a fast food franchise - not McDonald's though - and even though we have a veeerrryyy clear line that customers should stay behind not 1 customers attention to it. Nor did they take much notice when asked to wait outside for their food if the waiting area became crowded (by this I mean too crowded to allow for the 2m distance rule, so not many customers at all). I had customers laughing at my refusal to take cash from their hands/give change back into their hands, roll their eyes when I had to explain the policy, and even look mildly offended when I was using anti-bacterial gel after every money exchange. People just don't seem to care at all and it is down to these people that staff at McDonald's are losing their jobs and other take-always will no doubt follow meaning lots of us will also be out of a job and struggling to feed our families.

I'm on minimum wage, I struggle to pay my bills as it is 80% protection, whilst obviously really, really helpful and I'm very grateful the government are offering this - likely won't cover what is needed sadly.

EmeraldShamrock · 22/03/2020 22:00

Surely the workers come under the 80% wage even if on zero hour contracts.
It should assessed or a standard amount.
The government in Ireland are giving a pandemic payment of €203 to anyone who lost their job due to Covid19. It won't cover much but takes away some worry.

zsazsajuju · 22/03/2020 22:02

People are just getting so utterly nasty. It’s a shame that the mcds will close. I know my dds will be sad.

gingersausage · 22/03/2020 22:03

@QuestionableMouse nice of your BM to bother to tell you. My son is on his day off and he found out from FB 😒.

nogoodusernames · 22/03/2020 22:04

Our local one went drive thru only for a few days with only contactless card payments (actual restaurant completely closed for both sitting and takeaways)

I’m guessing it’s about stopping spread through staff, there are always lots of people working really closely together in quite a cramped environment. Just hope they have options with pay etc

ilovecakeandwine · 22/03/2020 22:06

Dd doesn't think it's the customers as it's drive through only but the staff are close together.
I think perhaps it's that they know they are contributing to the problem of self isolation not taken seriously. I know the McDonald's near me the queues were huge this weekend, it's like a day out for people.
I'm sorry for dd but hopefully it's just a few weeks .

Falacy · 22/03/2020 22:07

We are all in the at risk category, but not getting out will affect our mental health greatly. A simple walk somewhere nice with a small treat meal made so much difference mentally.

Sorry but this is exactly the reason why they needed to be closed.

People cannot be trusted.

I really hope you have a long, long, long think about the mental health of all our NHS staff when this crisis peaks. Then ask yourself if staying home was really that bad in comparison.

manicinsomniac · 22/03/2020 22:07

This kind of thing going (not McDs specifically but easy, cheap ready made food) makes me worry for a lot of people. For many, this kind of provision isn't an optional treat; it's a lifeline. I know of an older, autistic gentleman who lives alone in sheltered housing (same complex as my mum, I don't know the man personally but she does). He doesn't know how to cook and he doesn't have friends. He has McDonald's at least once a day, giving him a hot meal and a conversation. It's his daily routine and my mum doesn't know how he'll manage without it. I think there are a lot of lonely, older, vulnerable people who will feel the loss of takeaway food like this badly.

I don't know which is more dangerous any more. The physical threat of the virus or the psychological and physical threat of the loss of normality and relationship.

ItsAllTheDramaMickIJustLoveIt · 22/03/2020 22:09

It is a shame (my son loves a maccies too) but totally get why they need to close. The one near us is always rammed and a little thing like a worldwide pandemic isn’t going to stop people queuing up for it.

happyandsingle · 22/03/2020 22:16

So there is no food in the supermarket to buy and now takeaways will be shutting? It's been a lifesaver for me as I couldn't get anything decent in the supermarkets and have a fussy teen. IMO it's better to have as many options for food right now as supermarket shelves are bare. I really thought take out would be fine or even drive thru.
I really hope supermarket shelves go back to normal I'm panicking what I will be able to find each day especially as dd of school.

Malvinaa81 · 22/03/2020 22:18

You should be glad they are closing, and use the opportunity to cook some proper food.

DancyNancy · 22/03/2020 22:20

I always felt lucky I never liked coke or McDonald's food. I doubt this is going to be the end of McDonald's. But the staff I feel sorry for. Their food is shit. Yes they offset some of their crap by having a charity. I think that is for pr but nevertheless it is a welcome gift to many. I understand your child ate so you have a special bond with them.
They will be back never fear.
Feel sadder about the small businesses who may not reopen after this

P1nkHeartLovesCake · 22/03/2020 22:20

It’s sad for the staff I know government will pay 80% wage but 20% pay cut when on low wage is a lot!

eaglejulesk · 22/03/2020 22:20

Oh no!! I'm in NZ, so maybe I should go and get a Kiwiburger before things start happening here - the memory of it will get me through Grin
(I'm in a smallish town by the way, and if there are a lot of people I will take it out)

ChicCroissant · 22/03/2020 22:23

It is true.

I will miss the coffee, we quite often use McD's as a drive-through cafe!
