Anyone know what time to expect it today? Is Boris doing it today?

I see the BBC have a Coronavirus daily special 4.10-5.40pm today so presuming it will be then?

Do you think we'll have any announcements today? I'm hoping there are more lockdown measures announced. I think it's time to shut non essential shops and enforce social distancing.

Apologies, only in the second year of my Psychology degree, so not a PhD but wouldn't a lockdown come under the Utilitarianism theory of sociology rather than a psychological theory?

Forza14 · 22/03/2020 19:48

Your links are irrelevant, Dr Stupid.

Salud · 22/03/2020 19:48

They will be basing a lot of their studies on the immune systems of males vs females and healthy adults vs children. Not my speciality, but the various reactions to it will be of special interest.

Salud · 22/03/2020 19:50

My PhD was in Criminology. My degree was Psychology. Similar behaviour patterns.

NettleTea · 22/03/2020 19:51

Im wondering if the letter is to prove entitlement to the free food and medicine stuff, because you can bet a million dollars that some greedy bastards would fake being vulnerable to get a free food and drug delivery if they could.

PleaseStopCrying · 22/03/2020 19:53

Salud none of your links prove that only the vulnerable are being admitted to hospital? They say its more likely to be the vulnerable but that doesnt mean those without underlying health conditions are not being admitted and dying.

Salud · 22/03/2020 19:53

A lockdown by government would come under sociology to some degree, but the behaviour of individuals, and particularly certain sectors of society is also studied in psychology.

Eggcited · 22/03/2020 19:54

None of those links definitively says Nobody except extremely vulnerable are requiring hospitalisation.

In fact, one, arguably the most credible among them even admits.
Data on age and outcomes, including hospitalization, ICU admission, and death, were missing for 9%–53% of cases

Salud · 22/03/2020 19:55

NettleTea - nail and head.

A few posters on this thread have admitted that they want to get the paid leave that the lockdown would provide. Most however are concerned about humanity Wink

slashlover · 22/03/2020 19:55

I've a PhD in psychology.

My PhD was in Criminology. My degree was Psychology. Similar behaviour patterns.

Ummm...

Eggcited · 22/03/2020 19:56

you can bet a million dollars that some greedy bastards would fake being vulnerable to get a free food and drug delivery if they could.

Oh I can well believe it. The school I work at had people lying about being key workers.

Salud · 22/03/2020 19:56

Eggcited - if I recall correctly, the data is from China that we're analysing, so that data would be missing would not be surprising.

MarshaBradyo · 22/03/2020 19:57

What paid leave? It makes no difference.

Wannabangbang · 22/03/2020 19:57

It is killing people in their 30s and 40s. And 2 of those had no underlying health conditions. In Italy
Its frightening.
How can the pm watch Italy now and think he's making the right decisions? We aren't far behind and with all the seaside mass gatherings this weekend lockdown will come much too late

Eggcited · 22/03/2020 19:59

if I recall correctly, the data is from China that we're analysing, so that data would be missing would not be surprising.

You don't recall correctly. The data they are analyzing is from US cases.

Data from cases reported from 49 states, the District of Columbia, and three U.S. territories (5) to CDC during February 12–March 16 were analyzed.

nellodee · 22/03/2020 19:59

Not got a PhD here, but I can google.

Salud · 22/03/2020 20:00

2 people in Italy who died out of the multiple thousands and you want us to base public policy on those two? Not reasonable.

Salud · 22/03/2020 20:02

nellodee - your data doesn't correlate deaths and hospitalisations with underlying conditions.
They are the two known high risk factors.
The youngest person to die in Italy this week was 27 but she had underlying conditions (unspecified).

slashlover · 22/03/2020 20:03

I don't know if I would keep my job. Even if I got 80% of my wages it would not be enough for me to live on. I live alone so a lockdown would screw with my mental health.

We need a lockdown. My parents/aunts/uncles are elderly and I'm terrified of something happening to them.

You said about Waitrose showed who they really are but surely that's just a combination of the deviancy amplification spiral and a load of terrified people?

nellodee · 22/03/2020 20:03

Here we have it given by percentage of age group. Figures are from the US, from the CDC.

Sunday Press Conference
Wannabangbang · 22/03/2020 20:03

We should be on lockdown, look at italy really watch the videos of mass coffins. Stop burying your head in the sand. There is no herd immunity

Salud · 22/03/2020 20:04

Terrified? Don't make me laugh.

nellodee · 22/03/2020 20:04

Do over 14% of 20-44 year olds have an underlying condition?

Salud · 22/03/2020 20:06

Nellodee - again you're looking at age only.
