People still out and about at hairdressers etc

Today I have seen a neighbour returning from the shops with about 5 clothes bags. A hairdressers over the road with loads of people in having their hair and nails done. And the pub up the road was still open with about 50 punters in tonight.

AIBU to wonder why they think they are immune to catching the virus with a 20% chance of ending up in hospital?

Meanwhile my dd is a doctor who is putting her life on the line to treat these selfish idiots when they inevitably get ill.

Today I’m going riding and then going for afternoon tea. We checked with the tea place and they’re still open but have limited numbers so they can have tables further away.

You can't do this. To be really blunt it's actions like these which will be responsible for more people dying 2-4 weeks down the line. You're unlikely to die but the waitress's mother might or the person who comes in after you and picks the virus up from a door handle you've just touched.

Haven't you seen the videos from inside hospitals where people are dying painfully and slowly en masse? Anything you can do at this stage, anything, will save more lives. You do not need to have afternoon tea. Others need their loved ones around.

And that's the polite version of what I could have said

EmeraldShamrock · 21/03/2020 11:21

The truth lies in the thread, people are selfish ignorant idiots.

AnnaMagnani · 21/03/2020 11:21

My hairdressers is still open - but they have also posted the measures they are taking for safety:

making everyone wash their hands on entry and exit
checking all customers for symptoms and temperature
all towels single use then destroyed
sterilizing each station between clients

I'm actually quite sad I don't need a haircut right now.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 21/03/2020 11:23

but tbh part of me almost wishes I'd get it so I could then proceed with my life

Confused

What?? You do know that you can still both get it and carry it to others after you’ve had it, right? You wouldn’t be able to carry on normal life after you’d recovered from it!

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 21/03/2020 11:26

Today I’m going riding and then going for afternoon tea.

Fuck a duck! What is wrong with you? What is it about no non essential contact that you don’t understand? What is it about maintaining a 6 foot space between you and others that you dong understand?

Why are you happy to risk the lives of all those people you will be in contact with? Why aren’t you happy to pile so much more pressure on the NHS when it can’t cope already?

In fact how dare you??

Geometricprince · 21/03/2020 11:27

I don't think you understand social distancing.

80sMum · 21/03/2020 11:28

I work in a school, i in an office. Apparently it's business as usual next week, with everyone, including the teachers, expected to be in! The only people not there will be the pupils.

I'm surprised, to be honest, given the social distance instructions we've had from the government.

I'm considering not going in on Monday.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 21/03/2020 11:30

Saw a post on local buy sell pages yesterday- a woman looking for someone to come and fit brackets to her wall so she can move her tv from the stand it isn’t on to the wall.

Hmm yeah, that’s really fucking essential isn’t it?

ememem84 · 21/03/2020 11:30

Just as a question. Are people Really going to stay indoors for 6-18 months?

EmeraldShamrock · 21/03/2020 11:30

My hairdressers is still open - but they have also posted the measures they are taking for safety Unless they've been tested as negative and kept in a bubble suite they can't possibly ensure safety.
All hairdressers are closed here 2 weeks, my niece and her apprentice pals are all still socialising, imagine the apprentice washing your hair breathing on you probably out with her 10 mates the previous night, they don't care they believe their youth will save them. Not just teen hairdressers I'm angry with 2 teen niece's for their lack of social distancing
It is just not worth it.

Baaaahhhhh · 21/03/2020 11:32

My brother, just retired, and having had his holiday to Vietnam disrupted, has gone on a weekend break with his partner (retired PC). He basically doesn't give damn. My horrible old (92) mother just gave me a talking to, as to how he is living his life, and has his priorities right, whereas I am being stupid for not going out and doing something for mothers day. This from an Italian, who should know bloody better. Oh, but we survived the war, and didn't have all this silliness....... I hate her.

Noooblerooble · 21/03/2020 11:32

That's not actually what the science is saying. Early findings are that once you've had it, most people have at least short term immunity (around a year) So as most people get it there are plans to allow those people to get back on with their lives. It's why they're so keen to develop the test to see who has definitely had the virus. These people will be crucial to getting the economy going and to everyone in developing some herd immunity (hopefully)

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 21/03/2020 11:33

Are people Really going to stay indoors for 6-18 months?

As long as people behave like you are then we won’t have a choice because the government will I’ll be forced to make that decision for us.

Noooblerooble · 21/03/2020 11:34

Sorry the 'around a year' thing is obviously an educated guess but that's their hope based on other viruses and the data they have atm

Geometricprince · 21/03/2020 11:34

Just as a question. Are people Really going to stay indoors for 6-18 months?

Nope, I'll continue to walk the dog whilst keeping my distance from anyone else I see out and about. I'll also spend time in the garden and will most likely have to visit a food shop from time to time. But otherwise, yes. We're being asked to sit on our sofas with most of our home comforts, not being sent to the front line, doesn't seem like a lot to ask to me.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 21/03/2020 11:34

At least one person has contracted it a second time.

nevermorelenore · 21/03/2020 11:34

My town's farmers market went ahead today. Don't know how they managed to keep a distance of 2m when buying goats cheese and tatty homemade jewellery.

ShesGotBetteDavisEyes · 21/03/2020 11:38

I don’t think its all people being selfish necessarily - I think it’s ignorance with a lot of people. I’ve spent the best part of yesterday patiently explaining, over and over to dc’s (and to some extent DH) why it’s so important to take this deadly seriously.

They aren’t reading into it as much as me and don’t have all the figures and information as I do. It’s the same with people “out there”. I think there are a lot of people burying their head in the sand and not seeking the information - like sticking their fingers in their ears and singing, what they don’t know can’t hurt them is the mentality. They think if it’s open, it must mean it’s safe (like my MIL who has been going swimming up until yesterday).

But yeah, if you know all the info and you’re still going for a manicure - you’re selfish and a massive dickhead to boot.

AlternativePerspective · 21/03/2020 11:46

At least one person has contracted it a second time. Actually that was discredited weeks ago.

But even if it was true, one person out of a total of 200000 is so tiny as to be negligible.

It’s possible to contract chicken pox more than once (I did) but generally it is recognised that once you’ve had it once you’re unlikely to catch it again.

Oblomov20 · 21/03/2020 11:47

I find it staggering. Frightening.
That people are so selfish, stupid.

Why are people not obeying PM Boris's instructions? Only essential. It's not hard to understand.

JuanSheetIsPlenty · 21/03/2020 11:50

Also the fact that so few people are being tested means we have no real idea of whether it’s possible or how likely it is to contract it again or to spread it after you’ve already had it. Many people will also think they’ve had it (because symptoms are mild for many) when they haven’t. Because they aren’t being tested- just dealing with it at home. So they think they’ve had it when they haven’t, recover, go about normal lives and then spread it around and then catch it for real.

Metoyoutoo · 21/03/2020 12:06

If I knew there was a place serving afternoon tea, I’d report them because they’re meant to be shut.

Badskinday · 21/03/2020 12:24

@ememem84 you don’t understand social distancing.

It’s about avoiding unnecessary social contact. Going riding and for afternoon tea is unnecessary social contact so you shouldn’t be doing it.

@Homkaismycat your hair doesn’t need doing. You would like to get your hair done. That’s very different. Stay at home and cancel our appointment. I can’t believe you are saying you don’t know what to do with 4 co morbidites. Are you really thinking getting your hair done is worth risking your life?

Dontsweatthelittlestuff · 21/03/2020 12:24

I live on the coast. This morning at around 10.30 I drove along the coast road to drop my son to work so that he didn’t have to use public transport with the additional risks on being in a confined space with strangers. The beach side play ground was packed with young children all playing on the play equipment whilst the mothers grouped together for a chat. The town centre was less busy than normal but still plenty of teens about. A few older people outside M&S food hall and plenty of dog walkers across the green.

The dog walkers were fine as they all seemed to be on their own and keeping a decent distance from each other. The people outside M&S mostly looked like they were trying to keep apart but a few could do with stepping back a few paces but the riots in the play area along with the teens wandering through town need a good slap and the will be the reason why we end up in the same boat as Italy.
