But we need leadership to spell it out just how serious this situation is. They are starting to but only a week ago they were so dismissive saying we've got this under control when that just wasn't true.

TheBenefitsPeople · 21/03/2020 18:57

Maybe it's fear? Maybe it's the sheer utter frustration of seeing people ignoring clear warnings despite the catastrophic results which would come from their behaviour? I'm not surprised that people are catastrophising!

HouseElfy · 21/03/2020 18:57

Yes it is. On what basis and evidence are you saying that the army is going to shoot people?

SunshineCake · 21/03/2020 18:58

*@HouseElfy you need to report yourself then as you've repeated it Hmm

HouseElfy · 21/03/2020 18:59

Happy to do that sunshine. Not trying to pick a fight.

NettleTea · 21/03/2020 19:00

In truth I wouldnt point a gun as I dont have a licence and cant shoot for toffee.
But you get the sentiment!
If Im trying hard to isolate for 12 weeks, which is what weve been told we need to do, as a minimum, and someone puts them at risk, Im not going to be best amused.
twas just a bit of dickish bravado to get the point accross

OldQueen1969 · 21/03/2020 19:02

I am incredibly worried for NHS staff, they should be a priority for screening and the very best protective clothing available.

Today is the lowest I have felt - I spoke to my DP who is still working earlier - he sounds utterly defeated. He's in a non-essential field but without lockdown being enforced, the "spice must flow".

Every time I cough, I feel a slight spasm of fear. I'm menopausal so can't tell if I've got a temperature at the best of ruddy times. I don't want to go out, but my Mum will starve if I don't, and she has had her taste buds destroyed by chemo, so I have to try and find things she can stomach that don't make her feel sick. She is so tired, and has no enjoyment in her life. She is housebound anyway and is losing the capacity to potter - tiny tasks leave her exhausted. I can see myself moving in with her before too long.

I think I could be more prosaic about the whole virus thing if I wasn't dealing with my Mum's demise on top. And I know I'm not the only one in this kind of situation by any means. Thank fuck my kids are adults and are following the rules. If I had to juggle child childcare I think I might have had to be taken off for a spa break in a natty jacket with straps and buckles by now.

Elbow bumps and all the best to everyone.

I live in Norway, we have been shut down/ lockdown for a week now. As of tonight our numbers are 2128 positive, 7 died, 155 in hospital and 130 new cases today.
I think our lower death rate is due to the health of people over here. People in general really take care of themselves (exercise, good diet). Maybe that's the same for Switzerland and Germany?
Our government are only testing if you are admitted to hospital or (I think) hospital staff. So they have admitted that the dark number could be much higher.

MadameF · 21/03/2020 19:07

Not sure I agree it is down to the general health of the population. In France we are quite healthy, not much obesity, but we have not done enough testing and we don't have enough beds for intensive care (unlike Germany). Neither do we have enough marks or gel. The French government have really mismanaged things.

ClientQueen · 21/03/2020 19:12

@whataballbag FB?

Angryrant55 · 21/03/2020 19:16

I am going to take a break for a bit - think its all getting too much.

Helenj1977 · 21/03/2020 19:19

@Angryrant55 After seeing the amount of people out today, I agree with you. People just don't get it x

God I’m frustrated, the panic buying is pissing me off. Several weeks ago I bought a couple of extra loaves (gluten free as coeliac) for the freezer, some frozen veg, oven chips, a few pizzas, I thought that would do, I could probably eek out on crap food for a couple of weeks just continue getting my normal shop. Five days ago, before my normal shop I became ill, I’m self isolating with DH for 14 days. No worries I’ll get a shop in line, no slots until the end of April.

We haven’t got family just us. I rang the farm shop who let me buy some veg pay on line, DH went and the bought it out to him and left it for him to pick up.

We are not going to last for another 10 days, so despite me probably having it, either DH, or myself will have to go to a shop. I already know there is no gluten free bread or pasta, from a local FB group. People who don’t need it have been buying it - dd needs lactofree milk, none of that apparently either, she will be very ill if she has dairy.

What do we do? I also feel crap, weepy and scared 😟

Bearbehind · 21/03/2020 19:23

There’s an enormous world of difference between thinking people aren’t taking this seriously enough and stating that they expect people to be shot on the streets for not adhering to lock down rules

The latter is so ridiculous and unfounded it only helps to convince the former this is being blown out of proportion.

This is big shit - people do need to understand that.

But scare mongering helps no one

whataballbag · 21/03/2020 19:28

@ClientQueen yes!

mrshoho · 21/03/2020 19:29

@Calmonthesurfacebut whereabouts are you?Can you ring the supermarket you normally get your stuff from and explain. There are deliveries ongoing and I'm sure they could put some aside in your circumstances. There are churches/charities here offering to help vulnerable with shopping etc.

SansaSnark · 21/03/2020 19:29

@lmerc No, you are only allowed to walk through private land on a public right of way. There are lots of reasons not to walk through land otherwise, and many landowners are VERY wary of tresspassers. I used to work at a yard where some horses were injured by people coming into their field and messing about with them- there is a reason land owners are very protective.

You'd also potentially be putting yourself at risk if you went into fields with livestock, or where chemicals had recently been used, or with large machinery.

SansaSnark · 21/03/2020 19:32

4 people have died today in my county (Cornwall). Today's numbers were already worrying me, but for some reason that has made it hit home even more.

And apparently lots of people are coming down here to self isolate or on holiday Hmm which is awful given we only have a tiny number of critical care beds for the whole county. Normally I accept tourism as a necessary evil but right now I could quite happily tell them all to fuck off.

DakotaFanny · 21/03/2020 19:33

calm where are you? I have some gf pasta bought for son who was due to have endoscopy this week to confirm coeliac, but it was cancelled and he is asymptomatic, so you’d be welcome to have it if you’re anywhere near me! Or I could post it, but obvs not till Monday.x

woodencoffeetable · 21/03/2020 19:35

@Calmonthesurfacebut do you have a neighbourhood association? nextdoor?

worth a shot for help with groceries.

mrshoho · 21/03/2020 19:36

On a brighter note thank fuck we are going through this in the era of online technology and smart TVs. Can you imagine sitting at home with a little radio for information.

I've got two teens thinking they're at the start of a holiday for a month or two as most of their socialising is already online. I don't know how long or if at all before they will miss the real world.

Imerc · 21/03/2020 19:37

I see that useful to know just in general actually, don't want to get murdered for trespassing thinking it was OK. If you're in Cornwall hopefully you can still avoid getting sick, more space between people ?
