But it would appear Italy had a far more serious and concentrated problem than the UK right from the beginning

It seems that a huge number of our cases originated in Italy from travellers at the end of February which would imply they had enormous infection rates very early on

It’s spreading here but, for reasons unknown, doesn’t appear to have a stronghold in any one location

London is just a numbers game

I’m not minimising how serious this is, I’m just being pragmatic about the fact there seems little reason to assume it is going to be that bad here where they are so out of line with every other country in the world

CrunchyCarrot · 21/03/2020 17:28

So 233 new cases in the UK today. Depressingly we are level pegging with Italy, still.

Sky news live just announced I think 233 UK deaths in total, cumulative.

No new numbers for positive tests that I've seen. Also being reported on the Guardian live feed.

Angryrant55 · 21/03/2020 17:30

Mirror Breaking News - 'BREAKING: UK coronavirus death toll jumps to 233 after 53 more patients die in single day.'

defthand · 21/03/2020 17:31

Isn’t that 56 deaths? The U.K. gov site says there were 177 deaths yesterday.

Lifesavesocialdistance · 21/03/2020 17:33

Two ENT consultants in critical care?

I knew two were ill...

CrunchyCarrot · 21/03/2020 17:34

It seems very surreal to think we are at the same number of deaths as Italy was 2 weeks ago. Doesn't seem possible that we could have nearly 5,000 deaths in 2 weeks' time, and yet logic tells me that's what will happen if people don't obey social isolation.

Angryrant55 · 21/03/2020 17:34

I think 53 in england two in wales and maybe one in one of the other two.

Givemeabreakpls · 21/03/2020 17:35

I’m being thick but can someone tell me how many deaths there were yesterday? Is this another sharp increase?

Angryrant55 · 21/03/2020 17:35

Allie Hodgkins-Brown - 'It's been announced that a further 56 people have died in the UK after testing positive with the virus in England (53), Scotland (1) & Wales (2); NI (0).'

Unless we get lockdown by tuesday we might have 6k or more deaths in two weeks

cjt110 · 21/03/2020 17:36

Is bojo making a statement today?

CrunchyCarrot · 21/03/2020 17:36

From the figures I have, there were 33 deaths on 20th March (bringing the total to 177) and today there have been 56 (total now 233).

cjt110 · 21/03/2020 17:37

May I ask people also to think about what they need.. not just in terms of food.. my husband is still working because some idiot wanted their Aircon checked and an air freshener for their car....!

DadDadDad · 21/03/2020 17:37

@Givemeabreakpls - two days ago, UK death toll was 144. Yesterday added 33, today has added 56 to bring total to 233.

Angryrant55 · 21/03/2020 17:37

Andrew Gregory - 'Coronavirus death toll in UK climbs to 233 after 53 more people die in England

Patients aged between 41 and 94

19 deaths in London including 8 at London North West University Healthcare NHS Trust.'

London figures falling as a proportion of all the deaths?

41 the youngest uk victim.

Rocketmam · 21/03/2020 17:38

Ouch. We can expect 2000 ish death in two weeks then.

Even if we went into lockdown tomorrow, it wouldn't stop that. Those poor souls are already infected.

MrsBartlet · 21/03/2020 17:38

Is it too late to stop us from following Italy's trajectory? I don't understand why the government are not taking more drastic action. The figures seem to speak for themselves that we could be in the same position as Italy in 14 days time.

defthand · 21/03/2020 17:39
  1. 😢
Imerc · 21/03/2020 17:39

I agree it could have mutated, but there's already a known violent strain, the original virus. I myself am sufficiently terrified to be wearing masks and gloves outside and thinking about leaving for somewhere more natural. But that will involve a lot of social contact, removal van, using transport. Maybe mask and gloves will be enough. But this could go on for years

Angryrant55 · 21/03/2020 17:39

Because minimum of 20k have been written off.

Givemeabreakpls · 21/03/2020 17:40

Thanks so much for the figures. I can’t quite believe we’re only at the beginning of a steep upward curve.

mrshoho · 21/03/2020 17:40

@CrunchyCarrot the way things stand it is going to happen even with people following social isolation. The infection has bern circulating and spreading without us doing any large scale community testing. I'm sorry to be so negative but that is the way it is.

crsacre · 21/03/2020 17:41

Comparison with Italy

Worried about Coronavirus - thread 31
SunshineCake · 21/03/2020 17:45

There are no words.

I think the government has been 'soft' as they know that there are far too many selfish idiots who won't quarantine themselves at all never mind for the length of time needed but it is time they got tough. The Isle of Man have arrested a twat for refusing to self isolate. We need to do it. Anyone who isn't an essential worker needs to stay the fuck at home and give us all a chance otherwise you personally will lose a loved one.

Derbygerbil · 21/03/2020 17:46

How come the Italian lockdown measurement haven't had any effect yet?

Long incubation, then they spread it to families they’re isolating with, then often a week or more into illness before serious symptoms arise, then longer til death :(
