Tim Shipman - 'Third rationing question. Still no ruling out. "We think it's better for retailers to make those judgments" '

Angryrant55 · 21/03/2020 14:31

Alex Wickham - 'So the government goes into the Sundays from that presser with the top line of not ruling out rationing... just in time for people to read their Sunday paper, ignore the advice and head to the shops...'

Angryrant55 · 21/03/2020 14:32

James Millar - 'This press conference is not about holding government to account. It’s about the men of the Sunday lobby (don’t think a single woman has asked a question yet) trying to get a headline involving the word ‘rationing’. It’s not cool.'

Angryrant55 · 21/03/2020 14:36

Daniel Hewitt - 'You wouldn’t know anything had changed in St Albans. Market open, loads of stalls, loads of people out shopping in close confinement. Can hear live music from my place, had a quick run to the end of my road to look. Unreal. Really worry how bad this had to get before ppl listen.'

Italy and Spain dont seem to have food shortages.

I wonder about trust in the state over coronavirus being particularly bad in the UK and that we are getting our communications massively wrong.

Angryrant55 · 21/03/2020 14:42

Spain was an authoritative state until the 1975 so perhaps people there are more obedient.

SubjectMatterExpert · 21/03/2020 14:42

Don’t body counters work on weekends? Why haven’t we had the new stats yet?

"Post from an infectious disease epidemiologist explaining why this situation has arisen and what it means for us all. "

Italy and Spain dont seem to have food shortages.

They did earlier, they are ahead of us in terms of the virus. Does no one remember the images in the news of empty supermarkets in Italy? Hmm

In a few weeks things will level off again here too.

Angryrant55 · 21/03/2020 14:50

Prehaps people only being allowed for grocery shopping keeps everyong to buying some stuff every day.

My parents still refuse to ask for the neighbours mobile so if one of us gets symptoms i fully expect they will be breaking self isloation to get food.

Thank you @AvocadoOwl for confirming that I did not hallucinate those photos of empty shelves in Italy!

I agree that it will settle down here in the UK within a few weeks.

waspfig · 21/03/2020 15:01

@Lifesavesocialdistance Yes! We need some clear graphics I think to help people understand what's going on. There's plenty of info out there but with so much fake news and ott reporting it's hard to know what to believe. People just end up ignoring it all. Diagrams showing the info in sharp targeted bursts would be much better at getting the message across and are easily shared.

Number12 · 21/03/2020 15:04

In a few weeks we will in lockdown the numbers will be horrific. I just don't see how we can avoid it...

Im beyond flabbergasted how people aren't taking this seriously. I want to scream and shout but it wouldn't do any good.

Angryrant55 · 21/03/2020 15:06

Steven Swinford - 'George Eustice says it is not 'necessary or appropriate' for Govt to impose rationing as the supermarkets already doing it.
He says people have stockpiled about £1bn worth of additional food which has not been consumed.
He says people should 'calm down' and buy what they need.'

TheCanterburyWhales · 21/03/2020 15:13

There has been panic buying and empty shelves at certain times. They've now been ordered to close on Sundays.

onalongsabbatical · 21/03/2020 15:14

@buttermilkwaffles thank you for posting that excellent read.

SistemaAddict · 21/03/2020 15:19

What now? Closed on sundays? Back to the 90s we go in that case. My mum still objects to shopping on sundays. Sundays are for church and rest. Well, just rest now.

"NHS England says it has a deal with the nation's independent hospitals to provide more beds, ventilators and thousands of extra healthcare staff which will be made available next week"

Angryrant55 · 21/03/2020 15:23

Kate Ferguson - 'NEW: NHS strikes deal with private hospitals to get nearly 20k qualified medics, 8k beds and 1.2k ventilators to help the battle against coronavirus. All resources being handed over at cost - so no profit will be made.'

MarshaBradyo · 21/03/2020 15:25

That’s good! Pleased to hear it

SansaSnark · 21/03/2020 15:35

@Angryrant55 That's good news, thank you for sharing!

queenjaneappro · 21/03/2020 15:38

Did I read earlier there is another press conference at 5:00?

Angryrant55 · 21/03/2020 15:38

Sky News Breaking - 'John Lewis Partnership says it has taken the "difficult decision" to temporarily close all 50 John Lewis shops at close of business on Monday.'

Angryrant55 · 21/03/2020 15:39

Rosemary Barton - 'An update on Sophie Grégoire-Trudeau’s health, we are told she still has mild flu-like symptoms and headaches. PM still doing well health-wise as are the Trudeau kids.'

justchecking1 · 21/03/2020 15:39

I would think the majority of the 20k qualified medics already work in the NHS. It's just headline grabbing nonsense
