Admit it - anyone thrown away food they bought recently?

Lots of people including me are saying how hard it is getting in some places to buy fresh vegetables and meat. So admit it. Has anyone recently bought too much and ended up throwing it away?

No. I'm at home full time.since I loatbmu job last week.so have time to look into usingvip leftovers.
Just made Queen of puddings with some stale bread and eggs due to go out tomorrow.

Worried about food supplies and money so that a pushing the need on our house.

AliBear90 · 20/03/2020 13:07

Nope, but we buy fresh veg about twice a week and haven’t stockpiled things. No idea who thinks buying tons of fresh stuff is a great idea tbh.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 20/03/2020 13:08

Nope! Though, I have made some strange soups. 😁

Igotthemheavyboobs · 20/03/2020 13:08

Nope, but then i have only bought 2 bags of basil and some cherry toms fresh so probably not your target audience 🤣

itispersonal · 20/03/2020 13:12

We didn't stock pile but partner and I both on the same day, before things went tits up, as we had run out, bought 2 packs of eggs. Bbe beginning of April. We won't use that many so have donated them to my friend who works at local food bank, as well as some snacks, old cuppa soups which we won't use or need. (Hopefully).

Though have just found out you can freeze eggs.

ShanghaiDiva · 20/03/2020 13:12

I did find a pack of mouldy hot cross buns..had hidden them from kids to avoid immediate consumption and then forgot about them.
Apart from that nothing.
We play fridge Tetris everyday: check dates and repack.

TheArchSorcererofContwaraburg · 20/03/2020 13:13

No.

chipsandpeas · 20/03/2020 13:14

yes a packet of sausages that were out of date and smelled a bit iffy, was annoyed i didnt freeze them straight away

NuclearWinter · 20/03/2020 13:15

Probably, but not very much. Three dogs means very little makes it as far as the bin!

EL8888 · 20/03/2020 13:16

Nope. We never normally throw food away -it’s eaten or frozen. We haven’t done any stockpiling is part of it l suppose!

Megan2018 · 20/03/2020 13:16

Not yet. Possibly some salad, will sort fridge later. I had Norovirus this week though which messed up meal plans for 3 days so all the meat in freezer. Otherwise we’d be on track.

Mycoronausername · 20/03/2020 13:17

Currently eating some horrendous soup I've made, absolutely tasteless, I don't know how I've made it so bland tbh. But I'm adamant we will eat it 😂

RedRed9 · 20/03/2020 13:18

Though have just found out you can freeze eggs.

You can?! Do you have to crack them first? I feel like they’d burst out of their shells when they froze.

Gertie75 · 20/03/2020 13:19

I gave almost a whole loaf of bread to the birds, I'd bought it the day before and it was almost stale then managed to get a fresh one.

KittenVsBox · 20/03/2020 13:20

Hell no.
My normal one week shop is going to have to stretch to 11 days, and then see what arrives in the tesco delivery slot I managed to get.
Not a smidgen will be going in the bin in this house.
Fcuk knows what I'll actually be able to buy when we are allowed out.

Anyhow, the kids are fed, and I'm losing some weight that needed to get shifted. Not sure 2kg a week is a particularly healthy rate tho.

KittenVsBox · 20/03/2020 13:22

@RedRed9 yes, crack them, and beat them slightly.
But eggs last way past their sell by date usually.

itispersonal · 20/03/2020 13:23

@RedRed9

Yep apparently you crack them and put them in a plastic container and freeze them.

Though might need those toilet rolls if it turns out to be fake news! 😂

midwestspring · 20/03/2020 13:23

Actually all the food focus currently means nothing is getting wasted. Making sure everyone gets fresh balanced meals and working on food rotation.
Normally much less focused with much more waste.

IpanemaGallina · 20/03/2020 13:23

No way. I’m pretty good at no wastage anyway. Last night we had an odd mix of leftover veg cobbled together with cheese grated over the top. Nobody moaned, even fussy dd. They get how serious this is.

I have only bought what I need, even with two hungry teens.

Sexnotgender · 20/03/2020 13:25

Nope, I’ve meal planned to within an inch of my life! Can’t afford to be wasting food.
I’m not a waster of food generally but I’ve got a little obsessive lately. Makes me less anxious.

Spam88 · 20/03/2020 13:25

@Mycoronausername salt, salt and more salt usually sorts it!

sassbott · 20/03/2020 13:26

Nope. Zero waste here. Another one checking dates and basically with 5 of us here. All I need to say is ‘this is about to be out of date’ and the locusts descend #bonustolivingwithmen

maddiemookins16mum · 20/03/2020 13:30

No. Plus we’re actually cutting down on what we eat. I made Spag Bol the other night, 500 grams of mince, large onion, 2 large grated carrots, tin of toms and a tub of passata. We had it two nights running and two (albeit smallish) portions in the freezer.
It won’t hurt me to cut down on portion sizes.
I even toasted the enders/heels/crusts of the loaf the other day, normally I’d bin it.

Sexnotgender · 20/03/2020 13:35

Us too maddiemookins, we’re being very frugal with what we have.

sprayandwipealot · 20/03/2020 13:37

I did find a pack of mouldy hot cross buns..had hidden them from kids to avoid immediate consumption and then forgot about them

That's funny so did I! I hid them from DH because he spoils cakes and things by putting them in the fridge!!! Drive me mad!
