Admit it - anyone thrown away food they bought recently?

Lots of people including me are saying how hard it is getting in some places to buy fresh vegetables and meat. So admit it. Has anyone recently bought too much and ended up throwing it away?

OP posts:

I’ve not thrown anything. But someone must be pouring milk away, coz I’ve not been able buy any at all, surely people can’t bc suddenly be using sk much more?

squishedgrapes · 20/03/2020 16:31

My daughter ate half of an omelette and emptied the rest onto the bin. I've told her she is limited to one egg for each omelette from now on (she cooks it herself)

TeaAndDarkToast · 20/03/2020 16:32

they mus be using skimmed because there is nada of any variety left!

Greendin · 20/03/2020 16:33

No I'm doing a great job of watching all use by dates, we've had some nice vegetarian meals to use up old veg and last one at the loaf of bread gets their sandwich made from the crust. I've got some slightly out of date margarine and eggs so the DC and I will make fairy cakes with that.

Northernsoullover · 20/03/2020 16:34

I haven't but I'll admit quite shamefully that I was terrible for wasting food. If I didn't fancy something I'd buy something else. Then at the end of the week I'd bin loads. This has taught me a worthwhile lesson.

Hollyhead · 20/03/2020 16:35

No and we ate sausages that were 5 days over last night to avoid waste - all living to te tale so far

FourTeaFallOut · 20/03/2020 16:37

No, sorry to disappoint op. I've been buying only frozen veg and mostly frozen fruit for weeks now and the kids hoover up the apples and bananas.

midwestspring · 20/03/2020 16:40

Banana bread in the oven.
Hope it is edible when it comes out.

SilverySurfer · 20/03/2020 16:42

I did find a manky potato yesterday which I had to bin, otherwise, only peelings so far.

ILoveAnOwl · 20/03/2020 16:43

I have just rescued some slightly dubious looking leeks from the bin where my husband put them. I shall be (washing them, obviously) making Leek and potato soup tomorrow!!

Fedupandpoor · 20/03/2020 16:44

Woo hoo! I can keep my houmous!

BarkandCheese · 20/03/2020 16:45

I’ve now turned my sweet potatoes into soup and added a few old bits of chorizo for flavour and I can say it’s very nice indeed. I’m glad I’m not the only one with a freezer full of ice poles, I’m trying to decide if I should evict them or not. They’re okay to refreeze aren’t they?

EmmaOvary · 20/03/2020 16:48

I'm actually quite enjoying being frugal/resourceful. Found some old granola in the back of the cupboard and plan to make granola cookies out of it. Planning weird meals out of stuff about to go off. And what with having more time on my hands, and unsure of what will be available, im more acutely aware of what is in the fridge etc, so I don't forget about it until it's inedible.

LuckyAmy1986 · 20/03/2020 16:49

@Fedupandpoor Grin

MitebiteonFrightNite · 20/03/2020 16:50

Bark yes, they'll be fine so I would evict them if I needed the space, but my DCs are enjoying the novelty of having one for pudding at the minute so I'll leave mine in there for now!

BarkandCheese · 20/03/2020 16:54

Thanks, I think I’ll evict them, my DD isn’t that keen on them it’s actually DH who buys them but he only eats them when it’s over 25 degrees.

GinnyStrupac · 20/03/2020 16:55

I think all the missing milk is being stockpiled in freezers, sadly.

It's a pity these people can't be hunted down by herds of angry cows.

Watch out, there's a hoof coming to knock on your doors, guilty parties.

Chemenger · 20/03/2020 16:57

Presumably the people who are stripping supermarkets of every gram of fresh veg and meat are not on here because they’re too busy hoarding the internet as well by continuously downloading high definition films.

viccat · 20/03/2020 16:59

A bit of lettuce but sadly that's not unusual, it always wilts before it's all used up.

MitebiteonFrightNite · 20/03/2020 17:00

I will confess to having a 4 pinter in my big freezer, as well as a loaf of bread, but I always have and always will since the first time I struggled getting bread and milk when it snowed. It's not the same loaf/bottle obviously. I do frequently defrost and replace it!

PollyPocketLucyLocket · 20/03/2020 17:07

@Ninkanink - I need you to come and live in my kitchen, via permanent video call.

I have a some random bits of whatever DH has managed to scrape up from the dregs of what's left at the supermarket. I don't want to waste anything that is about to turn either, however I'm not usually very good with this.
Who knows when I'm able to do a proper shop.

Ninkanink · 20/03/2020 17:09

PollyPocket Grin post what you’ve got here and I’ll happily make some suggestions!

fishonabicycle · 20/03/2020 17:18

It's weird because no-one here admits to being one of the total twats who have been clearing the shelves, but statically there must be a load of them posting.

midwestspring · 20/03/2020 17:57

Banana bread is going down well with the family.

HerRoyalNotness · 20/03/2020 17:58

Not yet. But DH made some soup the other day and I had a rotten stomach that night. It might have been the cheese or something else, but I’m blaming the soup. I won’t be eating the leftovers
