Admit it - anyone thrown away food they bought recently?

Lots of people including me are saying how hard it is getting in some places to buy fresh vegetables and meat. So admit it. Has anyone recently bought too much and ended up throwing it away?

I threw three strawberries away today. Yesterday they looked very tired, today they pegged it. I feel a bit guilty, always do about wasting food but at least I ate most of them.

Our dinner tonight, made with one leftover breast of peri peri chicken (plenty of protein for 2 people).

1/2 courgette, 1/3 red pepper, 1 garlic clove, 3 sun dried tomato slices from a jar, tiny bit of tomato purée, smoked paprika, oregano and chilli flakes, sautéed in olive oil plus the leftover chicken jelly from the pan. Bag of salad needed using soon, so half of it went in at the end and wilted down (we’ll have the other half tomorrow in BLTs). Added pasta, a little bit of cooking water and a drizzle of e.v. Olive oil.

Was very tasty. We have taken our portion of pasta down from 100g to 75 pp recently. I have a smaller portion than my DH so it works out about right for each of us.

Other half of courgette will either be used in the next few days or chopped up and frozen, and the red pepper will be used in tuna crunch sandwiches on Monday. Leftover chicken leg has been frozen and will be used to make a chicken and chorizo stew.

I’ve started a thread for menu planning, leftover meal ideas, tips on how to extend your food supply, what foods can and can’t be frozen, expiry dates etc. If anyone wants to join in, please do!

@Xiaoxiong Thank you I wont be able to get OH to try it but I eat alost anything

speakout · 22/03/2020 12:53

No if anything I am throwing away less food as I realise how precious it is.
I am monitoring everything in the fridge to make sure I use things coming to their use by date, using up leftovers.

Fruitteatime · 22/03/2020 15:23

We have thrown away a tub of houmous dated 1st March and half chewed food from 1 year old ds. Trying to give him a couple of bits at a time so I can put in the fridge what he doesn't eat.

alreadytaken · 23/03/2020 21:47

made vegetable soup with left over veg and the bits we dont normally use - now have indigestion Smile

Fruitteatime · 29/03/2020 18:20

Also seven slices of bread thrown away today. It was meant to be our lunch Sad it also had todays date on it so I thought it would be fine!

Bingeslayer · 29/03/2020 18:24

Yes but not because I bought to much, bought a casserole mix veg to make but was then ill for 2 days and didn't realise they had a use by date instead of best before.

wavecatcher · 29/03/2020 18:25

Not at all we are being extra careful with our food and making it stretch.

BruceAndNosh · 29/03/2020 18:31

Nope, stuff goes in freezer if it's not going to eaten within next couple of days.
My husband has learnt to ignore use by dates on bread and milk because at least half the time its been frozen

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 29/03/2020 18:32

After using Gousto recipe boxes for a while, I use a lot less meat per portion

YgritteSnow · 29/03/2020 18:34

As if anyone is going to admit it after the way posters are being ripped apart all over MN for far lesser transgressions.

TigerJoy · 29/03/2020 18:37

We usually bin loads of food because we're disorganised

Given we are both self isolating I made a plan for this weeks food and we're getting through everything

We're not always sticking to it but knowing we can't just pop out for something we fancy is good and we've learned better habits. Mostly. We've still had a takeaway when we were both feeling too ill to cook.

But then we didnt stock pile, just a biggish shop for us.

flooredbored · 29/03/2020 18:38

Don't ever waste food. I am currently using all suitable vegetable peelings, leftover bones & scraps to make stock for my fussy dogs as a topper for their dry food. They usually get home made but can't get enough meat at the right price at the moment. They are not impressed. Confused Everything else is composted.

ScorpionQueen · 29/03/2020 18:39

I had to throw away some broccoli. I was planning on using it for tonight's dinner but it gone a bit mouldy which was unlucky but not as a result of stockpiling.

Toomboom · 29/03/2020 18:41

Nope, no waste here either. I can't afford to waste food so it all gets used or frozen.. The pp who mentioned hot cross buns going mouldy --- I buy and freeze them individually and use them that way. No waste then.

HeIenaDove · 29/03/2020 18:45

Someone better send the memo to the power companies Just seen someone on Twitter say they will have to replace due to a long power cut.

Ideas will have to be bucked up by some of these power suppliers!

CorianderLord · 29/03/2020 19:03

No, two people at home all day now so we make lunch with anything on it's last legs. I threw away some finger chillis because they had mould near the stalks.

Volcanoblast216 · 04/04/2020 19:16

I'll admit it, we're pretty wasteful at our house and so far it's just been normal. We did stock up and we're strict date people so if something expires on that day in the bin it goes. We've probably binned at least half of what we've bought. We tried to keep stuff but we know we're not eating it so we toss it all in the bin
