Admit it - anyone thrown away food they bought recently?

Lots of people including me are saying how hard it is getting in some places to buy fresh vegetables and meat. So admit it. Has anyone recently bought too much and ended up throwing it away?

My fridge freezer broke so I gave all the food away to my neighbours before it spoiled. Does that count? Just praying that our new one arrives this weekend before all deliveries of non essentials are cancelled.

HerRoyalNotness · 20/03/2020 18:05

What rotten timing @tulipstulips. I hope they pay it forward should you need

Tulipstulips · 20/03/2020 18:33

HerRoyal me too! We’re a tight knit Close so I’m sure they will if we’re in need.

AnotherMurkyDay · 20/03/2020 21:08

Yes because I've been too ill to cook

Siameasy · 20/03/2020 21:18

Really trying not to do have made ridiculous combinations out of leftovers, given stuff away and bullied DH into eating out of date stuff lol

speakout · 20/03/2020 21:22

No. I wouldn't buy more fresh food than I can use.

Megan2018 · 20/03/2020 21:24

Right I actually had the energy to go through mine tonight (posted up thread we had Norovirus this week).
I had to throw out:

Some prepared fruit (we have just started BLW and bought it for convenience to offer small quantities). I’m not risking it on a small baby and it’s not fruit we actually like!
A small amount of cucumber, tomato and lettuce given to the hens
About 1/4 large pot greek yoghurt
Some whole milk (bought for baby to try cows milk)
A couple of mouldy crumpets
Some egg muffins made the day I got ill-possibly contaminated but certainly old

There’s veg that’s over it’s Best Before that looks fine and a load of meat went in to the freezer when we got ill. So not too bad considering we didn’t eat for almost 3 days snd had meal planned.

Growingboys · 20/03/2020 21:24

No way, we are being super sensible with what we have with a view to lasting this out.

But I did throw away a whole bag of spinach the other day that was on the turn. I was about to throw it in the pan to cook with lots of garlic when I saw it said 'Produce of Italy' and I'd just been listening to the news about corona was rampant in Italy. In the bin it went I'm afraid to say.

Lynda07 · 20/03/2020 21:25

I have and feel guilty about it; sometimes I fancy a certain thing and buy it, then don't feel hungry until it's too late. I've stopped doing that now. What does get thrown is away is the remains of a bag of salad leaves or something like that and I don't mind so much because at least I've had some of it.

NotEverythingIsBlackandwhite · 20/03/2020 21:26

Nope. I never throw food away.

Ragwort · 20/03/2020 21:27

No one on Mumsnet is going to admit to throwing away food or stockpiling Grin.

I did throw out about a tablespoon of mashed potato this evening, I had made too much and just didn’t want to eat it. I suppose in theory I could have saved it to serve with another meal ... but I didn’t. Blush.

PickAChew · 20/03/2020 21:32

I threw away the manky remains of a head of broccoli, yesterday. Was going to cook it up but it was rather floppy and didn't smell good.

Rhapsodyinpurple · 20/03/2020 21:32

I've thrown less away than usual. Very conscious of the shortages at the moment and have eaten things (slightly soggy cereal etc) that I would otherwise have thrown away.

I do admit to buying more dog food (an extra box) than I normally would have done. We can live on soup etc, but she can't.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 20/03/2020 21:35

I hardly buy fresh food 😬 I've just got huge freezers, which I do a big shop for every 4 weeks. As there's normally only 2 of us I've ended up with quite a frozen collection! As I'm always ordering more than we eat anyway.

So I reckon we can last off that for ages. Got 2 loaves of bread in there too.

In February shop I got this huge tub thing of cous cous, as we were using the packets and one was too much for me, so ended up throwing some away every time.

Already had a load of cheese in fridge. Only thing I'm running low on is eggs. I love omelette. Got 6 left.

I will admit that my husband has stockpiled Easter mini egg cakes. We have 6 boxes! 🙄

PickAChew · 20/03/2020 21:38

most veg can keep a long time if stored properly.

In contrast to the sad, whiffy broccoli, I used up a couple of red onions, this afternoon, that had been in the bottom of the fridge since before Christmas - dated 13th December. They were absolutely perfect.

Theyrecomingtotakemeawayhaha · 20/03/2020 21:42

I cleared my fridge out of the things at the back, thing that were nevereant to be green.Embarassingly these have been there since before we really knew about CV.
Now I am emptying, dating, sorting and using fridge items before they go off.Its getting easier as choice narrows.
I also have lots of small single portions of left over meals so easy for DD to have for lunch now that school is closed.

Whathappenedtothelego · 20/03/2020 21:43

I had to throw away a couple of mouldy cherry tomatoes covered in white fluff. I carefully washed and cooked the rest - I might have just thrown the whole pack away in less frugal times. But the rest were actually fine.
I have been stretching out everything as much as I can with smaller portions, trying to make it last as long as possible.
We are in self isolation - fresh veg and bread will both run out this weekend but luckily I always have a well-stocked cupboard, so we will be dipping into that for another week until we are allowed out again. I've been a bit taken aback at how much gets eaten when the whole family is at home 24/7 - normally we would all have a big meal at work or school.

speakout · 20/03/2020 21:48

I hardly buy fresh food

Wow. I am surprised that anyone lives like that.
Fresh food constitutes more than 50 % of my family's diet.
What about fruit and veg?
I know that frozen stuff is quite nutritious, but salad? greens? Fruit?
We are a family of 5, We eat 10 cucumbers a week, 3Kg fresh tomatoes, 3 heads of lettuce, couple of bags or radish , a few boxes of cress, 2Kg carrots, a head of cabbage, bag of bean sprouts, two bunches of broccoli, a head of celery, two bundles of spring onions., a fist of ginger, 8 bulbs of garlic, two bags of coriander, same of basil,10 peppers, 20 apples, 15 bananas, six punnets of soft fruit and loads of nectarines, plums , grapes etc.
Am I missing something?

Sexnotgender · 20/03/2020 22:02

I threw out some mouldy beetroot earlier. I bought it months ago and forgot about it.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 20/03/2020 22:13

@speakout I only eat bananas fruit wise.

Veg I have the little frozen bags you chuck in the microwave, or ready chopped frozen vegetables. Onions, tomatoes, peppers, butternut squash etc.

Sometimes I buy curly kale and asparagus but that's about it. Mostly eggs and milk I need fresh.

T0tallyFuckedUpFamily · 20/03/2020 23:41

Oh dear. I take back my claim that I haven’t wasted anything. I just found four hotdogs swimming in a putrid mess, in the back of my fridge. That wasn’t from me overbuying, but just from me being a dirty hallion. Blush

Sexnotgender · 21/03/2020 06:58

That wasn’t from me overbuying, but just from me being a dirty hallion.

Yip, my beetroot met the same fate.
YABU for buying hotdogs in the first place thoughEnvy

AhoyMrBeaver · 21/03/2020 07:06

Our mindset has changed a bit. We think carefully before using ingredients - is it necessary, could this be used better in another meal, if I add it would it mean there would be worthwhile leftovers...?

We've been making and freezing sofrito, so we haven't been throwing away sad-looking celery and carrots as we normally would.

Ninkanink · 21/03/2020 10:29

Last night’s dinner. Super yummy and so easy.

Nachos - cheapest Aldi tortilla chips, leftover portion of chilli, little bit of grated cheddar cheese, served with avocado dressed with lemon, and leftover ranch dressing dip. Garnished with jalapeño slices, fresh red chilli, spring onion from the freezer, coriander and lime.

Admit it - anyone thrown away food they bought recently?
