Admit it - anyone thrown away food they bought recently?

Lots of people including me are saying how hard it is getting in some places to buy fresh vegetables and meat. So admit it. Has anyone recently bought too much and ended up throwing it away?

@Spam88 I dare not put any more salt in 😂😂 it has more salt and pepper than I'd care to admit ! Ironically I made it and some homemade bread as a healthy lunch full of veg to sustain us 🤦🏻‍♀️🤦🏻‍♀️

Xiaoxiong · 20/03/2020 13:41

I bought fruit and then the veg box was delivered with a load of the same fruit... so I am donating the surplus to the local first school which is putting together food parcels for their kids on FSM. So I'm quite glad I overbought now!

awesomeaircraft · 20/03/2020 13:42

Actually weighing our carbs (50g dry per adult - hope this is right) so we don't overuse what we do have. Also trying to frugal with what we do have in the house.

I would not expect the stock of panic buyers to mould yet (or anyone to own up!). It is too recent and most veg can keep a long time if stored properly.

Troels · 20/03/2020 13:43

Try putting some worcestershire sauce in. Hides the blandness.
Nothing but tea bags and potato peeling in the waste for us lately. I went to get our nomal weekly shop and couldn't get it all, so we are eating everything we have. I get frozen veg so no waste there.

fussychica · 20/03/2020 13:44

Half a loaf that had gone mouldy. Had frozen half but thought we would eat the rest but when I came to make lunch today it had gone off. Sell by date was yesterday so wasn't impressed. Other than that nothing I can think of.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 20/03/2020 13:45

Nope, because I'm shopping as normal.

Even if we lockdown you're still allowed out to buy food so I haven't found it necessary to buy extra.

Spam88 · 20/03/2020 13:46

We have some parsnips in the fridge that are well past their best and destined for the bin (bought before this all kicked off) but I've been inspired to make them into soup!

alloutoffucks · 20/03/2020 13:47

I have lost weight since all this started.

CuriousaboutSamphire · 20/03/2020 13:49

No, I too am shopping as normal, when I can find shelves our normal foods on!

And we are freezing back left overs, will be creative with them next week, once we have been through the fridge and cupboards and made a note of what we have lurking!

BeijingBikini · 20/03/2020 13:49

Nope. There's 2 of us and we finish everything.

Actually I lie, today I found a 2-week old box of leftover coleslaw that I had to chuck.

Fivefourthree · 20/03/2020 13:52

Frugality Central here. Nothing gets wasted.

IfIWereYou · 20/03/2020 13:53

You can?! Do you have to crack them first? I feel like they’d burst out of their shells when they froze

I've frozen eggs before in their shell. They make excellent weapons in a sock. Apparently...

LonginesPrime · 20/03/2020 14:00

I've thrown away one mouldy grape to save the rest of the bunch. Sad times. I love grapes.

Ninkanink · 20/03/2020 14:40

No, none at all. We pretty much never do, as we plan very carefully to ensure we don’t waste food (and money). We always make meals with leftovers and freeze everything that we don’t use.

Tonight we’re having chilli nachos (tortilla chips layered with chilli and cheese, topped with sliced jalapeños, crushed avocado, sour cream and pico de gallo), using up the last portion of chilli I made with 500g of mince at the beginning of the week. Two portions have already gone into the freezer to make two more meals at a later date. We had chilli and rice with avocado when it was first made, then a couple of days later chilli and wedges with chipotle ranch dressing dip, and now, the nachos. So that one lot of chilli has done us for five meals.

There is a pot of yoghurt in the fridge which needs using up. We used some of it to make a raita a week or two ago, and the rest of it is going to be used tomorrow to make tandoori chicken.

The other day when I was cooking peri peri chicken and med veg I noticed that one of the aubergines in the fridge was looking worse for wear. So I sliced it up and popped it into the oven to roast with the rest of the food, and later, froze it. That will be used with a portion of beef/pork mince in garlic and tomato sauce which I froze last week; I’ll layer it up with pasta and make a lasagne.

We each had a joint from the peri peri chicken, and saved one leg and one breast. The breast and the leftover juices from the pan will be used to make a pasta dish tomorrow, with a courgette that’s waiting in the fridge for that purpose. Now that there’s room in the freezer since I’ve used some of the leeks and mushrooms, I’ll freeze the chicken leg which will be used for a chicken and chorizo paella-style dish. I’ll use one third of the chorizo sausage, and make two more meals with the rest over the next couple of weeks.

Last week I made braised red cabbage to use up what was left of a red cabbage from over a month ago (they last a long time!). I also used an apple that was past its best and half a jar of cranberry sauce leftover from Christmas. There was a small amount of that left, so on Saturday I am going to make a meal of turkey steaks rolled around Christmas stuffing (a packet that we picked up at Sainsbury’s for 20p a couple of weeks ago) and wrapped in bacon - we have four of those in the freezer, which will make two meals. I’ll use some Brussels sprouts from the freezer and a few potatoes left in a bag from last week will make enough roasties for the two of us.

We’ve just had a potato hash for lunch as there were some baby potatoes which needed using ASAP - I brought them home when I last visited my daughters as they weren’t going to use them and I didn’t want them to go to waste. They were sprouting a fair bit so I boiled them up yesterday while I was cooking dinner. Today I sautéed them in butter with some bacon, mushrooms and leeks from the freezer, and two eggs mixed in at the end. It made a very delicious lunch. After I had opened the packet of bacon I realised that another already opened one was hiding under a pile of meat, so to ensure that the previously opened bacon doesn’t go to waste I’ll do us a cooked breakfast tomorrow and find another use for the last few rashers - probably add them to the aforementioned Brussels sprouts. I’ll portion out the newly opened bacon into separate bags and freeze.

I’ve got two ends of a loaf drying out now which I will blitz into breadcrumbs in a couple of days time. That will be used to make pork schnitzel with slices of pork loin from the freezer.

If we ever do have a rare week or two where we lose track of what’s in the fridge or just end up having takeaway a few times or whatever the case may be, we will make up a big batch of minestrone with anything that’s past its best so none of the vegetables/greens/salads go to waste.

Open packets of herbs that aren’t going to be used up within a few days are frozen so that we’ve got a wide range available when needed.

And so on and so forth.

alloutoffucks · 20/03/2020 14:44

I should have known that nobody would admit it. Someone must be hoovering up the fresh fruit and veg and meat like it was Armageddon.

OP posts:
Ninkanink · 20/03/2020 14:47

Yes, probably the same people who think 60 rolls of toilet paper or 40 tins of baby formula is a reasonable amount for one person to buy during a crisis like this...

I love planning and making good meals using every last scrap of food. I really feel irritated if I ever have to throw anything out.

Number3or4 · 20/03/2020 15:15

No, but I’m making less food as my freezer is almost full. Mostly because I tend to give birth early and I don’t want to be caught out again. Dh is going a bit funny and has spoken about possibly starting to rationing milk when we have 1 bottle of milk left.

teenmumandsowhat · 20/03/2020 15:23

Just some vine tomatoes that went ridiculously mouldy overnight,
Currently whole family in self isolation. (Dc with possible symptoms & I’m at risk due to medical condition) so therefore I have made the strictest meal plan I ever have, making sure that I use as much as I have already at home, and the fewest possible extra groceries needed.

Ninkanink · 20/03/2020 15:24

Our freezer is full too, so we won’t buy anything more until we’ve used some of what’s in there. We’re planning no shopping trips/deliveries at all in the next two weeks, possibly three if we can manage it.

midwestspring · 20/03/2020 15:27

We are definitely eating more OP.
Dc and DH all at home full time, everyone both stressed and bored simultaneously.
That said I have very spotty bananas, usually I would bin them but I will be making muffins with them instead.

Yogawoogie · 20/03/2020 15:29

A papaya. I am disgusted with myself. I can never look at one in the same way again.

We haven’t stock piled but keep a stocked larder.

Ninkanink · 20/03/2020 15:30

Spotty bananas (even better, properly mushy ones) make the best cakes/muffins/pancakes. It’s just extra sugars.

I’m going to make a banana loaf this afternoon, to use up three of the bananas that have been ripening nicely for the past 4-5 days. Usually I’d use all 4 but I’ll keep 1 to make pancakes with tomorrow. Smile

Fedupandpoor · 20/03/2020 15:31

I'm considering throwing away the houmus I just bought from Lidl Sad, It had the cardboard sleeve around it but when I opened the plastic tub there was no peel off plastic layer. I already ate the red pepper houmus and I'm sure that had a peel off layer. I realise this is a massive first world problem.

caperplips · 20/03/2020 15:32

No we're at home full time since last week, working from home and we have not wasted a thing so far! I have made soups, baked and made dinners that can last more than 1 night. We're eating incredibly well compared to the midweek rush of working full time.

Wish it could be a bit more like this all the time, without the threat of life threatening illness of course!

ChilliMayo · 20/03/2020 15:33

No. We are changing meal plans and cooking food near to best before in order not to waste. A few examples -
On Wed frozen pie was changed to chilled chargrilled chicken with a bbe of 19th
Cooked too much pasta last night (dh, not me) so it was bolognaise last night and carbonara tonight. Tough shit, dh.
Bacon that had been in fridge quite a few days was cooked, chopped and frozen ready for use in future carbonaras and in pies.
Gives me more to think about whilst socially distancing.
