The List of Keyworkers is here

The long-awaited list of keyworkers who will be expected to continue to send their children to school is here:

www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-maintaining-educational-provision/guidance-for-schools-colleges-and-local-authorities-on-maintaining-educational-provision

Tbh it seems that it would have been quicker to list people who aren’t keyworkers. It’s going to be way more than schools were expecting and I’m not sure how we’ll cope.

Well that’s nearly everyone.

What’s the point of going through all the stress on closing?

Ooh, they've neatly dodged providing a definitive answer on the one parent/two parent question. That'll create a headache for a lot of schools.

We are/were planning to sending all MAT students (5 schools) to one of the schools...

IT/data and financial services are both major sectors locally, so that could have a major impact on numbers. I'm hoping employers will be reasonable about how many people they need, especially physically in the office.

It's not clear to me how they're defining "essential" within the last rather broad category. Some call centre staff are definitely essential, but I'm not sure eg coldcalling for an insurance company is completely essential right now Confused

Agreed! Mine and DH's jobs technically come under there but as I'm on mat leave I'll keep my DC home
But yeah I'm sure over half the population fall under those categories!

But it isn’t everyone in most of those sectors. It’s only those who are essential to keeping the service running. That’s going to be a fairly small % of staff at eg a utility company.

Note this bit: If workers think they fall within the critical categories above they should confirm with their employer that, based on their business continuity arrangements, their specific role is necessary for the continuation of this essential public service.. I wonder how many employers have decided yet who’s essential and who’s not.

I think they’re regretting closing schools... every job is on that list!

Does that mean hairdressers and nail techs are out? Hopefully the people in my town will start paying attention.

Nursery told me this morning that DS couldn't go as DH is a key worker (a teacher!) and I'm not, which I'm fine with, WFH with a 20 month old is going to be interesting, but I agree he shouldn't be going as it's not necessary. But I think the interesting conversation will be that I think our childminder (we use both a childminder and a nursery) will be quite keen that he does still go there (or at least that it should be us actively not sending him, not her closing to us) as then there's no question that we should pay, so I wonder if she'll be very keen to suggest that we do, by this guidance, 'count'...

So schools are not really closed!

I think they’ll allow one parent key worker as they risk them resigning or missing out on tax revenue from the other, often higher paid, parent. Funny how key workers are amongst the lowest paid, while the highest paid are often not so essential.

Ooh, they've neatly dodged providing a definitive answer on the one parent/two parent question.

They haven’t said it clearly no. But it says if your child can possibly be kept at home then they should be. And it also says you only get a place if your job’s essential and “you cannot keep your child safe at home”. So I imagine schools will be expecting the child to be looked after by the non key worker parent if there is one.

Majority of people do fall under them categories and i know there will be loads still in school next week it will just be very understaffed
I feel sorry for the nhs teachers and charities that are trying so hard picking up the pieces for the government

Also it doesnt say being on that list guarantees anything. It says you will be prioritised for childcare.

They will have it like that to give the schools/councils flexibility over who they prioritise because you might have one school where you've got 30 nurses for mums and another where you've got 2.
If they dont give that flexibility you will end up with schools keeping spaces open for non existent nurses that dont live there. When instead they could provide that support to parents working in other sectors.

So we’ll be teaching full time for half the school AND providing home learning work ANDZ updating online distance learning AND be told we have to work unpaid through the holiday Hmm

So I imagine schools will be expecting the child to be looked after by the non key worker parent if there is one.

I imagine that too. And I imagine they'll have a lot of arguments on their hands about it because the guidance doesn't explicitly say that.

They may redistribute the children in that scenario so there’s 16 children in each school. School is now childcare basically.

I know Lisa it’s quite spineless of the guidance writers not to be explicit.

Wow. That is a big list. Every member of my family is classed as a key worker under that - me, DH and two adult kids. We have no school kids though.

Regarding the both patent bit,

If a child needs specialist support, is vulnerable or has a parent who is a critical worker, then educational provision will be available for them

Ie it states a parent, not both parents

They'll get a lot of 'but my kids can't stay home because then DH will lose his job', and so a lot of arguments about what 'can't' means

Blimey, that's pretty much all of us bar hospitality, a few civil servants, and politicians! (Someone please remind me again what [most] politicians get paid for, as I'm really having problems right now understanding it.)
