The List of Keyworkers is here

The long-awaited list of keyworkers who will be expected to continue to send their children to school is here:

www.gov.uk/government/publications/coronavirus-covid-19-maintaining-educational-provision/guidance-for-schools-colleges-and-local-authorities-on-maintaining-educational-provision

Tbh it seems that it would have been quicker to list people who aren’t keyworkers. It’s going to be way more than schools were expecting and I’m not sure how we’ll cope.

Does a lawyer count as those essential to the running of the justice system?

noblegiraffe · 20/03/2020 01:11

The supermarkets are desperately hiring more staff too, so we will see the list of qualifying kids increase as their parents lose their restaurant job and move to the supermarket.

That would be very circumstance dependant I imagine. I'm a lawyer and I'm absolutely not essential, but magistrates, judges, CPS lawyers, jurors etc may well be.

ThisMustBeMyDream · 20/03/2020 01:15

Get some sleep teachers.... ready for tomorrows absolute shit show.

Can not believe that list. My boyfriend thought he would be out of a job. He ia mat leave cover as an NQT and only started in Jan through an agency. He's been told he was likely to be let go as 3 form entry school, other yr 4 teachers can do his job. And they couldn't justify paying him for being "off".

Looks like he may have a final reprieve in the morning. I want to ring him and wake him as he has been SO stressed (and facing financial ruin). But I will wait til 5am when he gets up for his very long day... please keep your fingers crossed for him!

StSaulOfSnacks · 20/03/2020 01:15

Oh fuck. I'd better get some sleep. It will he a long day tomorrow.

HesMyLobster · 20/03/2020 01:16

I think the list necessarily has to be broad. It just requires people to behave sensibly and decently.

Yep.
The government yet again putting all the responsibility into the public's hands instead of theirs.

The state of the supermarkets doesn't fill me with hope 🤦🏻‍♀️

Jenasaurus · 20/03/2020 01:17

They dont mention Bank Staff, I am assuming banks will be able to close too if considered non essential.

cabbageking · 20/03/2020 01:18

School has to prioritise this list based on capacity they can manage and hence not all these may be catered for at the home school or even from Monday.

DippyAvocado · 20/03/2020 01:19

FFS! Well, I'll be going to work as usual then along with pretty much all the other staff we have fit and my kids will have to go to their school which will now be 75% full and we will all be at just as much risk as before.

So we’ll be teaching full time for half the school AND providing home learning work ANDZ updating online distance learning AND be told we have to work unpaid through the holiday hmm

Yup!

DBML · 20/03/2020 01:20

We’ve had a mad week creating activities for remote learning. Literally waking at 6am and not stopping until 1am. Working through breaks and lunch. It’s been insane.

May as well have just kept the school open.

caringcarer · 20/03/2020 01:39

My child goes to a special school where all children have a personal plan. So all can continue to go to school. We have been told by school as some parents are choosing to keep their child at home that the children who do go to school will not do normal lessons. I asked what tnis means but got no response. If they are just going to sit them in front of a DVD I will keep child at home and teach him myself.

MovinOnUp · 20/03/2020 01:39

Would opticians count as key workers via NHS, Do you think?
It's a private practice but does NHS testing and optical triage for the local doctors surgery.

EYProvider · 20/03/2020 01:39

Are the government paying for these places in the private sector?

There are about 14 children registered at my nursery who will qualify. Of those 14, maybe 8 will attend, and my understanding is that we have to provide childcare for them.

But it will cost us more to provide care for 8 kids than the fees will bring in. Who will make up the shortfall?

HeIenaDove · 20/03/2020 01:52

@Angryrant55 Im glad about the post office as they are a Pay Point.

HeIenaDove · 20/03/2020 01:52

Wow What a mess.

DippyAvocado · 20/03/2020 02:01

I can't sleep for worrying about this now. I foresee having to be in work as much as, if not more than normal at the same time as trying to manage remote learning. Did they specify opening hours? If we are expected to provide wraparound care too then I will be potentially supervising kids from 8-5 then preparing resources and setting home learning on top of that. I think I'm going to see less of my own children than I do now. I had been prepared to keep working through the holidays but I won't be doing it if I'm doing just as much during term time as I am now.

How can all financial service workers be considered essential?

We already have several staff members who are not able to work because they are on the vulnerable list.

BlowOnMySackbutt · 20/03/2020 02:05

How can all financial service workers be considered essential?

Dealing with fraud on your bank account, payment service regulation breaches, getting your money back after being scammed, making sure direct debits go out, etc. They're the A & E of financial health.

DippyAvocado · 20/03/2020 02:07

information technology and data infrastructure sector

This a a huge sector.

Gooseysgirl · 20/03/2020 02:20

We needed this list at 9am on Thursday morning (I work for a LA Education and Inclusion team). It is embarrassing how badly this whole situation is being handled. My Irish family and friends are incredulous...

WishMyNameWasWittyNotShitty · 20/03/2020 02:27

I can't take it seriously when there are government depts where staff can work from home aren't being allowed to, and it doesn't seem to be that there is any preparation to allow to.....farce!

kateandme · 20/03/2020 02:34

in my cousin country they are sorting quick access to job hiring of university(escpecially of driving age) students.those who dont have a key worker job but have childcare so can now work in the key working rolls, to help on the front line of things.so in supermarket stocking or delivery etc, butchers and that type of thing.cousin young lad has said its been a bit of saviour fo him to at least have a purpose.some on full contact as obviously they need more but also on relief contract for if worker of course have to at some point go into isolations.
is this something our government is thinking of.

Theresnoroomonmybroom · 20/03/2020 02:34

I think they need to have a points system so that each school/nursery would decide how many children they are able to care for safely and then the la/gov allocates points for each set of circumstances. Then the families with the total number of points gets the places till the places are full and then parents can apply to other schools/nurseries for places. That way each area/school would be caring for the children/families who need it most.

The other difficulty is funding. I’m in an nhs clinical role but my child only attends nursery part time with grandparents previously doing the wraparound care. Now that’s not an option, it will cost more than I earn to go to work with the increase in hours and I’d be better off taking unpaid leave but my role is critical. It’s all such a muddle.

EYProvider · 20/03/2020 02:39

@Theresnoroomonmybroom - My understanding is that the government are paying for these places, but it’s all so muddled that I’m not entirely sure.

My local authority approached me today about providing places which they are supposed to be paying for. But they weren’t very sure either.

barnabybenny · 20/03/2020 02:48

This is massively confusing - it reads as though if one parent is a key worker then they send their kids to school regardless of what the other one does. There will be parents who take the piss by sitting at home and sending their kids in to school at this rate.

Obviously it means that if one parent is at home then they can care for the children but Boris is expecting parents to not be selfish about this and exercise some caution. - the behaviour of the general public around social distancing and the panic buying is indicative of this fact.

I'm so worried, it looks like (as a teacher) I'll still be expected to go to school every day, work throughout my holidays as a babysitter whilst my child go to their school to have a teacher there doing the same. I'm also expected to continue with providing work for my students and giving feedback.

Maybe it would work better if teacher parents were expected to stay at home with their own child to reduce the number of children actually in school. I feel as if I have to compromise the safety of my own children to babysit other children who could easily stay at home. I know the guidelines say that all should stay at home where possible but people just won't observe that, especially lazy parents.

Amber2019 · 20/03/2020 03:00

I've had the letter from nursery to fill in for me and ny partner. Spaces are limited, you've to write jobs, roles, working hours and why you cant keep your child home in anyway. They will then prioritise the most needed. So not all will get a place. My partners job isnt on the list I'd imagine. Van delivery drivers arent essential and I'm a stay at home mum so I womt be taking his normal place.
