AIBU to remind people to be mindful of their contraception...

It strikes me that some people might struggle getting repeat prescriptions for the pill, or not able to pick it up or get it delivered, fresh depo shots might not be available on time etc.

And so, given we may end up locked down, and there may be shortages of supplies (pill, condom etc) to be mindful of this so that we don't end up with a lot of unplanned Coronavirus isolation babies in 9 months.

Depending on how things go, access to the MAP, and terminations may be patchy also, so just to remind people to be extra vigilant and to buy in some emergency condoms ;-)

Fully agree - and a reminder that antibiotics can mess with the efficacy of the contraceptive pill, so use an additional method if you're on antibiotics for any reason.

RedSheep73 · 19/03/2020 14:20

One of many reasons to be grateful for mirena! don't even start me worrying about medicine shortages though

MushroomTree · 19/03/2020 14:22

I managed to get to the clinic and get a 6 month supply of my ring this morning. But given that my FWB is self isolating for the foreseeable future due to health issues I don't think contraception is going to be my primary concern Grin

Hoggleludo · 19/03/2020 14:36

I reckon like the 1999-2000 thing. There's going to be a flood of babies. As people will be bored etc. Guarantee it

Youdreamedmydreamforme · 19/03/2020 14:43

Wow. Just wow. You felt the need to start a thread about this? Really!?

formerbabe · 19/03/2020 14:44

I reckon like the 1999-2000 thing

What thing?

formerbabe · 19/03/2020 14:45

Wow. Just wow. You felt the need to start a thread about this? Really!?

Why the outrage? The op is making a really important point.

Upsidedownfrown · 19/03/2020 14:50

I'm on my last strip of pills now and had an appointment at family planning to get more next week but am in isolation. Had to ring gp who have never prescribed contraceptive to me before. Explained situation and they're happily sending a prescription through to the pharmacy. Helps that I have a blood pressure machine at home so I could reassure them it was all good.

This was actually one of the first things I worried about when isolation started!

JasonBrun · 19/03/2020 14:50

Especially with the self isolating. My DS is from Snowmaggeddon, and there were a lot of babies born around him. That was only a 3 days storm.

Purpleartichoke · 19/03/2020 14:57

I do think it’s an important message. My pregnancy put me i the hospital repeatedly. I wouldn’t want to risk a pregnancy right now.

PumpkinP · 19/03/2020 14:57

I’m glad to be single. Can people really not control themselves, sex would literally be the last thing on my mind

littlemissalwaystired · 19/03/2020 14:58

As a midwife I agree with this fully!! I hope condoms are being stockpiled as much as bread, eggs and loo roll. We're on our knees as it is, give us a baby boom at Christmas and we all might just have a breakdownGrin

arethereanyleftatall · 19/03/2020 15:00

Ah, if people panic buy/stock pile condoms, there won't be enough for everybody. Just stop it.

Notredamn · 19/03/2020 15:11

Thanks for your sage advice, I'd have ended up knocked up if you hadn't started this thread Hmm

Member984815 · 19/03/2020 15:12

This is such a good point

Marmite27 · 19/03/2020 15:12

DH had this thought a couple of days ago. I got 6 packs of the pill in January and he’s had the snip!

chockaholic72 · 19/03/2020 15:15

@PumpkinP - I’m single too, but in scary times like this, it’s human nature to seek affection and comfort from those you love. Look at babies born in famine or in refugee camps. Love comes to the fore in times of strife.

IdentifyasTired · 19/03/2020 15:15

Good idea OP.

On a not entirely unrelated note, it might be a good time to buy a menstrual cup if anyone is concerned about shortages of pads and tampons in the supermarket or in the event of self isolation.
It's one less thing to think about in any case.

halcyondays · 19/03/2020 15:18

I expect they’re anticipating a baby boom down the line.
Conveniently I got a Mirena coil put in in January to help my heavy periods.

GabsAlot · 19/03/2020 15:22

i have an appt at sh clinic next month thats when i run out of the pill-ive already told dh its off the table if that happens
not literally

Youdreamedmydreamforme · 19/03/2020 15:25

@formerbabe because it’s none of the OPs business. It’s just ludicrous to me to worry about other people’s contraception. Curtain twitching at its finest.

GabsAlot · 19/03/2020 15:27

really pumpkin if it turns out to be months?

formerbabe · 19/03/2020 15:28

Ah, if people panic buy/stock pile condoms, there won't be enough for everybody. Just stop it

You might call it panic buying...some people might just call it an average weekend Wink

PumpkinP · 19/03/2020 15:29

I haven’t had sex in 3 years like I said the perks of being single. Can’t believe people are thinking about sex at this time Confused

notacooldad · 19/03/2020 15:31
