With talk of London going into lockdown tomorrow can I remind second home owners that Cornwall has one hospital. Devon has four hospitals. Where I live in Devon there is no food in any of the supermarkets. Please, please stay away, our communities cannot deal with an influx.

I've cancelled my Easter holiday. Cost ££ which I'm not getting back.

Nothing about this is anti London or any other city. It's obtuse you suggest that it is.

Please would people just stay at home. The graph for the U.K. is horrific

Aw shucks🤭

UYScuti · 22/03/2020 00:06

Solely Londoners
I refer you to my post
'City dwellers with bolt holes in the country appear to have been a significant vector in this pandemic'

MMN123 · 22/03/2020 00:11

Apologies Scuti - though you said London.

It works both ways and it’s pointless blaming city folk - they are no more significant than country folk, who also travel.

This thread is full of anti city dweller sentiment that is disgusting.

Everyone is impacted. Everyone should not travel.

MarshaBradyo · 22/03/2020 00:13

There’s no point in casting around for other reasons such as ethnicity. What is the profile of second home owners anyway? Wealthy and... People aren’t imagining the mixed lifts of a London hospital when they think about who is turning up.

People need to stop looking around for other excuses and make the simple decision to stay home,

UYScuti · 22/03/2020 00:16

No problemo it is late and I wasn't so much blaming Londoners as blaming 'people with second homes'
Then again maybe I'm just jealous because I don't have a secondhome🤷🏼‍♀️

MMN123 · 22/03/2020 00:18

Ha! Me neither. Maybe in another lifetime.

colouringinpro · 22/03/2020 00:22

We have a house booked in the Lakes soon. We really need a holiday. We'll loose the money. But there's no way I'm putting any of the wonderful people in Cumbria at risk.

MMN123 · 22/03/2020 00:23

Though my sister does. She has a big house in a naice village in the country and a tiny cottage in a village in a hillier and marginally more picturesque part of the country - half an hours drive away from her main home.

I’ve always found it odd. It’s not used as a holiday let. Sometimes I wonder if it’s for when she and her husband have a row, so one of them has somewhere to stomp off to that isn’t inconvenient. Seemed an odd choice when they bought it. I’d rather stomp to a hotel personally, should stomping be required. Though I’m not much of a stomper really.

But good luck to them - whatever floats their boat!

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 22/03/2020 00:39

Colouring Cumbria needs more people like you right now. Those who really love the place will stay away. Thank you
Our local hospital has already had one death due to Corona virus. A relatives friend died on Friday, he died because he couldn't access the treatment he needed in a bigger hospital. This was because of the corona virus. He didn't even have it! The consequences of this are going to E far reaching, many will die as a result of issues branching off from the virus itself. Where I am we have 4 ICU beds. Our hospital serves at least 100000 people. The ICU beds are full.

Astrid09 · 22/03/2020 06:18

I'm so angry about this I live in Wales and people are turning up in caravans and others getting much needed delivey items delivered and bragging they got away from London. The one received local food address are being past round so the locals get their needed items first. Wales has few local hospitals most minor injury these people are awful and need to go home. It's not a bloody holiday!!!!

Astrid09 · 22/03/2020 06:32

@Toomuchtrouble4me your the one that chose to live in London even with you and your child being asthmatic you say your dad was stressing him being alone , the are thousands in the same bloody position they are still staying put and keeping contact other ways. Your selfish move to your holiday home puts extra pressure on that local hospital, they are equipped for their own people only, if everyone who has asthma does the same and goes to their holiday home in the same area as you, tell me how are local food delivery and local hospitals cope??? Your taking from the local people who put into their community all year round not once or twice are year. I believe locals should be treated in hospital over holiday makers and it should be you show your driving licence to be able to get the local food deliveries meant for the local and vulnerable. It's a disgrace the people travelling to holiday homes . I hope boris Johnson does a lockdown and checks everyone should be where they live and work for 50wks of the year.

" Please, please stay away, our communities cannot deal with an influx."
Yet you be sending your sick to city hospitals when yours are overloaded?

All movement needs to stop to give the NHS a chance to catch up. Deaths are going to happen, but let us on here not be any part of the movement making it worse. This is not be a gender, age, race, area, wealth etc. issue. It is in ALL our best interests.

In the change cycle, I think we're past the denial stage and onto sadness and fear (running away) and anger (about movement). I'm going to look for Government petitions about a lockdown, I feel raging angry.

Enough4me · 22/03/2020 08:06

I found it and signed:

Enough4me · 22/03/2020 08:08

If my last post is removed for sharing content that has already been shared on MN or because someone asks for it to be removed. Anyone who wants a lockdown can search for "petitions government lockdown" for themselves.

FrankieManca · 22/03/2020 08:22

I wouldn't be surprised if some of these posters weren't being covertly racist. London is something like 55% non white British background. People on here can't all be unaware of that fact. Why else are they concerned not with anyone travelling anywhere unnecessarily but instead focused on wanting to Keep Londoners Out
My Mum lives in an area mentioned in this thread where huge swathes of cottages are second homes. I have honestly never once seen a non-white family disgorging themselves from the Range Rover on a Friday evening. A second home in the Cotswolds, Cornwall, Suffolk or Norfolk is not a representative multi cultural phenomenon.

Well hopefully the same will apply if you ever need our state of the art heart brain and cancer care hospital at is - how would you feel “sorry, locals only”

Yes - I did choose to stay in London, I was born there, family there and I love it, it’s an amazing city and I love the diversity and the energy of London, plus the opportunities, I suppose that why we are cool with ‘outsiders’ DH works hard and we bought a second home, no laws against that. It wasn’t for a virus bolt hole, we enjoy it.

I SM ISOLATED, I CANNOT ISOLATE IN LONDON BECAUSE DH IS AN ESSENTIAL WORKER. HE COULD NOT COME WITH ME.

Actually where I am the decamped city dwellers are all isolated - we’ve seen it in London and we know the shitstorm that is coming. - the locals here are all out and about chatting, visiting each other, kids playing - Friends from London who are isolated elsewhere are saying the same on the phone - why the HELL aren’t the locals isolating their elderly?
Just because it’s not in your area yet - isolate as much as possible, it will come, 2nd home owners or not, it will come.

As for hospitals - they will ALL be totally overwhelmed, city and rural, all of them, unable to cope, London hospitals are already unable to cope - it will be the same everywhere.

NONE of the first cases were from London btw.

Ask yourselves honestly...
If you truly thought that your dad, probably yourself and maybe your children were going to die, because you could not isolate, and you could drive to somewhere that you could isolate - without seeing any locals at all - would you do it?

If the answer is no, then you just don’t value your family as much as I do.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 22/03/2020 08:49

Astrid09
Look up ‘your’ and ‘you’re’ - find out how to
use them, it will give you something to do whilst isolating - oh no, hold on, you’re not isolating are you? Business as usual
and when it hits your area you can blame the city folk - who ARE isolating.

joystir59 · 22/03/2020 08:56

This us why we need full lock down. Stay away from Scarborough please!!!

joystir59 · 22/03/2020 08:59

Not a problem - will do, absolutely.

Toomuchtrouble4me · 22/03/2020 09:07

I am in the Highlands. Our only village shop has closed this week. Laybys and car parks are filled with camper vans. Most of them don't have any sanitation. The population of our small village has doubled in the last week.

I agree, that’s nuts, they can’t spend 4+ months in a Camper van and not leave, at all. Esp with no loo!
I have a handful of friends who are now in 2nd homes - they are all isolating.

Enough4me · 22/03/2020 11:00

@joystir59 parliament may not meet as a group, but I voted on the school closure govenment petition and was told the timing in part reflected the feelings of the UK population expressed on the govenment petition site. Thus, I would encourage people to use this to express opinion.

With the current situation, it would be kind for posters to not be critical of each other's spelling, diction etc.
